Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (75 Viewers)

I think the specific seller is the honest seller and the seller who says "look at the pictures" is selling trash
Feels like a crapshoot.

“Look at the pictures” can be someone who doesn’t know what to use, I.e. the chips are darn near mint, but how do you say that without trying to reference mint and they’re trying to be fair.

Or it’s someone who aligned the chips to hide any potential flaws, took a close up photo(s), and then touched up the photo in addition.

And back to my point. If you’re a vendor on here selling for profit you should take returns. Conditions are difficult to agree upon.

Maybe if it’s the scale of TCR, 15% restocking fee.

I agree with this also

Interesting. These things are tough to agree on but not too complex. Don’t know why I’m posting this because probably irrelevant but I’ve always liked this from r/penswap

  • [A1] - Mint (Uninked). Shows no signs of use.
  • [A2] - Same as A1 but may have been dipped or inked.
  • [N] - New or New old stock, un-inked but may show minor drawer wear.
  • - Excellent. All parts original and showing only very slight signs of use. Very slight surface scratching; very minor discoloration or brassing; crisp imprints; no significant dings.
[*][C] - Fine. All parts original. Some discoloration and brassing; light or worn imprints; small dings to metal or scratching on plastic.
[*][D] - Fair. Some parts possibly not original; significant brassing or discoloration; very worn imprints; dings, scratches, and cracks that do not impair a pen's function (Please note any cracks specifically in the post). May be a good writing pen or usable for parts
[*][Parts] - Parts or only good for parts

Yes - I’ve seen this more than once.

Pics are more important than the written description IMO.

Good, and sufficient pics to accurately depict the condition- including edges, faces, and warping (or not).

Then I have no issue with “look at pics and judge for yourself”. As long as the pics are accurately representative.

How the eff do you people have more than one hobby.

Some of the difficulty here compared to other collectibles is also that it’s a collections of items. Yes you can go through each of the chips and give them a rating but idk, does it really matter?

Maybe this is the controversial opinion but I’ve come to care less and less about quality. I don’t want extreme bike tires but A) worn chips are usually much more satisfying to shuffle and handle and B) like, I’ve got almost 50 year old TRKs that saw play. I don’t give a shit that there’s some wear. They’re real things and they get played. Sometimes before they come to us and certainly when they’re with us. Some flea bites? W/e

Different for singles collectors but also I don’t care about almost any singles collected to just stick in a safe place so that motivation also doesn’t interest me.

I don’t. I do? I get super deep into something, try to learn a huge amount, find my presences, and then find a graceful exit. Months of researching and trying pens I found my favorite pen and wrapped up shop on that “hobby.”

Poker chips have had much more sticking power for me but I know exactly what my end point is and how I’ll be getting there after buying and selling thousands of chips the last couple of years and finding what I want.

The people on here who really do….

Also, blurry line between “hobby” and “spending addiction” lol.

on the contrary my dear, I am trying to make happend "custom set" from Matsui for a friend. He wants two highest denomination chips to e slightly bigger. So ok, 39/40mm for 5,25,100, 500 and 43 mm for 1k and 5k. Turns out he wants 41 mm and 43 mm is a deal breaker for him. People are wild...

Ummm…wut.

So, you can speed run me then right? Holy shit this is a gold mine. I could have a pen guy, a PC guy, a shoe guy.

Alright, I’m ready. Hit me with it. Give me your favorite pen that you discovered and that was enough for you to quit the pen hobby. I don’t know what to expect, but if it’s under $150 I’m getting it!

Shoes I can’t really help you. My Hokas are A+ but I am not a shoe person.

Pen recs:

The top pen I settled on is these beautiful bolt action pens: https://modernfuel.com/products/the-bolt-action

Honorable mention to this guy but it’s not my go to rec because A) usually OOS and B) they’re a tad fragile:

I know there’s a pen thread, I’ll post some pr0n shots and tag y’all or whatever if I have any egregiously boring meetings tomorrow (I will)

Selling your custom set for anywhere near what “They cost from the manufacturer” if effing insane.
Agreeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
As soon as your artwork is on a chip, it diminishes the value by 50%.
Agree
As long as we are on it, relabeling a chip is a very poor substitute for the real thing.
Not sure what you mean here completely? If you’re relabeling, doesn’t that usually mean that presumably there isn’t a real thing?

Taking someone else’s custom chip and removing the inlay to put yours on there is lame. Just buy a custom set.

Likewise if the real casino chip is too expensive or whatever, putting that label on a different chip is also lame. I’ve tried it and I really wanted to like it, but I can’t.

Depends on the set. I'd buy some of the GOAT sets at retail.

Though many people think their own set is the GOAT, but it's probably not.

Historically, I was in the THC or bust camp. However, being exposed to, and getting some other molds has really broadened my appreciation beyond THC’s.

The old school H-Mold is one of the more underrated molds IMHO.
It really grew on me. It's what my first custom set was made on and will be what the next custom order (that I got a quote on today) will be made on. Feels good and looks classic to me.

Not always. Singles, yes. Large sets, eh.

With chips and sets coming and going, sometimes untouched after receipt, it’s likely sellers don’t know the condition of every chip. And asking them to evaluate every chip to a defined standard isn’t going to happen either.

I know you weren’t targeting me, but here’s an example: I had 1800 chip limit set of casino used B&Gs. I didn’t know the condition of every chip when I bought them or sold them. But having played with most of them, I knew the B&Gs were in great condition, but I was in no position to attest to them all. I pulled random chips for the images and was willing to take more or answer any questions. (One photo of a rack showed an ugly chip, and I kept it in the photo- but replaced the chip.) Even when I went looking to replace the least minty chips, it turns out I missed a couple (fewer than the extras I provided, so buyer was ok).

Nothing nefarious, wasn’t trying to hide ugly chips. I just didn’t know, and didn’t feel comfortable making a statement based on impartial information.

I will say, we’ve seen examples here of where the received product is miles apart from the photos- there’s no excuse for that. There’s no excuse for fraud either, by using good chips to hide the ugly ones. In both those cases, I agree that seller needs to make it right.

It’s really simple: If you have concerns, buy using PPG&S and pay the fee as a hedge. If the chips are bad- there are options to address the issue via PayPal if the seller won’t make it right. But choosing PPFF, you agree to take on the risk.

[Edit: fixed typo]

Your own custom set should be your GOAT set. If you end up selling it you messed up. Unfortunately I did this twice but sold them at a reasonable price because I'm a realist.

I don't understand it when people try to sell custom CPCs close to their original price. I guess there might be that one whale that comes along and buys them, or maybe the the theme can work with someone else on a personal level, but the probability is so low... They just sit there or "go back on the shelf" and get reposted later.

Picking up a custom set at 50% for a relabel project is OK if you're on a budget. Great way to recycle chips that'll never get used too. But ya, space between the recessed area of a murdered chip and the new label tilt me. If you have disposable income, get customs.
