Ultrasonic Chip Cleaning (27 Viewers)

Good deal but there are less expensive more powerful units out there imo.

Wow, if that's the one I just got on eBay then I paid $50 more than this... model 43440. I don't see the model on this link but it looks the same.
I received the unit today and it is the 43440, same unit. Also, for those interested in the Lundmark TSP recommended in the OP, Ace Hardware stores carry it for $3.99 a lb.

I was all set to pick up one of these ultrasonic units when I could catch a great deal, and this latest one certainly qualifies. But I've recently sold nearly all of the dirty chips I would have used it on, and have no plans to buy used chips in the future..... So why do I feel sad that I'm saving $170??

I have to tip my hat to ski_ex5. I followed his instructions to a tee and got amazing results on some pretty gunky chips. I cleaned 1500 chips in about 1.5 hours. Never again will I waste hours upon hours with a toothbrush and a magic eraser.

Awesome. I am still waiting for the eBay delivery of the ultrasonic cleaner. Wish I had known about the cabela's sale a day earlier :).

It was worth it... tested on some hot green stamped quarters and turned out safe. Saw some green on the bottom of the ultrasonic tub but chips turned out pretty darn clean in a small fraction of the time and no noticable wear other than was already inflicted before I put them in the tub.

As a side note. If you have the bcc 25c pieces which are also hot stamped they will be destroyed in this process. They look great

Great video on this process by the way. You had me cracking up on what not to do lol.

Those turned out great. I've been on the lookout for a sufficiently powered machine for sale in Canada for a while now. Might have to make a trip down the next time Cabela's has a sale.

Thanks! I feel like a kid in a candy store at cabela's...

These chips are from a casino "straight out of Compton". Out of respect for them I put on west coast gangsta rap when cleaning them. If I had a 40 in the fridge I would have poured some on the ground for my homies.

Sous vide, then infusion, then ultrasonic agitation to add surface texture, and the deep frying? Much too much work for me. I might be dead before I get to eat anything.

> I hacked the sh!t out of the salad spinner to make a handle for easy turning.

Tommy, if you have too much time on your hands and need another engineering project, it occurs to me that you could attach a battery-powered rotisserie motor to turn the cage slowly and steadily for you.

I might even have to try that myself, if I ever get all my chips unboxed...

in case anyone is waiting, the harnday ultrasonic is on sale at cabelas right now with $5 shipping. i just picked one up for just under $160 shipped. (they do add tax)

I purchased the Hornaday US cleaner at Cabellas. I had some funky gunky nexgens that I thought I would try cleaning. Water, TSP, dirty chips. What a dissapointment. Still dirty and ugly.

Ok, why didn't I have fresh clean chips?

Let's see here... Ok I have some fairly dirty Paulson Starburst... Not really bad but certainly dirty... Water, TSP, dirty chips....wow !

I have clean chips.

I think the plastic chips absorbed the sound waves and hindered the cleaning action... Clay chips clean, Plastic chips not clean.

Has anyone tested a combo of TSP with Oxy? Thinking of adding a teaspoon of Oxy for extra cleaning power on Paulsons. Will post some results of course, but wondered if anyone has tried?

I just picked up 400 Garden City 2's and 240x outpost 1's that are all dirty. Anyone want to clean these bad boys for me? If so how much would you charge? :)

I have not tried adding Oxy. The "TSP" I use is not Trisodium Phosphate, it is Sodium Metiscillate. It isn't the Lundmark brand that ski recommended, it is Red Devil (all my local place had). It does the job. Ski did recommend against the flavor of TSP that already contained Oxy. My guess is because Oxy has a tendency to fade the chips. Some people (maybe in this thread or another) mentioned pre-soaking the chips before the ultrasonic. I have not tried this method. I have had success with the process ski outlined on page 1.

definitely pre soak the garden city chips. saves getting out the exacto afterwards. the first batch i did (non presoak) didnt get all he gunk out. the rest came out much better.

Gonna have my hands full for a while with Trops, but will PM you. Not sure it's worth it paying shipping both ways?

I have been using the Lundmark TSP but had many discussions with Ski about that... He actually recommends something else but it seems I can't find it in the PMs we exchanged... It was a different brand with a slightly different formula... I guess I'll have to go through the whole thread again to find the thing...

I have a mess of white fun nites that someone decided to spray paint green. I have had some some luck soaking in Simple Green but haven't messed with them for quite a while. Wondering if anyone with one of these cleaners would be willing try seeing if cleaner removes the paint? Would be willing to send some your way and pay to ship back and give ya a stack for your troubles. That is if anyone is interested?

Thanks!

Ski actually said pre-soaking will increase the color fade problem. He would know! He takes these experiments very seriously!! I won't be pre-soaking any more.
