Someone please explain the DIBS system here in the Classifieds/m2m (3 Viewers)

Allowing dibs is an abdication of responsibility and has the potential to create unnecessary issues: sorting out who responded first, having to deal with by-passing a disreputable member who happened to be quicker than a reputable one, etc.. Post your ad, take the money from whomever you deem the buyer to be & ship the chips. And all without drama or delay.

Someone wrote earlier in this thread something to the effect that "dibs placed on behalf of another, absentee, member makes the seller delay the sale until that third party responds" (it was an observation, the person wasn't advocating this). I can't imagine the scenario where I would allow a buyer to have have any control, let alone that level, over my sale. Yet it seems to be a common method of selling for quite a few.

I don't get it :confused

thanks

im not sure I’m following. Are you saying we should be posting things for sale with a given price and when someone notes they will buy it (however it’s phrased) the sellers should/can just disregard that until someone they like comes along? again may be misunderstanding here

Obviously no buyer has any control on what a seller does just as the opposite is also true. Without certain commonly held expectations though the classifieds (or society for that matter) wouldn’t be able to function as a whole.

For me dibs should/does = the same thing as “I will buy these”. I don’t think “dibs “outside of for another member has weakened any variance of “I’ll take these”. From what I’ve seen people back out of “dibs” or any other language at about the same rate.

thanks

Just saying the seller should not be held to a potential buyer's comment in any way, and to allow a potential buyer to have that level of control is weak.

By way of example, and this is hypothetical because I prohibit dibs in my sales:

I post an ad and a member with a history of drama-filled broken and delayed sales - who somehow has managed to maintain a 100% sale rating - chimes in with "dibs". @ReallyGoodUsername posts right afterwards with some variation of "I'll take them, if still available". I will leap right over the first responding problematic member and contact you to make the sale.

In your quote replace "someone they like" with "someone they trust" (or least, "someone they have no reason to distrust") and that would be an accurate interpretation of what I meant to say.

thanks

I'll never get anything thennnnnn

5 pages of people trying to re-invent the wheel (again), always thinking there needs to be more rules to regulate what is a free marketplace.

Let people sell the way they want to and to who they want to. If you don't get something you want, life, sorry. Nobody is guaranteed anything. Feel free to do business with who you want to and not do business with who you don't.

Hello. You must be new to PCF. My name is Josh....

My favorite are the "pre-dibs" calls. On more than one occasion I've had someone say "Dibs on any of chip X you find at the chip convention. I really need it to complete my set!" Then I'll find one at the convention and buy it. Later I send said person a PM.

Me: "Hey there, look what I found! I found that chip you were looking for at the convention!"
Pre-dibser: "Sweet! How much was it?"
Me: "$4"
Pre-dibser: "Hmm, dang. Well, I've only been paying $3.50 for those."
Me: "OK, well they were asking $10. I talked them down to $4 for you."
Pre-dibser: "Ya, but I wouldn't have paid $4 for it. I'll give you $3.50."
Me: "Are you serious right now?"
Pre-dibser: "You should have asked me what my max was before you bought it."
Me: "It's all good man. I'll just keep it. I really like this one." ...throws chip in the garbage can...

Next year's convention...
Pre-dibser: "Hey, are you going to the convention this year?"
Me: "Ya, I just booked my flight"
Pre-dibser: "Cool, can you keep an eye out for me for these 17 chips? I really need them to finish some sets I'm working on."
Me: "Oh ya. For sure! I'll definitely keep an eye out for those."

If it's something I think is going to sell quickly, I will reply with: 'Sold, PM'. Meaning I'll take it, PM coming.

People have done weird shit like saving it for someone they like more, but what can you do. Until they make the site like eBay with a BIN button, just have to hope the seller isn't a tool.

If it’s a community why wouldn’t you believe that someone got a PM first and sold based on that? That’s how it worked every other similar site I’ve ever been to.

Although possible, I don’t imagine this happening often. If someone knew that a chipping friend wanted what they’re selling, more than likely they offered it privately first

As I had mentioned, this seems to happen to me enough that it is noticeable and discouraging. I was frankly surprised by the pushback on it that it actually happens. It just happened again in thread below. It’s clear some people are totally fine with this type of thing and others like me are not and we just view things differently.

That was a shit show. Added two more people without integrity to my no-deal list.

Yeah, not cool.

I prefer dibs in the thread to avoid confusion. Though I think if you say dibs on a rack, and your first, you should get dibs to buy both racks if someone else is offering to buy both.

In previous sale threads, if there is only initial interest in parts or splits, I may specifically state that it's not "first-come-first-served", but that priorities go to purchasers of larger portions of the entire lot. Stating a time limit for interested parties to post often helps.
