Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (74 Viewers)

Sent me down the rabbit hole back 5 pages.

I’m sorry, but you simply can’t convince me that most of the most active posters on this site are either objectively morons, obtuse, or trolling (that includes me!).

I get it, sports fanatics want to argue LeBron and Jordan. Chippers want to argue minutiae. But y’all refuse to give people their flowers.

The fact that Tigers got so much hate is just absolutely moronic.

Take the Tiger chips, and 9 other chip sets - customs, boat chips, nagbs, etc. Show all 10 to random non chippers. Laymen, designers, whoever. I guarantee that the tigers will regularly be rated towards the top.

Yes, they’re bright and shiny. No that may not be your thing. Yes, they are objectively aesthetically pleasing.

All the other bs about “if I had GPI access” and “anyone can do it” - Gtfoh. There are some baller custom sets. There are some really poor, poor sets aesthetically speaking. I’m curious as to why everyone isn’t producing only A+ home runs like Moonlight Cardhouse.

Ffs, we can all be chip nerds, while still agreeing that yes the Tigers are objectively pretty and obviously built with an eye for design.

Boat chips made people unhappy, there was some division, was there a private piece to the forum to run that? There were obvious group buys with not pretty inlays meant to be resold. There were some not so great ways folks went in getting in orders through. There was seemingly some issue with every nagb.

But just so I’m clear - the argument against tigers is that they’re…..too pretty? Made with a designs eye in mind and people liked them? They cost too much (but not as much as other nagbs despite being wildly more popular meanwhile Ken was, what I understand to be, the only one who profited - and he isn’t in need of profit financially but probably needed *something* in return for his time and effort)?

I don’t fucking know. I’m the first person to line up to argue about anything, it’s fun. But at least have something tangible or credible to stand on other than “I don’t like the chips” if you’re gonna hate on them.

(This post brought to you by someone who is cheap and only owns sets bought at cost, yet bought tigers because of their aesthetic. I didn’t even love setup of every Tiger sale, but go figure they weren’t created and sold just for me specifically)

(Second edit. I’m not stanning for Jeep or Ken. I just like the chips. If Jeep doesn’t bring back the damn hot stamp tigers, I’m not letting him in the meetup)

And one more thing. It’s not all subjectivity - there’s also room for real world practicality. I know these chips you’ve pictured would be a HUGE hit at a meetup of chippers. But if I felted this set at my game with my regs, I would hear a ration of shit about it from more than half the table. Partly because we are all assholes up here, but also because to them, dollars are white and fives are red and twenty-fives are green, so let’s just play some goddamned poker. They’re still annoyed that I use $20s instead of $25s, and do you know what I’ve eventually learned? They’re right. My favorite chip in the world annoys them. But they prefer $25s, because that’s what they’re used to and they just want to play poker and they couldn’t give a crap about fancy chips, so how can you argue with that? Considering they’re more than half my table and I enjoy their company, I’d be a fool to.

This isn’t the argument. Because I agree with everything you said. AND when a NAGB is pulled off and I don’t really think of them as customs and I believe they’re done with knowledge that many will intend to modify them.

It’s surprising that so many tigers have been unscathed this long. That’s credit to Jeeps amazing work. But that surprise shows that we expect these types of chips to be murdered.

It also sounds like there’s some offshoots that were more personal, not purchased at quantities to sell, designed more customized. That’s a custom set to me.

But a “custom set” (which is I think where this started and I think I kinda started it but I’m not going to go check) is not a set made for mass appeal to set builders who will murder them. To me that makes these and all other NAGB chips not customs

Lots of people hate vineyards. Giant inlays, RHC, Slippery, don’t drink wine, whatever. You don’t like? That's fine. Sell them to me for cheaper than what I’m already been paying. I’ll buy them all. (But no seriously I have too many. Stop selling them to me)
Lol meanwhile Vineyards are a top 5 set for me along with Tiger hotstamps being top 10  :ROFLMAO:

I hear ya fully. I meant more like non poker, i.e. show my wife a bunch of diff sets and she’d grumble under her breath about fucking chip nerds and fake bourgeoisie and then be like idc, those are cute/pretty.

But you are 100% right. I subjectively believe that they are objectively pretty high up there. I believe that if you showed a couple hundred chip sets to a couple thousand people who had never played poker, Johns sets would regularly score really damn high, tigers included.

These arguments and discussions are fun to have. I enjoy reading and mulling these over. It’s the bashing for no reason and lack of all critical thought or supporting ideas behind the bashing that gets me. Upndown is a great example of someone never happy to let things lie, but he provides substantial reasoning and sense. I love that, lol that’s the way to my heart

I mean, the thread crapping alone in an actual vendor thread was considerable to say the least.

I suspect they aren't being murdered is because the prices, original buy and second market, are just a bit too high to justify that process for more than a few chips.

Oh shit, would you look at the clock? It’s prob time for the mods to ban me again for an “investigation” or something random.

Time for me to find my way back to my own thread :x

I actually agree and feel like the chips were very well received. The amount of messages I received from people was crazy. And it wasnt even people that ended up asking or trying to get chips either. Just a simple message and that was it. Very surreal experience to be frank. I truly appreciated it. There were a select few absolute assholes towards me afterwards that I never had issue with before. Which is fine. I get it, but majority was not that way. And I would never expect everyone to “get it” with the design either. I think there are many customs that are trash, but they just don’t get torn apart because they are customs that someone spent their time and money on. And the owner loves em so that’s what matters in the end.

That said, the most recent NAGB that happens will always garner the most attention and receive the most hate at the time being for a variety of reasons. The tigers were also unveiled very differently than everything before it which also opened it up for more criticism rather than a simple FLZ and move on.

I learned a lot about people (and myself) throughout the process and I have a hunch that Tigers will live in infamy. Not for the designs or any of that bs, but for other reasons I won’t get into now. Time will tell. I just hope it’s not the last to go thru before clay goes out the door entirely.
That might be a step too far. They're objectively impressive. Pleasing though? In my opinion, a lot of them are garish (including all three that you've pictured, no offense.) I'm not shitting on the set. I've seen some tigers that blow me away and some that I don't like and really I haven't kept a scorecard.
Yeah, they probably get a fair share of hate just due to jealousy or old feelings. But I think overall they're pretty well received. They've kind of been front page news here for over a year. So that's plenty of time to hear oposing opinions, even if they're in the minority.

So, too much hate? I dunno - there's huge room for subjectivity here. Which means "I don't like the chips" is actually a perfectly good reason. If you don't like that one, I could say "green dollars are dumb." Again no offense, but that's my honest opinion (and I'm probably not alone.)
You can't please everybody, but these tigers have pleased a damn lot of people. So don't dwell on the minority who don't love them.
Agreed with all of that. Hell as time passes there are some chips I don’t like much anymore. I don’t even own every single chip that was made. Plus I made plenty of blunders I wish I could change now. The timeline, constraints, and amount of chips designed in that timeline - along with working hard to make an inlay that everyone didn’t immediately want to kill was a tall order.

And green dollars are out there. As a Cali guy I love em but totally get they are wild. Since that set was kind of a gamble on actually receiving it at all and just for me and ken, I wanted to do something wild that no one would ever waste their “one time” NAGB on doing. So the design was purposely done a bit garish.
set made for mass appeal to set builders who will murder them
Still not how these were designed.
these and all other NAGB chips not customs
Agreed with this though.

Legit wasn’t planning on it lol…

This is my crew. When I unveiled the Tigers, I was expecting some “ooooohs” and “aaaaahs,” but all I got was them making fun of them!! Those damn things are by far the most I’ve ever dropped on chips, and I was not expecting such a cold reception, especially since I was (and still am) so enthralled by them.

But, to keep this in perspective, these are the same guys that ALWAYS choose a plastic set when I allow them to pick. I love plastic, but I have some fairly decent clays that don’t give a second sniff to. Long live the Tigers!

I feel this.

My last game I ran my $2 limit set. Was so pumped to finally felt them…. The amount of bitching was next level. But hey at least I didn’t buy 3000 of them or anything stupid like that….

Love my Tigers and people really enjoy them. I am really impressed how all the best Paulson colours are used in a single aet without any dirty stack issues.

Chip shufflers are annoying. It's like sitting at a table with a bunch of ADHD kids fucking with fidget spinners, or people who just tap their fingers all the time for no reason.
I don’t mind chip shuffling…

But keep shaking your leg and I’ll start debating the criminal charges….

Chip trickers that fumble chips and delay action are worse!

I’ll never forget the day in a MTT that I got moved to a table in a seat next to this guy who couldn’t shuffle chips. But here’s what he did instead. You know how when you want to hear what chips sound like, you’ll grab like half a barrel and drop them down kind of slowly on top of each other? He was doing that, except instead of slowly trickling them down, he would quickly slam them down on top of each other, creating a really loud obnoxious disrupting noise.

Not surprisingly, this chip slammer also had an awkward sense of humor and an unorthodox style of play. And I had to sit next to that for over an hour. I was honestly surprised no dealer ever said something to him about the loud chip slamming.
But anyway, if you think shuffling is annoying, imagine that.

Now that is controversial.

It's wrong mind, but definitely controversial.

Except that it isn’t wrong.

There’s been talk of Tina chips going into the hall of fame, which would be pure bullshit.

If everything is special, then nothing is special. Which describes Tina customs to a T(see what I did there? Lmao)

It’s great that people can have nice looking customs for cheap, but there should absolutely be something special and unique about the HOF.

Tina chips are neither

I disagree. When somebody comes up with a unique design for ceramics, I’ll applaud them. The problem I have with Tina chips is that most of the time, they’re just copies of existing clay chips, which I think is crap, and the small percent of the time people do actually make customs, they’re still copying clay styles onto a ceramic, which I think misses the mark.
So while I’ll agree that most Tina chips I’ve seen do not belong in the hall of fame, I wouldn’t reduce the entire medium to participation trophy status - they have potential.

It's about the design. I have seen some really nice Tina/ceramic sets, and some lackluster CPC sets. Just being made of some particular medium doesn't make a less than awe inspiring set special, for me at least.

I’ve seen some nice Tina sets too, but still don’t think they should go into the HOF. Unless there’s a new, different, SECONDARY category for them

Your take has me curious. Do you feel this way about all ceramics, or just Tina’s in general? If just Tina’s, why is that?
