Windwalker’s Chipping Journey in Pr0n0grAph1C Detail (16 Viewers)

Unhappy with the $25, so have been playing with options.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I hope it was a good one.

Was playing around, and this fellow just kinda popped out. He’s definitely not up to code, but he’s pretty. :)

The $25 and the $500 have been hard on this set, and I’m beginning to see why some of the better designed sets tend to use so many primary colors as offsets; you start to run out of shades quickly in some lanes, and the visual differences between certain colors are negligible.

It’s been a fascinating process, digging into the color palette.

I’ve also started the process of creating a workflow in Photoshop, and recording actions against the process, so that I can automate some of the color changes. I have a long way to go to loading up all the spot patterns, but, it’s starting to come together.

So... How's it looking with that Capitol City set, Krish? That set sounds so insane, I cant wait to see pictures. Is it currently in the mail?

Yep, was shipped from Wimbledon in the UK this week. Haven’t gotten much mail from the UK lately, so don’t know about timing — but hopefully, gets here soon. I would say mid next week?

@JeepologyOffroad suggested I look at a chocolate $20 for the lineup. He wasn’t wrong!!
Ahhhh... much better. :)

Black Hundos Matter. :D

Interesting spot color choice. I think they work? They don't strike me as a great choice, though. No idea why. Maybe if they were in triples like the $5 instead of pairs like the $1. When I look at the $1 the colors don't seem out of whack, because the light blue spot blends with the darker blue chip. And when I look at the $5 none of them seem out of whack, because even though none of them blend, the two contrasting colors are nicely sandwiched together.

I don't have any design theory to back me up here, just relaying my subjective impressions.

Made a bunch of $5s today. It’s amazing what just a slight switch in palette does to the mood of a chip. Side effect of all this mocking up is that I’m starting to understand which colors in the Paulson palette are the most versatile. Plus, my automated Photoshop actions are starting to get more nuanced and complex.

Absolutely loving this learning process.

Also of note is how very different the last chip is to the rest. Radial symmetry has some appeal over 3 colors.

One final learning for tonight. Palettes are so pivotal in creating a sense of refinement. While loud, bright colors are generally amazing, there is also some joy in subtlety and restraint. I present to you, the “refined gentleperson’s California set.” :-)
