WSOP drama (2 Viewers)

I just came across this. I don't know anything about solvers, but why don't they just ban cellphones and electronic devices? Seems simple to me.

Seems simple, but people are addicted to their phones these days. If you say no phones while sitting at the table you may have mooks getting up and walking a foot or two away from the table. I don't like the idea of players having to police what other players are doing on their phones during the game, weird situation. Looking forward to seeing this develop, I think its been building as a problem.

Personally I love the idea of no phones for the casual aspects. I think many casual/bucket-list players that head to the WSOP are the ones excited to play and looking around and socialize at the table while many grinders/misregs are the ones scrolling Twitter with headphones on lol. Obviously I'm biased because I play baby stakes but I make sure to keep tourists happy and talk to them whenever you see a new player. At best you pick up a tell or they softplay you, at worst you waste some breath, oh well.

If we’re taking a poll, I don’t care what people look at between hands. If it makes you feel better to see what a solver says about the hand you just played, go for it. If you’re short and you need to review a chart to see which cards to jam, good luck to you.
Personally I rarely look at my phone when I’m at a poker table. But I guess if you’re at the table all day every day, I can see it.

Sorry, but screw the people. I'm all for no phones. People are too damn distracted and I don't want to be held up because some douchbag is twittering. My solution would be that everyone is issued one of those weird bags you get at some concerts, which are great btw, your phone and other electronics go in there and they unlock them at the end of the day or if you exit.

Clearly the solution is to play cash. Memorizing ICM range charts is not what enjoy about poker. If I have open an app to know that K3 sooted is a jam from the cutoff with 22 big blinds and then act accordingly I hope someone smacks me across the face.

Sorry, I was just trying to say that tournament players are nerds.
Only the nerdy ones. I’ve looked at a push-fold chart exactly once in my life (and that was at 2 AM in a hotel room after bagging 10 big blinds. Shrug.)
Anyway, the WSOP seems to be gaining traction, so they might be on to something with this tournament stuff.

I get it! I'll be there Thursday to join in the fun. What I observe (and disdain) is the mechanical approach to the game necessitated by the gradual solving of the game. Black jack is boring to me because you just follow the chart. Playing black jack optimally (without counting) is a sort of achievement, but more a memorization achievement than one of deduction.

What I love about poker is the ability to deduce and leverage countless inputs to make decisions with incomplete information. When all that goes away and get replaced with a bunch of jam/fold charts, it makes me sad. But I'm not saying the charts are wrong or that people are bad for using them. Just that it makes me not want to play that game.

Tournaments will always be popular for many reasons, not the least of which is the potential for a big score. Pros will go wherever they can get the best EV. I'd rather pros be in the tournaments than the cash games anyways. They can hoodie up with beats earphones and fold away while double checking their jam fold charts and dreaming about ICM chops.

Idk the solution but I’m surprised it’s not been dealt with before now. It’s not like these are brand new 2024 inventions.

But phones in general/home games - I don’t get it. It’s like being on a phone at the movies or party. I swear every game that I’m going to take photos, I’ll post to current stacks thread, etc. And almost all games I’m having too much fun and I completely whiff and forget to photo much if anything at all.

Well said, I actually agree with almost all of this, if not all of it.

I usually forget as well, and when I do remember it's just to post a couple photos of my dwindling stack, after I've already folded ;)

Just reading through on x and it doesn't sound like he was breaking any WSOP rules (when called out anyway)...

He was obviously defensive and what he said indicated he didn't know he wasn't breaking the rules, so he must've felt like it was unethical at least, but by the word of the rules he was fine. Thread title key word of "Drama" was spot on.

The belief that he had any expectation of privacy in something he was doing in public is laughable.
Yeah but it still isn’t cool, is it? He’s got no legal expectation of privacy, but I don’t think it’s very decent to photograph somebody and their phone screen and then to post it all over the internet, especially if it’s to make cheating accusations that you can’t even back up. I don’t blame the guy for being annoyed. They could have blurred out his face. Feels like an attack.

This was my thought, exactly, and I would have loved to have been at that table when he said that! I'd have told him he obviously isn't smart enough to read a GTO chart!

I can't disagree that maybe he shouldn't have put it on Twitter, maybe he should have showed it to the floor, but there is no expectation of privacy when you are in public.

Participants may utilize the Bravo Poker Live registration app, WSOP.com, or Caesars Mobile Sports App while involved in a hand as use of these applications does not give an unfair advantage to the participant.

This is a stupid exception in the rule book that opens up loopholes. Just ban all phone usage when in a hand! Exception when you’re filming your all in moment because you have no further decision I can understand, but allowing certain apps and website usage while in a hand just means the responsibility to enforce the phone rule falls on the players. Dealers can’t see what’s on everyone’s phone screen and TD is usually busy with multiple tables.

1. If everyone had to get up to be on their phone it would be a shit show of people standing constantly.
2. Too many people need to take work calls and texts and play poker. Being able to be on your phone has to help field size. If you had to give up your phone as some suggesting field sizes would shrink dramatically
3. Too many people listen to music and use their phone such
4. When I was there recently the Wynn did police the phones couldn’t be on the table or on the railing. In your lap or pockets. Not sure how much that helps…

Out of sight out of mind is a thing. So in your lap/hands/pockets will help.

But yah the entire GTO chart problem sucks and is hard to police.

1 - Agreed
2 - I get and understand this. I'd still be in favor of less people so it was more like poker and less like bingo (this is also coming from somebody who has never played in the WSoP, for what that's worth)
3 - Right, these people are annoying
4 - This is good, but an unwinnable battle.

I feel it is common courtesy to refrain from phone use while in a hand, as soon as you fold anything is fair game :-).
It also has to do with paying attention to the game you are involved in, the distraction factor of phones is just horrid.

Do I guess there's a market for an App that looks like your wife is yelling at you for something, but it's actually a solver?
"Why didn't you take out the TRASH before you LEFT?" means that you should 3bet to put pressure on weaker hands in the blinds ahead of you.

Looking for angel investors now.
