Both beautiful pieces, that IWC looks really clean! I have a speedmaster myself and I love it, although I rarely wear it enough as I can’t wear it during work. I rock my speedmaster during poker games, or a night out with friends but I always find myself banging it on something and that makes Cringe.
This will really make you cringe then. I imagine that is too deep to buff out, so I'm probably in for a big hit when I take it in for servicing.

From what I’ve heard on the watch forums replacing the Hesalite crystal isn’t that expensive. Rolex only charges $150-200 for a sapphire replacement and they are usually a rip off for everything.
I was hoping they would fix the milky ring with the sapphire sandwich for the new 2021 redo but they didn’t. The Hesalite looks much nicer IMO and it’s the original for the piece. With such a historic watch I think you need to go that direction. Though with the new movement it’s even prettier to see with a display back.

You need a cool beater then! This is actually the watch I have worn 90% of the time for the past several months being that I rarely leave the house now for work since covid. Before that was an SKX. It’s a Seiko Turtle with the rare and discontinued anthracite dial ;) It also keeps between -1.8-3.9 SPD!

Good to know thanks. I guess omega will either clean it up or replace it. I'll find out when the bill comes in lol.

I've been meaning to get it serviced for ages, but it's still my daily, so I don't want to see it go for a few months with only my cheap Frederique constant as backup.

When my new OP 36 comes in I'll get it sent off I think. I've had the speedy since 2013 and I think I love it as much now as I did then. It still excites me.

I went with the hesalite because of the history, but I really would love to see that movenent in the back. Especially with the new 3861.

There is a somewhat recent video on YouTube of a guys Speedmaster that was returned after servicing. It was quite impressive what they did. I wish Omega would bring back the Hesalite and sapphire back they had for a short time...though the history buff in me would probably still want the standard one.

Sheesh! How did ya manage that? And my speedy is long over due for a servicing. When I visited the omega dealer last summer she estimated it would be around $650 CAD when all said it done.

Wtf I get quoted double that in Australia. Stupid Australia

I banged it right on the corner of an old metal table. So upsetting

Found the video I referenced earlier...

Can’t believe I’m just finding this thread! I love watches but haven’t made a purchase in many years. In the fall my wife....out of the blue...says “I think we should buy new watches”. Hot damn! I have a short list of watches to acquire but never had a watch I felt was truly appropriate for a suit or sports coat which I wear for work (well before covid). So that’s the direction I went.

Looking to add the new Speedmaster Moonwatch this year and possibly a Rolex Explorer 1 after if the Rolex market settles down. If not a JLC Polaris or Omega Seamaster 300 coaxial.

Always lived the IWC Portugieser line but they were just too big. Then this came out in 2020! The new Portugieser 40mm. Picked it up with a nice discount through a jeweler friend. Bought a bunch of straps to try and make it more casual. The wife’s is below that.

I really like that IWC - that’s a great looking piece! I might have to put that on my list - lol.

Guy on one of the local FB buy and sell pages is selling this for $2700 Aud.

I'm really tempted lol

Nice watch but not sure I would trust any high end watch on FB market place. Too many good looking fakes out there. Good luck!

That is an impressive gash!

I have tinkered with Seiko's a fair amount. Replacing a crystal is fairly straight forward and a nice quality sapphire crystal retails for no more than $50 or so. I am no watchsmith, but I can swap out a crystal on a seiko in an hour or so. I am too inexperienced/scared to work on expensive watches but if it was mine I might give it a go

What’s the word on B&M? Seems like a reasonably priced brand, comparatively speaking. I keep coming back to this model, for my first purchase:

B&M is part of the Richemont group now which is one of the most respected in the industry. Here is a chart of all of the brands in the group.

Here is a great article on that line of watches. https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/baume-and-mercier-clifton-baumatic-new-2019-hands-on
I think it would be hard to find another in house movement of that level at a similar price point.

Thank you for that.

The whole COSC thing is a bit confusing to me though... same movement but “regulated to different degrees”. It appears the model I posted above is the non COSC version. Not sure it’s something I care about; but is it important to watch aficionados?

Generally speaking a COSC certified movement is considered a better thing, but in practice it may or may not matter. To be certified the movement has to keep time within +\- x seconds for x days. But just because your movement isn’t certified doesn’t mean it wouldn’t meet the standards. Every movement is different and it is luck of the draw as to how accurate your specific watch is.
Personally I don’t care. The watch that is on my wrist 99% of the time is a Tudor Black Bay Black. Tudor made it for a short period of time with a non certified ETA movement and then switched to a COSC certified in-house movement. I actually paid more for one of the watches with the ETA (less fancy) movement.
Like most things it’s just personal preference but I Wouldn’t give too much weight to the certification.

Similar to some other brands like Montblanc they were quasi fashions brands with outsourced ETA movements etc for the last 20+ years...so they didn’t get the most respect from the watch enthusiast crowd. Now much like Montblanc they started developing their own in house movement and have been getting a more serious look from that segment as true watchmakers. They still do a lot of outsourced stuff though.

Wow, does that thing have 120 hour power reserve? And an in-house movement?

That's pretty incredible for that price. Great looking movement too. I like the blue dial version myself.

Seems like a great option for your first nice watch though.

In terms of the cosc rating, as said above I think that's a personal preference thing. I have to think that the cosc movement is going to be more accurate, but it probably isn't going to be much.

Baume & Mercier is owned by Richemont, as is ValFleurier, their movement manufacturer. ValFleurier supplies movements to Panerai and others as well as Baume and Mercier. It's such a tangled web that is constantly changing!

Cool read

https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/how-to-build-a-watch-collection-with-1k-10k-or-100k

Edit: personally, I like the idea of collecting things that fit a theme. For me it would be tool watches. And if I had to pick three (let’s forget the Nautilus for a second)
- Patek 5167 or 5165
- Rolex 1019 (or a 116400GV)
- Rolex 5513
...and I would add that any collection should include a cool Swatch!
I like the theme idea, but I always end up thinking about variety.

I can't seem to get the 16570 out of my head, as it would be the right size for my wrist and looks great. Problem is I'm not paying current market price for such an old watch

The calatrava is another that I'd have to include. It's so simple and elegant.
Screenshot_20210227_171238.jpg

I'll have to settle for my much more reasonably priced FC homage instead.

Third might be a royal oak, as along with the Speedmaster, it's the watch that really got me excited about starting a collection.

all cool choices  Big big fan of Royal Oak!

Variety means a watch for every occasion. But then, I wouldn’t know what to narrow it down to.

Maybe...
- one dive or military watch
- one chronograph (not a Daytona)
- one perpetual calendar
...sounds very expensive too  :ROFLMAO:

Edit: I always liked this watch from AP...
