Afternoon chaps.

As this is the only forum I really frequent, I thought I'd ask if any of you fine chaps (and ladies) cycle? One of my closest friends is a keen cyclist and has been going on at me to have a go for years now. He left the UK around 6 years ago to live in Fuerteventura. I recently went to visit him and agreed to give it a go.

I loved it!

So much so that I've just bought a new bike and all the gear to go with it with every intention to carrying on over here now that I'm back.

I'm just wondering, does anyone else have a road bike?

I cycle frequently. Trihonda does as well (or used to). I think there are many others floating around that cycle quite a bit. Quite a ways from you though!

I bought a road bike last year (actually bought three and sold one, bike flipping FTW). Used it a decent amount last year, but to be honest. I haven't ridden yet this year. I keep meaning to, and I could certainly use the exercise, but I've been busy/lazy. At this point my main concern is whether or not the frame can support my "upgraded" weight from when I was riding last year

I've been a mountain biker for 30 years, and was a police bike patrol officer and instructor at the beach. (Great duty.)

Recently i have been riding up to 25 miles on long-ride days, but I stop at a coffee shop at about 10 miles.

Lately, I have joined a couple of friends who ride regularly on the Schuylkill River Trail outside of Philly.

I have an (old) Trek that looks and rides like brand new after 20 + years. Great fun.

My son has two bikes. He is big into fitness and shit. He goes on on 2-3 rides a week that range from 30-50 miles. I forget what his average speed is but I remember being impressed when he told me.

Nice. My bike has the Ultegra group set, too.

I bought the Giant TCR Advanced 1 and think I've already spent the same on accessories already...

Ya, I've done my fair share of biking. The last road bike I sold had 30k + miles on it. :).

I've done almost every aspect of cycling. Mtn Biking, triathlon, road, winter racing (downhill), and like @dennis63 i teach a week long Montain bike school a couple times per year.

One only has to look at my custom table and chips to see how deep my obsession runs. :)

It's cool to see oher cyclists on the forum. Especially neat to run into folks like Dennis, who's life passions so closely match mine.

I'm tempted to cycle to work, which would soon clock up the miles. I did around 180 miles in the week away, which for my very first time on a bike wasn't too bad. My commute to my current client is a 40 mile round trip.

I love the amount of technology that's available, too. I'm a stat geek, so using apps like Strava really hooks me. Unfortunately, I have an addictive personality so when I get into something I have to dive head first into it and have everything related to it.

My bike arrives tomorrow and cannot wait to get it setup and get out on it. Just hope this weather improves as it's dreadful at the moment.

What bikes do you all have at the moment? Is there anything I MUST have whilst starting out?

An older Trek 1500 aluminum and a new Cannondale Synapse here for the road, plus a Cannondale Adventure hybrid for back and forth to the tennis courts. My wife has a Specialized Sirrus, and just sold her Fuji Monterey. Mostly Shimano 105 sets and one Ultegra. My favorite bikes ever were a Specialized Sequoia touring bike, and an older Colnago.

Founding and life member of the Princeton NJ Free Wheelers. Rode for many years with the Potomac Pedalers in DC. Now ride with the Sarasota Manatee (FL) Bicycle Club, and occasionally the aptly-named Lakewood Ranch Village Idiots, a mostly racing group.

Used to ride centuries and several shorter hilly rides every week in NJ -- pretty much had to have a triple, with a 13 to 24 low. Now the right knee limits even my biking. This old age is a bitch.

My younger brother used to do more challenging rides out of Atlanta, like the Assault on Mount Mitchell, Six Gaps, Bridge-to-Bridge, the Hotter-than-Hell 100 (TX), etc., and run events for the BANG club. He just drove the old Mount Mitchell and Bridge-to-Bridge routes last week, and couldn't believe he used to ride them regularly.

"Bridge to Bridge starts as the first rays of light are on the horizon in Lenoir North Carolina. 1,000 competitors are poised to head out when the gun sounds. The riders take both lanes of the road, and it is pure havoc when there is an oncoming car. Shoulder to shoulder, it is not uncommon to be forced off the road and into the weeds to avoid a car. After ten miles the pack is thinned and all the riders are in one lane. Around mile 60 there is a long steady 12 mile climb up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Parkway is up and down until you approach the Aqueduct, a very serious set of switchbacks that take your breath and your legs away. You exit the Parkway and head toward the entrance to Grandfather Mountain, elevation 5,200 feet. At the entrance to the park you have completed 100 miles with 9,300 feet of climbing. But, the ride is not over, you have two more miles to bike. Two miles and 1,000 feet of climbing. That is an average grade of 9%. The winners will finish in less than 5 hours, mortals finish before dusk. 102 miles, 10,300 feet of climbing."

Mount Mitchell is like driving the Pikes Peak Hillclimb: you're likely to go from 90 degree heat to sleet and hail -- and lightning -- during the climb.

Ride them all now, while you can, guys.

LOL, found an old pic of me riding my old race/training bike (the one with 30k miles). On the plus side, I sold it w/o the HED wheels, for $1k (felt I got a decent price for a bike w/ 30k miles on it).

Tri-bike.jpg

I believe this was during an actual race

The red line was mount/dismount zone (<-- me pushing boundaries).

Here are a few more pics of bikes in my stable. I have added a couple more bikes of note, but I don't have any pics. The most expensive/fastest bike shown is my Trek E11. The Cane Creek wheelset is insane. I've had offers to buy it close to $2k. I probably should sell off some of my herd (as I am not in a position to race tri's competitively anymore). These pics are a few years old for sure...

1996 Trek OCLV 5200 w/ infamous "nude" carbon paint. (retailed $2800). Sporting Ultegra, the nice CC wheels. The wheelset likely retailed for around $2000 new (but these wheels were ahead of their time, super strong/stiff, super light, and super cool). I've seen newer (lesser quality) similar Zipp wheelsets retail for $2500-3000.

Bikes are my life. Not really into road riding though. I have a motorbike for that :p

But mountain biking, yeah! Used to race downhill, now have started racing enduro and occasionally cross country (although I don't have a cross country bike - just the trail/enduro and a freeride bike now). This thread makes me happy :)

Is there anything I MUST have whilst starting out?

Strava! :ROFLMAO:

The responsible bicycle educator in me requires that I must advise wearing a helmet... :)

@bentax1978 I love that Orbea! Ever since they came out, I've thought their designs looked out of this world. Never ridden one, but I've heard good things...

For my MTB friends... I'm very excited about June 10th.. Trek has invited me to their world headquarters (30 min drive from me) to test out and provide design feedback on some of their new work bikes (and test ride some of their newer race MTB's) on their secret off-road test trails. I've heard about these trails (reserved for their staff and pro's that come in to test out new bikes...

One of my former students set this all up with Trek... I was told that we'll get a full tour and an assortment of goodies (hat, shirt, water bottles, etc..). I told my former student buddy to screw that stuff, just give me their employee pricing on a new MTB!!!! Ha!!!

In all seriousness, I'm pretty stoked at the opportunity to ride the secret trails.

Oh mate, be sure to report back with an update on that, @Trihonda ! Sounds very fun to me!!! I'd love a Trek Remedy.

Enjoy (y)

I'm going to hook up a helmet mounted action cam... Hopefully they're not TOO secretive about the trails, lol...

Kind of odd to see those bars with the front fender and rear rack, no? :)

Those are JUST bar ends, with brake lever extenders. It was used as a commuter, and often times a winter racer (for winter multisport events) because it was built like a tank.

I also like to ride. 2014 and 2015 were big years for me. I completed RAMROD and climbs of Mt. Lemmon and Mt. Haleakala. 3 other centuries as well as 5 rides of 7500ft of elevation gain and 50+ miles between March and June. Life ran aground and I have only a handful of short rides so far this year.

I ride a Sepcialized Roubaix w/ Ultegra setup.
I also tri and mtn bike. I seem to collect bikes like I do chips...with a Cervelo P3 and Ibis Ripley in the stable.

This is my only picture of my road bike on the morning of RAMROD last summer.

At the top of Haleakala, the longest continuous road climb in the world. 0ft (beach) to 10,000ft (volcano) over 37miles with only 300 yards of flat or downhill on the entire route.

Wearing eye protection is a must as well. I'm always surprised how many locals don't...

Absolutely... But helmet use (or lack thereof) astounds me. I see it all the time, at work, and in my own neighborhood... I see parents riding around with their kids (kids wearing helmets, parents, not). I've actually said something to these parents, and the parent's response "oh, they'll wear a helmet, I'll make them"... Oh really? Like, why would they? You're showing them that helmet use isn't important (leading by example), and the second they get to choose on their own, that fancy helmet will be protecting their handlebars, lol...

But ya, anyone not riding with eye protection is just looking to get a huge nasty stinging bug in their eye... (or debris, or a branch, etc..)

Haha oh yeah, I have those too. I have a Garmin 1000 and some Oakley Jawbreakers on the way. All the gear, no idea...

Basically I think I'm set. I have: helmet and glasses, jerseys and bib shorts. Shoes, cleats and pedals. Two water bottles, tools and a puncture repair kit. Garmin and phone for when I lose myself in the hills.

Unfortunately the drivers over here, coupled with the narrow roads make road cycling a little nerve wracking, but I'm looking forward to my first ride since being back, which all being well will be this Sunday.

Prepare for the Strava updates!

Here's the bikes in my stable.
