What video games are you playing? (27 Viewers)

Never much of a gamer since high school. The last games I played were OOT and Goldeneye for N64 back in the 90s. Fast forward to Christmas 2024 and my wife decided to buy me a Switch. I was confused as I never heard of it, and once I looked it up, I was convinced it was just for children with ADHD.

Trying to make the best of it, I downloaded TOTK and was absolutely blown away by the Zonai devices and cool shit you could build. Story was kinda meh, but a hell of a game.

After beating Ganondorf and getting to around 70% (those Koroks can eat shit), I decided to play BOTW. IMO, overall gameplay was much more robust in TOTK, but the storyline was much better in BOTW. The Guardians and Divine Beasts kinda just disappeared in TOTK, replaced by the Zonai storyline.

I can nerd it up and go into much more detail, but I have no clue here who even cares about these games. Both BOTW and TOTK are quality, but I give the nod to BOTW with the better storyline, despite being released ~7 years earlier.

What an amazing game to get back into video games with.

I know TOTK is a "sequel", but playing BOTW first so much seemed innovative, between having a kid & adult friendly open space/travel game, cooking, the amount of completionist/side quest stuff, storyline and getting a modern AAA Zelda release.

It was definitely an "everyone can pick this up and fall in love with it title", probably more so than any other title/game I've ever seen personally (maybe Mario Bros. 3 beats it).

Totk was great, but playing it almost a decade after botw, the expectations of holy crap I can't wait for this to release kinda overdid it for me personally. I haven't actually played it to completion, maybe time to bring it back out.

i'm still on the same metroidvania kick - playing the last faith on switch currently. apparently it's my favorite type of game, after a good soulsborne.

Well, the enhanced graphics 60fps versions are coming with the launch of Switch 2 in June.

I thought I was buying one for the kids and one for me. But $1200 and all the issues with trying to play on 2 different switches (1 always has to be the master account, they don’t share super well).

I’ve been unimpressed with all the Mario games/spinoffs, Mario parties, etc.

Mario Odyssey and BOTW and Hades spoiled me beyond belief.

I think I’m getting the boy a steam deck instead.

Looking for some pc recommendations. Recently picked up a gaming laptop and created a Steam account after not playing any games on Xbox since my son was born 15 years ago. I picked up where I left off with my old Xbox and went straight for Portal 2 and pretty much played it straight through and loved it. Got hooked on Balatro and am enjoying that. Played through Doom 2016 and had fun for a while until I felt like it just got repetitive going from battle arena to battle arena basically having the same fight over and over again (ended up cranking down the difficulty just to get through it). Tried Anti Chamber since it was recommended because I liked Portal and was unimpressed.

Anything else I should be checking out? I only have limited windows to play so open world sprawling games that can go on forever aren’t my thing. I like strategy/puzzle games that are engaging. I also like fps as long as there’s a good story and doesn’t get repetitive like Doom 2016 (and that’s how I felt about Halo back in the day as well. I liked the Call of Duty games from 2000’s, Bioshock, Half Life 2…

Some games from the top of my head that I've enjoyed over the last few years that I think everyone must try (I get some people have different tastes, so look to see if they would be your cup of tea). These are all pretty casual, but also very deep.

FTL
Vampire Survivors
Slay the Spire
Loop Hero
Inscryption (this one is great, go into it blind)

If you want a more AAA game, the batman Arkham series was really good, only played the first two but both super fun especially if you like batman story. A little repetitive in the second one, but I was always engaged and had a great time.

The good news, is most of these games are very affordable, especially if you wait for steam sales (summer one should be coming up soon!)

One of the places I hang out for game discussion had a poll up about if you're getting the switch 2 on launch. One of the options (which I picked) was "Why? I already have a steam deck"

It plays switch games better than the switch does, if you know how.

Loved your list.

In the vein of suggesting wide range of games, Shadow of Mordor is always on my list as it has the Nemesis system, which is FANTASTIC. How rare is it that we see a brand new, game changing mechanics. F*ck Warner bros for not letting anyone else use it and also not building anything new with it.

I need to find another ATB game that FFVII originally made me fall in love with.

My favorite all time system/mechanic was the crit and upgrade aspect of Legend of Dragoon or direction based attacks of Legend of Legaia.

Best game of all time, better than FF? I know the answer is no, but my answer is YES.

I, like you, only played the first two Arkham games. Arkham City was one of the best games I ever played and was so much fun. One of the few games I completed to 100% as well.

If anyone on PC is looking for an older style FPS I'd highly recommend Ion Fury and Amid Evil. Really cool games.

ok but Chrono Trigger was the real GOAT

I never played the OG as these really aren't my style of games, but I did download the remaster that came out in 2018 on PC and it looks great. I played Sword of Vermillion for Genesis and FFX on PS2 and PC. That's about these extent of the RPG's I've played. FFX was one of the best games I've ever played.

Ong please tell me that’s the one with Wakka! Lmao love that character.

Plus then he ends up in the true goat game, Kingdom Hearts!? :ROFLMAO: Yezzir!

Nice, thanks for the recs! I've added these to my wishlist and will track sales.

Omg fricken blitzball. I’ve never sucked at a side/mini game so bad.
I hated that part of the game at the beginning, but when you finally start getting good and owning fools it got pretty fun. Plus I'm pretty sure that's how you finally got Wakka's ultimate weapon. It was a necessary evil. I remember smoking copious amounts of weed and staying up til 5am playing that stupid game back in 01.

I don’t think I ever beat the game. May be time to take another crack at it.

My big issue as a supposed “completionist” was always trying to max skills, pickup every single hidden item, etc. So side/mini games are my Achilles heel.

For FFVII it was the arcade, FFVIII card game, FFX was blitzball. They’re meant to be impossible at first and then crushing as you upgrade, but it would eat me up and I’d want to load last save.

In retrospect, I think weed would’ve helped a LOT.

I wonder if we can do like an extended meetup. First 3-4 days is LAN party/gaming/etc., next 3-4 is poker. I’m sure my wife would totally support her mid thirties husband spending a week playing video games and gambling for a week while she has the kids.

Just tell me where lol. I'd love to play some Counter-Strike or Duke Nukem. We used to do that shit way back in the day.

FFX is a lot of fun and the PC version was different than the PS2 if I remember correctly. I think the PC game was the Japanese version and you could fight the Dark Aeons which fucking destroyed me. I played during covid and those Dark Aeons wrecked me. I did not remember them from playing the PS2 game all those years ago.

I’m all the way down. Lmao duke nukem, loved that.

I’m guessing it’ll be pretty easy to have 6-8 guys out for video games, cookout, poker, etc. Like the meetup, can clear out house and sleep everyone so no one has to book a room or cars or anything.

Except this time it’s like an hour+ flight for you!

+1 for Chronic Trigger being the GOAT.

I don't go back and play many old JRPGs anymore. Once I 100% something, it's hard for me to want to go back to it. And these days, I can't even be bothered to 100% anything. Both FF7 Remake and Rebirth, I got to the 2nd to last chapter and just stopped and never finished them.

I've spent way more of my time continuing to play Slay the Spire, Astro Bot, Split Fiction, and The Bazaar. I 100% Astro Bot, but now I'm forced to help my 5yo play it.

I will be buying a Switch 2 at launch if possible because I have 2 kids and they both love Mario Kart. So Mario Kart World is a must. Plus free upgrades to BotW and TotK and the upcoming Metroid Prime 4. And next year, the new From Software Switch 2 exclusive Duskbloods.

And video/board game related, I've been playing a lot of Ark Nova on Steam.

Titanfall 2 remains my favorite FPS of all time. The campaign is short and sweet, maybe 5 hours, which fits your needs, but with a good story and lots of variety in the gameplay. It's also usually dirt cheap, just not on Steam until there's a sale, but you could easily find a cheap 3rd party key or it's like $4 on Epic Games. Highly recommended.

Free on Xbox if you have game pass!
