The Watch Thread (20 Viewers)

Recently got into the watch game this year. Am a big fan of chronographs with pretty movement.
Was love at first sight when I first saw this.

Recently got into the Watch game and bought a lange lol. Well played.
I have a friend that came into a very decent chunk of change, and he set aside a couple grand for a watch. Despite the best efforts of me and some other timepiece aficionado friends, he got a Grand Seiko with a quartz movement in the end.

You can pay for school but you can’t buy class; sick watch @steam!
In far less exciting news I still don't have the Oyster Perpetual that I ordered 18 weeks ago. Fuck you Rolex
I’ve heard the lists are absolutely brutal. Everyone and their mother seems to have gotten into watches during COVID, so if you ordered a steel model good luck lol will be amazing when it arrives though

Thanks @RudysNYC!
I actually did a ton of research before jumping in.
The hype is mainly on Rolex, APs and Pateks thus I realised for a newcomer to join in the watch game, there is a lot of "watch pairing" to get the pieces you actually want. I stumbled upon Lange and noticed how beautifully finished Lange's movements are with its hand engraved balance cog. The chronographs looks amazing on the caseback.

I compared a Patek 5170G chrono vs Lange's 1815 chrono and for me at least Lange wins hands down.
- Flyback chrono
- Caseback movement is 3D which adds lots of depth
- Great finishing, blue heated screws, hand engraving
- Cheaper than a Patek without having to pair the watch
- Allocation to an Odysseus waitlist (selling at 2x retail)

Anyone have a recommendation for a reasonable brand of watch winder?

My main watch up till now has been a manual wind, so I haven't needed one. But when my new one arrives i will need one.

I don't really know much about them and I'd rather not spend too much unless it's really necessary.
I like the Wolf brand for watch winders. They make several different styles and can accommodate multiple watches just in case you get more in the future.

Did any of you try and get the limited edition that Ming just released? I have never seen a more collosal f-up as that. They let the company they collaborated with run it and they not only got overloaded and shut down the first time but also the second time. Had to go to a random draw format. They are a pretty hype brand and we're releasing 200 watches and said they were surprised at the demand.

Ming Honey Edition

How much does that run for and what's making it a high demand watch (I don't keep up so really just curious)

Realized I don’t take a lot of watch pictures lol

Last couple years I’ve been wearing an Apple Watch mostly. I restricted myself to one nice watch which I got back in 2014. I decided on a Zenith El Primero. I sent it off for service a couple weeks ago so I’m just waiting for the repair and return now. Only recent pictures are what I took before sending it in.

When I’m not wearing the watch I put it in the Wolf winder case. Old picture but you get the idea. It’s a Wolf Viceroy with top storage compartment

So the company usually releases in small batch to keep demand high anyway but it this small. Even so they are typically gone within minutes. This was set to be 50 of the Honey and 150 of the black. I think it was $3600 for black and $3900 for honey but don't quote me on that. They will sell for probably $8-10k immediately on aftermarket.

Yeah I've got an OP on order with a deposit. My friend did the same but for the blue dial instead of silver, and got his 6.5 weeks ago. So that's unlucky.

And I'm on the "list" for a yacht master and have been told 3-6 months. That was 7 weeks ago. Not sure I'll ever get either lol

My personal favorite from Nomos: the Metro Datum Gangreserve. Very comfortable and looks absolutely fantastic! Got it a few years back but eventually sold it with heavy regrets. Might have to pick one up again one day.

Took a shot of it with my strat. Still miss it very much.

Spent some more chip funds on another watch for my wife's birthday. She loves Cartier.

Not a brand I ever saw myself appreciating but i'm shocked how nice this one is. Good news is that it comes with a spare leather strap, and a quick release strap system, and because it was so expensive she wants me to wear it as well. Don't mind if it do lol

In terms of accuracy and durability, there is no match for the dirt-cheap Seikos and the like.
I 've used one throughout my 18-month harsh military service and it's been great (also useable as spotlight).

As a man's only "permissible" (aesthetically) jewel (IMHO), there is no match to a plain, steel Rolex.
Although, as a watch, it just sucks.

That should be running at around +/- 2 seconds a day. Can't complain about that kind of accuracy.

Not really a watch guy as I mostly just look in this thread, but damn that looks clean.

I had it repaired (not for cheap) twice in 17 years.
Again, I 'm not protecting it from anything. My school of thought has been "from into the sea to the Presidential Palace ".
One single watch.

Cartier watches may not have the best internals but the outside just has a really nice elegance to them. I was looking at the Cartier Santos for a while but never pulled the trigger. That's a nice pickup.

I'm still waiting for my Zenith to come back from service. It's only been there since early May so maybe sometime in July. Routine cleaning of internals and updating of worn seals ran $715. It was the first time I had it service since I got the watch in 2014.

That was always my thought. My wife has a ronde and my mum has a tank, and I wasn't impressed at all.

But the santos has an in-house movement and it seems pretty good and is running accurately so far. I think I like it more than my speedy, it's shocked me how nice it looks and feels.
