My brother is convinced our phone microphone are on and sending everything to the advertisers. True story - last month my brother was here and we were talking about bar shuffleboard. Said I probably should get one. He flies home the following day. Sent me this the next day as it popped up on his Facebook feed.

he has a big ass trailer and was rolling immediately. Best snag on FB ever for us.
He theory isn’t a theory it’s the truth. It’s long been known that companies use both your location, the data of those around you, your microphone if allowed, as well as other methods to collect data as well as use that data to target you with ads. There was an example of a lady who was given targeted ads for kids toys because she went to a kids birthday party. She didn’t have any kids.

I don't think this is true. Would love to be fact checked. But Zuckerberg said under oath Facebook doesn't use the microphone for advertising purposes and I know Apple doesn't.

What is common is if you visit a friends house and connect to their Wi-Fi...now the browsing history of all users can now be marketed for your individual device. Ex: your brother in law is shopping for F150 trucks, you guys talk about it, then you go home and see F150 ads and think "your phone heard your conversation", when in fact, he was just browsing it himself.

Other things you mentioned @Bill_Man618 for sure...location, data of those around (just mentioned). I don't know of any app/device allowing microphone for advertising. Would love to be proven wrong.

But there was no browsing history in this case. We were chatting about craps tables and it came up.

Yeah maybe he was looking it up prior? What made him bring it up?

I wouldn’t be surprised, but again that’s a Facebook ad and Zuckerberg is under oath saying they don’t sell any speech data. No one does. Not Alexis Not Sonos. None of us consent to this. And it’s not being done, at lease with our knowledge at ad agency levels or consumer disclaimers/consent.

Can the NSA hack and openly listen, absolutely. But I think that’s it…

It’s possible I’m wrong as I’m recalling the article. I’ll look to see if I can dig it up and if I can I’ll post it. You could be right on that though.

If you're really paranoid, it's trivially easy to disable or destroy built-in mikes and speakers, and just use plug-ins when you need 'em.

I used to work for DARPA and have friends still at NSA. Those guys have a lot of fun... :cool
TSSCI DARPA TZ/CIG toy makers have fun.

Maybe we can adjust moo cash and flow it to GPI and get more NAGBs??!!

I mean, I may be retired, but I'm not disconnected  :ROFLMAO: [calls agency homie and starts a data point recce on GPI and the Tiger order]
