Not to make this some boring discursion into performance art (although that's obviously what I'm doing), but my problem with that particular type stuff from Dan and others is that it pulls over itself this insincere "slacker" facade. He could easily do everything he's doing there without the morass of wires and "vintage" keyboard and effects boxes. But he wants to appear as if he's a broke artist just doing what he can with what little he's been able to gather when in reality the whole thing is curated and orchestrated within an inch of its life in order to appear random.

In the world of the hipster, the worst thing he can do is try too hard or actually put effort into his art. He has to appear that he's merely giving the audience a glimpse into his weird reality.

However, check out the below clips of the Residents to see the progenitors of the type of experimental art-pop Dan tries so hard to capture. They are still playing and are still among the best music performance artists on the planet. And notice that they make no bones about how hard they have worked to present their art. They're not afraid to show that they have practiced for countless hours and spent countless dollars in order to give life to their work.

Does it sound weird and not to everyone's taste? Absolutely. But it's not a joke because you can see the sincerity with which they're willing to put real work in to get to where they are.

I think that video of Dan Deacon is from the 80s. That "Vintage" keyboard - was cutting edge. The wires - well, commercial shit simply wasn't readily available.

Now if he continues to do his performances in the same style, that's just sad, though I suspect anyone still entertained by this "music" is still longing for the rocking days of .mdi files.

I doubt it's from the 80s since Deacon was born in 1981.

EDIT: Yeah looks like the video is from 2006.

*snip a bunch of awesome hyperrealism stuff*

Your last post of this stuff got me back into it and I've decided I would really like to see some of this stuff in real life, I'm blown away with it. The old lady under the blanket has eyes that haunt, the stubble on the mans face blows me away, and the skin wrinkling where the guy has his hands on his wife's (? whatever) arm is unreal.

The paintings and graphite drawings are insane as well...
