We've always assumed it was a fingernail, a card protector just never came up. I'll bring this back to my group and see if this helps us identify the culprit.

Well, we're all friends. We're pretty sure that it's unintentional.

Since posting I've alerted one of our organizers and they also hadn't thought of it being a card protector, so PCF has already helped!

I noticed the same thing when I was hosting tournaments regularly. Thought it was fingernails.

I used to save all the dinged cards to see if there was any pattern to which cards were “marked.” If it had been heavy on (say) aces or cards of a single suit, that would have been suspicious. But the distribution seemed to be random.

Now I’m betting this was the issue (chip or other card capper).

This would piss me off if my guys were doing this. It shouldn't be too much to ask to have your players make sure that they are not making marks on cards by the way they are handling them. I like playing with different card setups on different nights. For most of my setups I only have one setup for them.

Simple rule - don't leave marks on cards purposely or accidentally.

I noticed during the $300 Gladiator final table last night that one of the players said to the dealer “this one is catching the light” and I assume that’s what he meant.
But of course, final table cards are RFID and thus different from all of the other cards, so it’s hard to draw any conclusions by what we see on tv. So that’s for the firsthand info.

Update: We haven't identified the culprit, but aren't keeping that close of a watch. The host thinks it might be him, when he's had some booze in him.

Going to bump this thread. Ruined AQhh on my favorite EPT setup after only 3 hours of use, super bummer. Same markings, no malice, just a player capping and peeking.

Clearest way I could show it. It might look small but when dealing across a table it catches the light pretty easily.

Update update: The prevalence of this in our game has gone down... which indirectly implicates our host; he's more aware of the cause and probably has been taking steps to avoid it. He's also drinking less, which is probably a good thing.

The real purpose is to cap your cards so that you protect your live hand. I generally don’t care at my home game, because I can tell someone what my cards were, they can check, and pull them from the muck or seperate them from the cards someone throws into my hand.

Now if I’m at a casino - I’m already nervous enough. I’m there to win some monies, the last thing I need to worry about is them saying I made a fold action or an over aggressive new dealer grabbing my cards or some dickwad throws his cards at me. I cap my cards there. I’m loosey goosey but something about a casino just feels procedural.

If I’m playing a hand that I split - triple hold em, simultaneous hold em and super holdem, simultaneous hold em and omaha - I use card cappers. It’s way easier to lose cards in a muck during these as with a full table you have 24 potential hands on the table. Also, it helps visually. I have 3 hands all capped and only pick one up at a time. 0 way for someone to cheat this way or for someone to claim cheating.

I don't use a card capper either, never had an issue of the dealer stealing my hand or others mucking their cards onto mine. Just never saw the point.

Like you I do cap my hands in a multi hand game, just to show that I'm not mixing them up.

Yup. There is never any reason to cap your cards... Until there is.

I'm not taking the chance. Most games I play in, we rotate the shuffle. Only took one time where someone mucked my hand while I was shuffling. So never again. I always have a capper and most always I am using it.

And since I play a lot with @MrCatPants I've been well trained not to peek with the capper on my cards.
