Sad story about that drain (well a very similar one)...

As our city grew, the need for a new fire station became a reality. The contractor did a marvelous job on the outside - unless you count the roof, but that's another story. I'll stick to the drains here.

We opened the station. The previous shift was the first to open it up, and signed off on all things OK. B-shift is a dirty bunch of guys. We know because we washed the trucks in the bay the next morning, and when we completed the job we found the day-room (our living space) flooded. We ran the hose and watched the water run away from the drains, down the hall and pool in the day room.

When taking a shower, we found the same thing. Run the shower, water runs away from the drain, down the hall, and into the day room. The day room has no drain.

When the contractor came back, he dropped a level on the top of the drain. The ends of the level sat a good 1/2 inch above the floor, suspended in the air by the drain which had concrete sloping from the drain, with the drain itself as the high point. Showers were the same.

The contractor then pulled out the paperwork. "All drains must be level". The work was completed - as written.

The next 2 weeks were spent as a new contractor used concrete saws, chopping out the floors and replacing them - while we kept the station operating.
