Windwalker’s Chipping Journey in Pr0n0grAph1C Detail (11 Viewers)

Just because something is rare, that alone does not make it "special", or valuable. Take a look at the Fugly Poker Table thread - many of the specimens there are unique. I doubt there are many that would jump to their defense if they were somehow threatened to be removed from this universe.

It's about demand. If there was a money fight over every spotted Starburst chip that showed up on the forum, then we'd know about it. If someone feels enough for the sanctity of that chip that it should be preserved, then offer something in its place. Don't chastise the owner for declaring what he wants to do with his property.

No one person has the right to define whether someone is a "chipper" or not. What we do with our little pieces of clay and plastic of no historical significance is our own business, and should not be subject to moral arguments, much less outrage.

I'd like to state for the record that my post was in jest. As a Starburst fan I naturally would prefer to see them preserved and released to the market someday rather than milled, especially the particularly interesting and uncommon spotted varieties, but please view my post as it was intended: good-naturedly.

They’re already allocated for another semi-secret project :) Plus, bearclaw aren’t different enough from 4ta’s to make enough of a progression shift.
Does semi-secret mean we get to see them eventually? I just want to see a blaze bear claw. I have yet to come across that spot pattern on a blaze chip.

I do not know @Windwalker at all

but I am assuming he has been playing cards and collecting chips a long time to have that kind of collection

@Windwalker I am Jealous lol awesome Collection you have to have one of the best collections in the world I would assume aswell

I could be wrong but its one hell of a collection in my book lol

As someone who in my younger days wrote a lot (and ran juries) about graphic and industrial design—meaning the design of mass-produced products, not the design of smokestacks—I wouldn’t really expect many casino owners to have thought deeply about chips. Even though they are so central to a casino’s brand and customer experience.

... At least, not beyond wanting something vaguely cool or elegant or distinctive. While not having the faintest how to achieve those goals. (I’m sure there must be a few exceptions.)

It‘s the kind of task best delegated to a design team or consultant with deep expertise, not to the owner. The owners and managers should be smart and aware enough to recognize its importance, and to leave it to specialists.

Yet I’m constantly stunned by poor design choices in casinos (whether in lighting, seating, carpets, tables, felts, cards, signage, digital interfaces, menus, uniforms, furniture, chips, etc.). It’s bizarre, considering their startup budgets.

Braun, VW, Apple and others led the way in the past ~60 years in making big business much more aware of the power of industrial and other design practices to drive awareness and sales, and improve customer experiences... And as a society we’re much farther along today than in my youth in that regard. But even so, really really basic design mistakes still happen in all industries, I think because people at the top either overestimate their own skills, or just don’t adequately value certain areas of design.

An example from the movie biz: Having a background in typesetting, I can’t count the times I’ve facepalmed in the first five minutes of a film with a budget of $150 million+ ... After all that dough spent on stars, sets, locations, you name it, apparently someone’s nephew set the text for the opening credits in the iMovie default font. Someone who doesn’t even grasp the rudiments of typographic literacy.

So when casinos do have great chips, my guess is that a lot of the credit probably goes to the manufacturer in trying to gently guide the client toward something nicer.

As such... I’m not so surprised that my home casino has had, since its opening just a few years ago, a massive promotional sign something like 40 feet wide by 20 feet tall, taking up much of the visual space at its main entrance, featuring pictures of stacks of *dice chips* ... They didn’t even bother to use their own RHCs in the image.
Steve Wynn was a true outlier and Casino mogul

Put in my own personal way…

You proclaim yourself to be a chipper at heart @Windwalker . How can you sacrifice something as rare as spotted starbursts to complete a silly 77th set (whether you personally care about spotted starbursts or not)? Once you murder, the dead can never return. Chipping is about more than just building yet another set for yourself, is it not??

So much to unpack here.

1. I think of a "chipper" as someone active in the chipping hobby, or collectible universe, so I don't think a proclamation is necessary, I think it's pretty self evident.

2. The spotted starburst racks that *I* own are useless to me in their current form, but their lack of an inlay (and therefore their ability to be shape-milled) make them extremely useful to me (their owner) as an extension of a set that currently doesn't have high denominations.

3. I have spent a lot of time on this forum, but I haven't seen a ton of people waxing lyrical about spotted starbursts. All I know is that some people collect them, and I don't know too many of those who do well. In fact, the only person I know who likes them (because of his avatar) is you -- but given how antagonistic you've been to me over the past several months, I feel zero obligation or remorse that I might be "killing" something you love. (By the way, all one has to do is look at some of your previous posts to see that my statement about your needling is true.)

4. The other version of the chip (non starburst) that exists for my set extension purposes is the Le Cove $500. I would wager a decent amount of money that there are people who would be more upset about the murder of that chip, than the starburst I'm currently using. Some of those people are my actual friends on PCF.

I'm not exactly sure of what outcome you think could be possible here -- I happen upon a rack of purple spotted starbursts that could be used for one of my projects, which saves me from murdering a $500 chip from a well-loved fantasy set. But you think that because you live and die by Starbursts, I should automatically think of you (my constant antagonist) and say "shit, that guy's been an asshole to me all year, but fuck it, let me make sure he doesn't need these Starbursts."

I'm afraid my thinking wasn't as complex as all that -- I'm just milling some chips I own to extend another set I own. 77th set or not, I don't think it's "silly" at all.

So I actually have a serious question: Your account is only a year old. Is chipping something you've actually just gotten into? If so, what created such an interest in the hobby?

I got into chipping literally the day I created this account, just over a year ago. It was the pandemic, and I was just looking for a way to make some custom chips. One thing led to another.

It's being used to extend one of my boat sets that never sailed. It doesn't have a 1K chip, and blaze is perfect for it.

Guys. I guess I'm not a chipper anymore. Where do I turn in my stuff???

........No, I've had that exact moment happen to me six times in the last year.......

I was looking through old photographs today, and found this shoot I did which makes me tired just looking at it. I think I called it my “grail garden” photo shoot, back in December of last year. I’ve added several dozens sets since then, but don’t know if I have the adolescent energy to redo this. Phew.

Pure luck...

This thread reminds me of 41pickup's Tropicana thread where he keeps counting the number of Trop $1s he has every time he gets a new one. People are cheering him on in hopes that he completes a full rack. The only difference here is that we're counting grail sets. Only 23 more to go Krish! :ROFLMAO:

I think he made up that 77 number, I was just going with it. Hit 100 a while ago :)

If you tried to recreate this photo, you'd need military-grade table legs on that oval.

Just in case you needed a new project...

The man paid for them, it’s his choice to do whatever he wants with them. If he wants to melt them all down and make a TikTok video out of it then so be it. Same way that people can design their own sets, murder others, etc, etc.

If you don’t like what he’s doing then move along and don’t visit this thread. No reason to call him out on his decision if his actions don’t directly impact you.

Cool man glad you found something you enjoy.

I appreciate this thread by the way... it gives me something to show my wife every time she accuses me of having an addictive personality :)

I got in when I bought a craps table. And bought about 1200 nexgen plastic chips. After spending countless hours on YouTube watching @Hobbyphilic videos. Was like no way I could pay for china clays.

Now here I am still buying random chips, random barrels. Trying to figure out what I like and don’t like.

I too show my fiancé these pictures when she’s like “really another chip?”. And I’m sure we all spend as much as we can afford on chips, so we are all in the same boat, no matter your budget. Love this thread as well.

I can’t wait until the day Krish gets out of the hobby, and does a live video of him just tossing the chips into a wood chipper, just to see everyone have a melt down on here.

I love watching the best chips being put together in such awesome sets. I’m happy with my all my cheap sets and I’m happy when people put together such fabulous historical sets and custom sets.
