Time for a cocktail! (5 Viewers)

I like that you are using Makers for a mixed drink. No need in buying the good stuff for a drink that is 67% other flavors.

I don't really like makers mark. I thought I would try this, and I'm really happy with it.

I'm still a drink it "neat" kind of guy, but it's fun too mix it up once in awhile.

Boulevardier

1 part bourbon, 1 part aperol, 1 part sweet vermouth. Stir in ice, and enjoy

Round 2, I doubled the bourbon which doubled the flavor!

Respectfully disagree.

Any cocktail where the liquor is the star of the show should use quality liquor. I think the boulevardier falls into this category.

I'm not a big fan of "base" MM either, though I've really enjoyed a couple bottles of their Private Select.

The bottle on my bar usually gets used for cocktails, and it makes a good Manhattan and a damn fine whiskey/amaretto sour or eggnog.

Like cooking with wine, better is better, but I believe a lot of the subtleties of a fine bourbon (or any other liquor) are lost when mixed with a plethora of other flavors.

Jack and Coke = fine.
Elijah Craig Barrel strength and Coke? I'll drink it if your serving it, but I'll be just as happy if you hold the Coke... and it won't make me sad inside.

Rule of thumb for me is: I’ll make mixed drinks with bourbons that are $30 or lower (Knob Creek, etc). I’ll make cocktails with better bourbons. I’ll drink pretty much any good bourbon neat.

Excuse the photo quality because I was pretty smashed at this point — but who knew that Knob Creek made for the best Old Fashioned?!

I'm thinking of trying a few new bourbon cocktails. Suggestions?

We routinely make Old Fashioneds and Kentucky mules

The Boulevardier sounds interesting? What else do you have
These aren’t all strictly bourbon, some are rye based(some obvious ones) but:

Old Pal
Brooklyn
Greenpoint
Scofflaw
Brown Derby
Whiskey smash
New York Sour
Whiskey Sour
Gold Rush

I've been on a Paper Plane kick lately. Bourbon, Lemon juice, Aperol, Amaro. Kind of like a whiskey sour with some extra complexity added from the Italian liqueurs.

You also might try it using Campari instead of Aperol. I think that might be the more traditional Boulevardier spec.

That was my intention. I couldn't find Campari anywhere. Everything I read said that Aperol was pretty close. They taste pretty good. Its a great way to use the MM.

Another bourbon cocktail on my rotation lately is an Amaretto sour with the bonus of some added bourbon ala Morgenthaler.

'The best in the world' might be hyperbole but it is damn tasty. Gets even tastier as you up the bourbon ratio. :)

Yup. That's how I make mine now. I use EJBP or Four Roses Single Barrel Barrel Proof. Fantastic! I might try Bulleit Barrel Strength now that I have it.

I love the Morganthaler version, a great recipe. Also, no idea how I forgot about the paper plane. It was my go to bourbon cocktail for a long while.

So, how did you get on? What were the results?
Haven't done it yet. Maybe Friday night. I've got the 9yr (100 proof), Single Barrel (120 proof) and 12yr (100 proof). I've got some Single Barrel Selects too, but those are for drinking neat. ;)

I’m cleaning chips and pulling on a pint of Fireball. A cocktail?...didn’t think so.
But makes the scrubbing a whole lot easier.

As a suggestion, try the bitters from bittercube in your old fashioneds. Trinity is my favorite.
Cheers,

Edit. And bada bing cherries
