Just going to throw this out there to maybe spark some discussion.

Pull quote of the piece for me:

"One is lucky to find an imperial stout that merely contains vanilla or coffee, rather than maple, breakfast cereal, or sleeves of Oreos. The prevailing trends continue to foster a beer culture built around saccharine, cloying beers full of sugar, with bombastic flavors seemingly designed to appeal primarily to drinkers who detest the very idea of subtlety."

Interesting read. Perhaps it is my beer bubble, but I feel like I'm seeing more and more styles even at the local beer bars and on restaurant menus. Nothing WAY off the beaten path, but when I can sit down and order something like a very specific helles or a spontaneously fermented beer along side my burger, I feel like at least on the connoisseur level things are keeping up with diversification.

My favorite quote:

"I have never seen any group of people so happy to pound cans of Busch Light as groups of professional brewers after a big beer festival. To these beer geeks, there’s a time and a place for everything."

In my experience, this is very true. It's a full-circle thing. Sometimes you need to drink a PBR or a Banquet.

On your original quote: I really quite enjoy a cleanly executed porter - sometimes it is hard to find a dark beer that isn't a sugar bomb. However, when it happens, it is a lovely thing.

A local brewery announced a new ESB yesterday. Seemed like a good enough reason to drive 30-45minutes each way in questionable weather. This one is growing on me.

Damn, but I do love ambers and ESBs.
