Windwalker’s Chipping Journey in Pr0n0grAph1C Detail (7 Viewers)

Brought my ESSTs out to do a count, and realized how pretty they are together.

My fav tourney set for sure. If I ever get to a point where I can afford them comfortably, I will get them.

In 1947, the Western Club was renamed to the Normandie Club, and through about 1979, flourished among the 6-7 card clubs that were in the city of Gardena, one of the only cities in LA county to have legal gambling. That changed in 1980 when Bell, CA started giving out licenses, and many more casinos opened there.

This is a relatively rare set of leaded TRKs from when the Normandie Club existed in Gardena.

Since the $20s are almost impossible to find, I’ve been hunting for Nero’s Den $25s to eventually mill and turn into Normandie $20s.

it is now renamed to Lucky Lady i believe, i have a sample set of these. they are awesome chips! nice find Krish!

You guys asked for it and hopefully @Windwalker is fine with me posting this in here. Today we'll be talking about the popular Normandie club that was located in Gardena, California at the location on South Vermont Avenue before moving to 1045 West Roserans Avenue from the years of 1947 up until 2016, before changing into the Lucky Lady Casino. The Normandie Club was originally opened up by Russ Miller who was a former doorman at the Embassy Club for Ernie Primm. Miller would acquire the Western Club, built in 1940 and would later turn it into the Normandie Club. Once the Normandie Club was up and running it would join the Embassy Club which was opened in 1938. Lots of you who know already will immediately think about TRK or TR King Co, the famous large and small crown chips that many places in California used and I think all early clubs in Gardena did. Business would stay steady at the Normandie through the 60s and into the 80s when they would move the club to 1045 Rosecrans Avenue. After moving locations the Normandie would introduce 7-stud and Hold'em to the casino as well as Blackjack, Pai Gow, and Super 9, which was a fast-paced game that resembled baccarat. Russ Miller and his wife Mary would leave the Normandie to their four sons just before the year 2000. At this time, it would be the oldest card club in the state of California and it would have a very special place in history. The club would be open until 2016 when Larry Flynt would purchase the property and would have liked to turn it into a Vegas-style resort. With doing so, he also changed the name to the Lucky Lady Casino which is still open today.

I have got to say, this was a very fun video to research and produce. I knew that these Gardena clubs were popular, but I never noticed how much of an impact they made on the LA county and California as a whole. Being that Gardena was at one point called the "Poker Capital of the World" means that they were doing something right! Hopefully you guys enjoy the video and learn something, let me know what you think! Thanks.

I started going to Gardena clubs in the 1950's and 60's. Played at most clubs but really liked the lunch and had met many

clients at several of the more popular card rooms. Of course never thought about taking home some souvenir chips

I find your search for these rare sets interesting. How do you go about getting leads or tracking down these sets and various denoms within? Simply word of mouth with specific PCF members, or do you know people in the Cali/Vegas community that aren’t on the forum that help out? It’s just funny because the extent of my searching would be to go to the wanted ads and throw something out there (and I’d have to first know what’s out there to know if I wanted it. Haha) Shows how much I know about the serious collecting side of things.

You would not be the first person to have CPC make some custom tri-moons to add to an old school set to fill in a missing denomination. The Jessie Beck quarters that were made were quite impressive.
The feel would be way too different for me. And I have the JB quarters. There’s a size difference, for some reason. I’m going to stick with a leaded candidate.

Do you have an alternate suggestion?
Yes. Find the genuine article. Or just use the Nero’s Den chips as is.

Even using just the $10s and $100s should be sufficient since this is obviously a small stakes set.

The Nero’s Den chips are not some random monogrammed TRK that no one really cares about. They are chips from an actual cardroom with real history, and exist in extremely limited quantities. Once vandalized, they are irreplaceable. Their history will be lost, forever.

Look, I understand the desire to have a “complete” set, but at what cost? IMO, it would be far more rewarding to take your time and hunt for the real thing, and “make do” with those gorgeous hotstamps in the meantime. Enjoy them as they are, I say.

I wrote about this in some detail a while ago in my thread, but it’s really a combination of on and off PCF resources, and a semi-obsessive desire to find more chips. I’ve been lucky to find some great deals and sets in the classifieds, been able to buy a ton from PCFers through private deals, and have found several sets while searching off-forum as well.

I wonder how relabeled (or inlay replaced) TRKs feel. I’ve never handled them, but I’ve always thought they were a bad idea. Because for me, the distinguishing characteristic of TRK small crowns is the seemless transition from clay to inlay - it’s just a uniform finish across the chip. I’m not sure how they were made that way, but they’re amazing. There’s no way an inlay replacement can ever come close to that.

You definitely have some great Normandie Casino chips !!! Can’t wait to see them all !!

Really wanted to build a limit set from these chips, but these are as many as I’ve been able to find so far. Moving the project to the far back burner.

If anyone knows of more racks of these, do let me know!
