Cash vs Tournaments preference? (5 Viewers)

i like both, but.... If our weekly tournaments (League Play) wasn't for something bigger (League Championships) I would be board to play a tournament every week.
Definitely agree the fixed cost of a tournament fills the seats and then some of those players get hooked into the cash games.

If we didn't have the fame & fortune of our league champions AND i could get a large enough crew to fill 1-2 cash tables I would be all over cash only.

Tournaments are great for recruiting players in general. The fixed buy-in amount lets people know their potential loss for the night up front. They can provide hours of fun hanging out for that set price. They are cost effective way to learn basic poker concepts as well. If you manage to win one the payout is usually decent enough.

I don’t know of many people that got into poker without playing tournaments first.

Unless they are over about 50 years of age. Most of the people my age learned to play in nickel/dime/quarter cash games, using real change. Later we graduated to plastic Hoyle interlocking chips!

I prefer cash. But I like a tournament every now and then. My biggest issue with tournaments isn't the strategy or difference in play. It's that I can't just stop when I want.

Don't get me wrong. I can sit at a poker table for a long time, but knowing in a tournament that I can't just stop if I feel I need to without torching value bugs me.

I think it might be tricky to cash in and out. Plus in reality I think a lot of times you would be sitting there at the table by yourself waiting for someone else, let alone 3 or 4 more.
Plus as far as I know they don't have SOHE or Scrotum.

Cash. No need to worry about blinds getting bigger and stacks getting shorter. I can also vary my style of play on a hand by hand basis because I don’t have to worry about a coin flip situation ending my night.

The one aspect of tournaments that’s nice is that you know exactly how much you’re going to lose in a night.

But cash is so popular! You’d always have somebody to play. Run it like the tourneys, PayPal your buyin to the TD when you sit down, they send you back your cashout when you get up.

From what I understand is the game is still “raked” in play money so the counts would never be accurate.

Far prefer cash. I only really enjoy a tourney if there are three or more tables. Poker was invented as a cash game and to me that will always be real poker.
My old poker crew hosted very well structured 30-40 person tournaments 7-8 times a year for several years. Four spots payed with first usually around $2400.

I remember those days of fat turn-outs and few pay-outs! I played in a monthly tournament that drew a crowd of 50 to 60 players before Hollywood Slots opened their poker room. 45 to 54 players paid out top 6, 55+ paid out top 7.

Cash mixed games, but only when everyone is happy with the stakes.

I grew up playing cash, but stopped because once we got out of college I could never find 6 guys that wanted to play remotely the same stakes.

When one player brings $20 and another brings $300 and wants to get all of it on the table, it just does not work. NLHE Tournaments are what got me back into poker and it was all about limiting the proverbial $300 guy.

I’ve since met a couple of guys who can play $0.05/$0.10 or $2/$5 and treat the game just as seriously either way, and I respect them a lot for it.

Sure it does. The P* Home Games section has cash tables that can be created (play money and some real cash tables, if you live in allowed areas). They are both raked, too.

I like both but prefer (well structured) tournaments for the « competition » aspect.

Tournaments are a nice intro (less expensive) to poker for newbies too.

So I like both but I think I’m more in the tournament camp

I'm not a very experienced player, and right now I'm trying both tournaments and cash games. I'm not doing that well in the former and doing a bit better in the latter (so far), but I'm still trying to hone my basic skills.

At the end of the day, I'm a better blackjack and roulette dealer than I am a poker player.

I voted tournament. Tournaments fits my style of play better and mindset better. I play poker for the social aspect and the competition, it isn't about the money. I would prefer to win a tournament making a profit of $20 then finish 4th with a profit of $100. Also I prefer to say I finished 1st at the end of the night instead of I played well and took $500 from my friends. I very seldom play in a casino, when I do I normally play tournaments with a couple of friends.

Id say over 40 or really Gen X and older. My original poker crew were all people who learned on cash games as you describe and the oldest guys are now mid 40’s. The poker boom In my area was more responsible for getting people to play holdem over stud and straight poker over dealer choice type of games. Most Tourney only players I’ve met are Millennials.

it’s been a while but we may have payed a 5th spot over 30 people. But never more than that. We wanted the prize money to be something substantial

I find cash to be way better for socializing. Especially with lower stakes games. The entire table stays together for hours and new people can show up anytime. As a mater of fact, the social aspect is the root of my weaknesses. I drink and converse too much in our lower stakes cash games. I do much less of that in tourneys.

When I used to host home games it was always tournaments because most of the folks I played with were on budgets so having a fixed amount they could afford to lose made the games fun and without any drama, issues, robberies, etc.

But my preference when I go somewhere to play (home game or casino/poker room) is cash because I feel it's more profitable long-term for me

I prefer cash over tournament in general: fixed blinds, more control on chip stacks, personal break options, and less commitment on playing time or table.
For social games at home, I love low stakes cash .25/.50 because it’s more inclusive. If anyone busts out of a tournament, they are out for good. My home games are mainly friends that play poker, I wouldn’t want a game dictating when my friend goes home.

^^This. When you invite friends, they book their evening to come to your house.
It's not nice or doesnt't make much sense to have someone get permission by the higher echelon (ie the wife) only to be told to f*ck off the table and just drink alone after two hours of play.
If there is a cash game afterwards, why not right from the start?
