PerthMike's 2019 Vegas Trip Report (4 Viewers)

Ok so I went for Ocean One. I remembered that @GIANTDustySquid recommended it. Cheers mate.

I went for the biscuits and gravy (which is a meal I feed my dog btw), just because I had to see what on earth it tasted like.

So it came out, looking much like a plate of sick, but I took the leap of faith and had a bite. My first reaction was wtf is this dried out scone and why am I eating it with salty cream. As I got into it I quite enjoyed it though. Can't say I'd order it again though.

Also got a filter coffee, with a refill for $3, so that's not too bad. When in doubt, stick to filtered.

$11.87 all up plus $2 tip, which is pretty good. Breakfast and coffee in Perth would cost me about $18usd, so I'm ahead lol

Don’t be afraid to get off the strip for good food. There are a ton of excellent restaurants in Vegas! Don’t forget Secret Pizza inside the Cosmopolitan!

I have been walking around with a dumb grin on my face. I've travelled pretty well I think, but I've never felt this excited to be somewhere. It also feels a bit surreal because I've seen so much of America on TV.

Anyone got any good coffee recommendations? I've come to realise that Australia makes the best coffee in the world and that we are now snobs. I couldn't stand it in England recently, so any good recommendation would be appreciated.

You haven't been to the PNW (namely Portland/Seattle) my friend! Can't find better coffee/beer elsewhere in the world. Well, that's a bit hyperbolic I guess...but the sheer volume of good+ coffee and beer here cannot be rivaled IMO. California is catching up I think. West coast best coast and all that!

I haven't been there personally, but Neeme is always plugging PulblicUs (http://www.publicuslv.com/) as the best coffee in Vegas.

Starbucks is over roasted crap. I don't know if they have Tim Horton's in LVNV, but McDonald's also makes a decent cup of joe.

TIL some people prefer TH and McDs to SBux!

Starbucks is okay in a pinch. Their house roast and drip coffee are often crap. Their best offerings will be their Reserve Roastery series stuff, if they have it...otherwise stick with the Blonde Espresso and an Americano (or Flat White, for our Aussie friend).

I'm excited for you! Been watching your threads for what seems like forever.....glad it's finally here! ;)

I'll be driving out Friday morning - hopefully we can get a little meet up going. And congrats on mint chips already, I wonder if its just new chip season considering the luck I had last weekend!?

Bonus points to you for trying biscuits and gravy.

Some people love the stuff, but truth be told, it's a grandmother's-secret-recipe type thing. Once you find a good one you will disdain the slop served in most restaurants (and all chain restaurants).

Now, if you ever come to the American south, we can set you up with some real gravy. Until then, you'll have better luck on the roulette wheel.

The Peppermill Lounge near Circus Circus did a great breakfast. And it’s got fire burning on top of water, which when you’re hungover is mind blowing  :ROFLMAO:

The main benefit of Ocean One is that they have drinks which are 3 for $10 which include beers or very stiff cocktails. Cheapest drinks I have found anywhere near the strip - and they are good!

Food is just mediocre.

As someone from the rural south, if you’re describing buscuits and gravy as a dried out scone and salty cream, they aren’t doing it right. Anyone’s grannie can whip up sausage gravy and a flakey soft buttery biscuit and it is heaven.

So does anyone want to recommend a proper biscuit and gravy in Vegas?

I don’t know about their biscuits and gravy, but Hash House a Go Go has it I would guess it is decent. But I always get Andy’s Sage Fried Chicken and a BLT Bloody Mary. You are good for the entire day!
