Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (14 Viewers)

If you have a regular game with same people you don’t need denomination on them

… And anyone who can’t figure out the value of undenominated chips just by watching a few hands likewise probably shouldn’t play poker at all.*

Say you join a new private 1/3 game. You buy in for the max, $500.

The host gives you:

20 blue chips
41 brown chips
7 mustard chips
1 orange chip

All undenominated.

You could, you know, deduce their values from what you bought in for vs. the breakdown of what you received.

But you refuse to do a little (simple, common sense) work to figure it out, and are too embarrassed to ask.

So the game begins.

The small blind puts out two blue chips and the big blind puts out one brown chip.

WHOA WHOA WHOA WHAT COULD THAT POSSIBLY MEAN?

WE BETTER WATCH A LITTLE MORE OF THE ACTION BEFORE IRRESPONSIBLY GUESSING THAT THE BLUES ARE $1s AND THE BROWNS ARE $5s

UTG says “raise to 20” and tosses out one mustard chip. The dealer gives him back one brown chip.

OH GOSH MAYBE THE MUSTARD CHIP IS WORTH $25 AND THE BROWN IS A $5… BUT ***WHAT IF **** THE MUSTARD IS WORTH $7,547 AND THE BROWN = $7,527???

Now the lowjack says “make it 70,” and throws in one orange chip. The dealer gives him back one mustard chip and one brown chip.

SOOO CONFUSING OMG WHAT COULD THE ORANGE CHIP BE WORTH THIS IS REALLY HAARRD

The hijack says “call” and puts out three mustard chips and gets back one brown chip.

OH MAN WHAT IS GOING ON, WE BETTER FOLD OUR POCKET ACES ON THE BUTTON BECAUSE WE ARE STILL NOT SURE WHICH CHIPS TO USE EVEN THOUGH THE OTHER PLAYERS HAVE JUST SHOWN ANYONE PAYING ATTENTION WHAT EACH COLOR DENOTES

CASH ME OUT I’M GONNA FIND A GAME WITH CHIPS THAT ARE ALL OFF WHITE BUT HAVE DENOMS WRITTEN ON THEM

………
* Unless you are colorblind in a way which specifically prevents you from distinguishing them based on colors and/or spot patterns. Then you do have a gripe.

Limited edition chips shouldn’t have large numbers on them that aren’t the denomination. I’m super colorblind so saying “only the X denom have special editions” doesn’t help that much.

I know there isn’t a $75 denom chip but when it’s tossed in while you’re in an intense hand it can tweak the brain. Same with Mohegan’s dang 20th anniversary $5s

There's a lot of wasted white space on that giant inlay. And you're right about the 75.

Or minimally the denom should be larger than commemorative number

Anyone who within one orbit can’t retain a memory of the value of chips based on their colors probably shouldn’t play higher than .01/.02
I have a player that has been with us for 14 years. Fourteen. Every time the non-denoms come out, she asks what each denomination is, despite the fact that we use "standard" colors on almost every set - and multiple times during the night.

She's a laugh riot, and a slightly below-average (but improving) player. She is more than welcome in our $30-$50 tournaments and our 25c/50c cash games.

Years ago (2005) I got my first set of customs made. Someone on HomePokerTourney.com (now defunct) gave the advice that you don't need denoms on chips, because you may want to play different stakes later. It was the worst advice I had ever received since I've been chipping. However, dictating what stakes someone you never met should be playing would be a close second.

I love it when somebody botches their attempt at reason, and actually disproves their own argument.

At a 1/3 game, when the small blind posts two blue chips (50c each obv) and the big blind posts a single brown chip ($3 obv). Anything else is nonsense.

Sorry, I just hosted 2/5 for eight hours, still stuck in my brane

Point stands though: If you can’t identify the value of chips just be LOOKING AT HOW EVERYONE ELSE IS USING THEM ESPECIALLY FOR THE BLINDS AND OPENING BETS, you should quit poker

By the same virtue, cards don't need indices either. We should just use the old style cards. If you can't identify the rank of cards just by looking at how everyone else is playing them, you should quit poker.

“Queens?”

“Did you just assume my card’s gender?!!”

Simple solution that can work - large sign that you can point to that shows the chip color and/or actual chip with matching denom.
Did this for new players or those that couldn't remember many many years ago when I only had blank solid ASM HHRs.

example
CHIP VALUES
White = $1
Red = $5
Green = $25
Black = $100

But the best solution (and the correct solution for a chipping forum;)) is to have a set with the actual value on the chips.

Don’t you want players who can’t even remember what the denom is??? That just means you have a juicy game.

I wonder if a good lawyer could make the casino honor that as a $75 chip.
