It's just a number that is assigned to each character in the game itself. Has no meaning other than that.

OK - now that the brackets are filled, and the Super Smash Bros. characters have all been assigned to a player, it's time for me and my son to run the matches!
All new brackets (showing each PCF player name and their SSB character) have been updated in posts #3, #4, #5 and #6.
It's gonna take us a while, so be patient. I'll try to get through 8 matches per day (I think we found out last time that there is a maximum of 15 video uploads allowed by YouTube per day). Every match will be posted in this thread when they are ready.
If anyone wants to print off the full Madness Bracket in post #95, fill it out and submit it to me via PM, I am happy to run the bracket challenge as well. It's completely random since it's CPU vs CPU matches, but it might be fun. You guys will have to determine the stakes (if any). If no one is interested, that's fine, too.
Alternatively, you could all do a bunch of side bets as your matches come up. Let's make this even more fun than it already is going to be!

Picture Ripley from Aliens meets Iron Man. One of my favorite game series of all time. If you're into video games at all, look up some Super Metroid speedruns. People have managed to break that game so much to beat each other's fastest times. It was one of my favorites as a kid, so when I saw someone could beat it in 40 minutes instead of the 4.5 hours it used to take me I was damn impressed.

You won’t play personally, no. Each player will be set to CPU control every match.
Haha yeah I know this is great. But can we set up some online play sometime soon?
