Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (25 Viewers)

Controversial thought of the day (not a new one): Everyone here is insane. Don't think so, try telling a normal human how much you spent on your most expensive set. Study their face carefully. What the incredulity wash across their face. See the confusion in their eyes as they try to do quick mental math and connect that to the idea of small plastic (oh please don't even try to explain "clay" to them) circles. Oh they might seem impressed but you should know they are thinking of all the ways they can avoid involving you in anything that involves responsibility, certainly of a financial nature.
Chips show up at work. Rack of live Bellagio $5's. Explain to coworker that they're live and worth $500. Oh, and I paid $625 for the rack. Get asked how many chips you have. Obviously they have a number like 800 in their head and watch their eyes bulge when you answer 16,000. They reply SIX TEEN THOU SAND ? LOL. Bliss

Every time a listing like the Mapes set shows up I have to show everyone.

You do not show your wife a set that cost you over 10k let alone 1k:

My wife and I get such a kick out of looking at some of these threads mentioning wives reactions to chips showing up with the post man not to mention the serious amount of cash you all lay out on these chips. It is even more amazing how many chips and sets some of you all have! that windwalker guy must have some serious games to get all those chips in to play! So is it a rotation of sets when you host games?
She couldnt help but see that all of these paulsons called nagb are still in unused condition after many years! Is it common to compile sets of chips and never use them for years and years then list them for sale? I can only surmise that the sets are bought to make money down the line? I assume this would be considered controversial chip questions and in the right forum section.

Perspective from a noob. whatever variation of a design was made and paid for should not simply be used without the permission of the creator.
My first set of chips will be Tina chips.
You are aware that these two sentences are mutually exclusive, right? Whatever you order from Tina can, and will be used again without your permission.

I am off to toil at work for the day, but love the convos. I dont know about that because after someone directed me to alibaba and asked tina how much it was to order some Pioneer chips on that cap dash mold she said I had to order through Daniel on that mold and that the picture I showed her belonged to someone who would have to approve to use it. these,

Correct. You need to go to pokerchipper.com and join a group buy to get the CapDash mold chips. Danny, the site owner has rights to that mold.

Ooooo... something I want to chime in on as the local IP villain!

Harry Potter GIF

Lets list my crimes... I'm sure there are more, but here's a start!:
  • Tangiers Mold/Inlays - Copyright violation (name, sword logo)
  • Mr Burns' Casino - Copyright violation (name)
  • Mr Burns' Casino - Trademark violation (character images)
  • Hard Rock Casino Overlabeled Chips - Trademark and Copyright Violation (name, logo)
  • Hard Rock Casino Overlabeled Chips - Copyright violation (background art from Prince, Rolling Stones Albums)
  • Dunes of Arrakis - Copyright violation (likely) on Arrakis name and Spice must flow
  • Teenage Mutant Poker Turtles - Trademark and Copyright Violation (character images, logo/name likely derivative enough)
  • Nuka Casino - Likely fine/derivative works, but use Pip Boy imagery in dealer button and plaques.. copyright violation!
  • Harrahs NO $25 overlabels (dead casino/chips) - Copyright and trademark violation (name, logo)
  • ...
  • Dollar Bill plaques - surprisingly no IP violation, follows the US federal printing regulations
But.. is it all wrong? Maybe.

Am I hurting casinos? No, or not enough for them to care (turn a blind eye). None of my sets are direct recreations of live casino chips, nor compromise their security.

Am I hurting the show/movie runners? No, or not enough for them to care (turn a blind eye).. not competing with product offerings they have, nor selling at larger retail scale.

Am I hurting chip collectors/resellers? Nothing is being made at volume or that will ever be sold in my lifetime (lets hope for another 50+ years) as something other than customized (e.g. Hard Rock), if sold at all.

I think we all draw a personal line in the sea of grey as to where we determine we shouldn't pass... which is fine and I'm more than OK with others being more conservative than I am, or even looser in their own definitions. I drive 5-10 miles over the speed limit in some areas, and try not to just use "legal" as my reference point for "ok". I draw my line as to where I think I may hurt others/individuals directly per above.. and have tried to approach from that lens.

But hey, agree to disagree on things.. and in the end I'll just shutup and enjoy my chips if needed. ha

My only issue with you is the amount of ideas and fantastic execution on Tina chips.

I wish they were brpro or matsui or CPC or thc relabel, mostly the last two.

Dang, I feel like you’d be really helpful for planning out meetup theme, chips, gear, addons, etc………..

I have 3 leaded THC sets right now (one mint, one EX, one heavy used).

If I had to keep only one set between them and my Proteges I would keep my Proteges.

They shuffle so damn well in their own unique way (Cigar and Snifter). The mold, inlay, and theme are just elegant and cohesive. I just love them.

And it’s not that leaded THC don’t shuffle amazing but each set has its own issue that keeps it from being perfect. PCAs are too mint and the RHC $1 is slightly triggering. Mixed EX set has some slight stack height issues and not a consistent theme. Used set is too varying in condition across the denoms.

And the Proteges have their own issues (inconsistent inlays) but that for some reason doesn’t bother me.

Am I crazy? Or did someone already have this take in this 4000 page thread?

Me on the very first page, thank you!

Chip/rack stackers. Really? To me these have always seemed like the most unnecessary item of all time not to mention they can't be great for the environment.

It's really not that hard to take barrels out of a rack and stack them is it?

I think what @TheRealTeddyKGB really means is that he secretly wants a chip stacker, but it should be 2ft tall for his stacks:

Get on it @Tommy

I’ll never do group photos of my chips without a Rack Stacker again. They’re game changers.

You couldn’t be more wrong. They’re an absolute game changer in preparing for a family shoot.
