Windwalker’s Chipping Journey in Pr0n0grAph1C Detail (15 Viewers)

I just like how WW's got his man on the inside.

Okay, now I'm envisioning this one dude at the Goodwill, who's been approached and co-opted by a dozen different collectors. The poker chips guy, the shoes guy, the watches guy, the jewelry guy, the coins guy, the stamps guy, the toys guy, the porcelain figurines guy... All of them with an inside line to The Goodwill Dude who sees everything that comes in through the donation door...

Turns out Goodwill has had a large number of amazing finds over the years.

After over a year of hounding the manager at my local Goodwill about calling me about any chips that might come in, and several clothing donations later, I struck gold. (Price has been obscured on purpose — they do not know how to price these things.)

Hands down my favourite TRK chip set and the only one that has ever made me want to buy a set of TRKs. One of my favourite inlays of all time - reminds me of home! What a score.

Just a suggestion: auction these off here on PCF and donate the proceeds back to Goodwill.

We're about to enter some very rough times and non-profits like Goodwill could use the help.
Goodwill is a for profit company. They are NOT a non profit. Common misconception.

“I’m probably wrong here. But a lot of people are making money reselling donations is my point, and I probably shouldn’t have even said anything. What WW is doing is better than most, and hell, it landed him a grail set!”

Well, according to their main website, local organization website, and Wikipedia they claim to be a non profit. I guess they could be lying. Everything on the web is fake news I guess.

Yeah I’m probably a little off. And they do a great job for communities.

It’s just there is A LOT of people making TONS of money for Goodwill. You are better of finding local charities that don’t have so many layers of mgmt/board members getting big time money. But it’s absolutely still a good thing to donate to them. I don’t want to derail this thread and I was probably incorrect in my statement.

Any by all means. Keep donating to goodwill if you can land these chips haha!

Best article I’ve read before…

https://www.countryliving.com/shopping/a18198848/is-goodwill-a-nonprofit/

“Likewise, a 2013 Watchdog report found that the married couple in charge of Goodwill Industries of Eastern North Carolina, Dennis and Linda McLain, received close to $800,000 annually while employing workers with disabilities who were paid less than minimum wage.”

“Goodwill Omaha CEO Frank McGree was fired in 2016 after a World-Heraldinvestigation revealed that he received between $400,000 and $930,000 annually, while more than 100 workers at his stores made less than minimum wage.”

But at the same point…if you are running 5-20 Goodwill stores, helping generate a ton of good for the community, you need paid right? And it takes somewhat with a set of skills in the open job market that probably would pay $500K at a similar mgmt job.

Yeah, that's the unfortunate and sometimes greasy side of these charities. How much do you pay their executives? If you only offer less then market rate, do you have qualified folks running them?

I think there are organizations that track these things to give folks the ability to make informed decisions. Noting how much of a dollar donation goes to the actual cause of the organization (based on the organization's financial filings).

On the mail thread, you said that you only work with the information you have, like poker. So, I’ll assume the comment above is based off ignorance, not malice.

In 2021, Goodwill, a for-profit enterprise, with a very visible non-profit arm (revenues for 2021 were 5.6BN in the for-profit category, while the non-profit brought in 630 million in donations) where less than 1/8th of the profit of the enterprise goes towards their non-profit programs.

They use an archaic law from 1938 in 14 states to pay their workers less than 22 cents an hour.

They use their legal status as a charity to to win grants and subsidies, where 7/8ths of those monies are distributed into executive compensation packages.

Those dirty greedy bastards!!

That's why I always give an emphatic no at the Costco till when they ask if I want to donate to some BS money grab like Make a Wish or the Children's Hospital. They're all the same!

I'm heading out the door to burn down their local operations. Thank you for the heads up Batman! Can I be Robin? Alfred? Or Batgirl?

OK, I retract my suggestion. Put these in your vault! Thankfully they were saved from the greedy clutches of Goodwill.

Yeah, fuck Goodwill they’re a bunch of greedy fuckers who like you said line thier pockets and then turn around and ask for money. At the end of the day it’s difficult to judge you for finding a good deal at goodwill and paying the asked price I see nothing wrong with that regardless of income level. You put in the work to build the relationship with the worker and you deserve to reap the reward of that. Just like you did a few years ago with the old dude from Delaware who designed all those boat chips you have. Nothing wrong with that in my eyes…except the fact that you scored that big and didn’t share pictures:ROFL: :ROFLMAO:

All kidding aside, that's really shitty to hear about Goodwill. You want to assume these folks/organizations are honest and doing things right. But it sounds like the people at the top are milking things for their own benefit. I guess we shouldn't be surprised? Sad.

The Garden City brass metal inlay set. In search of the elusive $20 or $25 to make the set playable, which it barely is now, given the single rack of $20s, in worse condition than the rest of the set.

I thought I’d hate these based on the first photo, but the close up shots of the inlay completely changed my mind. Very cool chips.
