My attempt at soaking the chips for 10-15 minutes in detergent did wonders for the Paulson. They came off incredibly easily with a brush. I'm guessing 5 minutes and a light ultrasonic bath would get them perfect. This chip isn't even oiled.

The ASM chips became soft and the top layer became loose and burnt out.
The hot stamp disappeared because I ran my finger over it and it came off along with the top layer of clay.
Black turned grey..

Retro green just became green.

Although, I must say that the oil helped a little. But, the surface remained porous. .

I don't know what it is, but it damages ASM/CPC chips.

That is scary what happened to that DieCar. I don't know if it is said enough in here that what works for Paulson, may not work for CPC / ASM or other older chips.

With that said, what is the preferred method for cleaning these older, non-Paulson chips? I just bought an 1800 chip limit set of DieCars. The yellow solids are a bit grungy, and hot stamps have begun to wear. I'd like to clean up the chips, but not create any further wear on the stamps.

Only a toothbrush and mild soap will help here. Perhaps ultrasound with distilled water (or water without micro-air bubbles) and mild soap.

On this forum it is a crime to buy 1800 chips and not take a group photo!

Thanks! Those are seller pics. I will absolutely take group photos once I have possession of the chips.

In the meantime, maybe this photo from the seller will do? I bought 1600 of the yellow and 200 of the blue/red on the far right.

This is an 11 year old thread with 57 pages of posts. And you're saying everything we need to know is in the first post? Yeah, right... :rolleyes:
No. I’m not saying that everything you need to know is in the first post.

I only said that the fact that Burt Co./ASM/CPC chips are damaged by the Lundmark “TSP” (and others) is stated in the original post.
 
Any concerns with ultrasonic cleaning Paulson hot stamp chips? I do not want to jeopardize the starburst stamps

Same concern as hand cleaning them, just make sure you don't use a detergent/cleaner that messes with the foil. Always best to test your method with a sacrificial chip if you're not sure.
