Guns you own (3 Viewers)

Straight out of Tacoma! Great company with great products.

No, I don’t work there...but I have tried.

I have a thing for WA AR companies, but Aero is by far my favorite. I am trying to get a lower/build from them all. Love having the “——-, Washington” or whatever roll mark it is. Same with Arizona, the Ruger Mark IV and it’s beautiful “Prescott, Arizona” mark had me at hello. :D ;)

Somebody give me a good introductory revolver to try/buy at the local range. Then I'll work my way up to a mag.

For sure! Open to anyone joining the shoot. For the sporting clays we would split into teams of four.

I may have to borrow a gun from one of ya as I am pretty sure I only have single shots left.

I think Fran and Boother will both be in as well. I wonder if Andy shoots.... Could get scary lol.

Anyone else interested in a Clay Day in May?

Sporting clays down the road from my place followed by dinner and poker?

Not sure how I missed this tag! But definitely in, have plenty of shotguns to loan as well.

Ok, all of you gun experts, I would really appreciate your help.

I’m getting a shotgun for home defense. Down to two choices ... a Mossberg 590A1 and a Benelli Nova with a mag extender that a friend has offered to sell me. I’ve held both but only shot the Benelli, which I liked, although the recoil was a bit rough. I also tried the Remington 870 but preferred these two over that.

Not a ton of differences that I see. The Mossberg has a ghost ring sight and the Benelli is a simple bead. The placement of the safety and slide release is different.

I’m a relative novice if you think that matters to my selection. I will get some practice in but not a ton.

Feel free to PM me if you prefer. Thanks!

Both are great. A couple you tube vids might help cover the features of each.

My home defense weapon is not a shotgun, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think I would prefer the tang safety in a home defense situation rather than having it on the trigger guard. Just my two cents

Mossberg does some silly things with guns... Chainsaw grip, etc. But I've always thought of your basic home defense shotgun as a flip between a Mossy 500 and a Remmy 870 (Remmy's controls won out for me). I think Benelli is a step up, but Ive never shot one. Everything else being equal, I'd buy the Benelli and not think twice about it

BTW, you'll never need sights for home defense, lol.

Edit: hickok45 for the win!

In the hickok45 beneli video, he had three feed issues by the 18 minute mark. No, thanks, especially if you are planning this for home defense and aren’t going to practice with it much.

I am not a fan of the safety on mossbergs but If you must choose between beneli and the mossberg then I’d go with the mossberg.

Too bad you didn’t have a good experience with the Remington 870. That’s the gold standard for work-a-day pump shotguns. This one is great: https://www.remington.com/shotguns/tactical/model-870-express-tactical

The shotgun, with an 8 shot (bird shot) load is a great choice for home defense, especially from a penetration standpoint. Almost every other round (even a .22) will cut through multiple layers of drywall presenting a hazard to your loved ones in other rooms or neighbors. There’s a good video on this out there somewhere.

Also, I feel compelled to suggest that you get more than some practice in whatever platform you eventually purchase. If you’re wanting to use this in an actual critical situation then you want to know where everything is on the weapon and how it all works like the back of your hand. In a home invasion situation, it is likely that your stress level will be off the charts and your body will be hyped up on adrenaline. Your fine motor skills will suffer so that isn’t the time to be trying to remind yourself how stuff works. Get some proficiency with it, and then go regularly to keep that proficiency. It’s inconvenient, so most people don’t do it, but it’s essential.

Sorry for the soapbox there, just trying to encourage a good purchase and course of action. :)

Thanks so much for the input. I actually haven’t seen an 870 like that one and am going to check it out.

I agree with you in terms of practicing ... just not a lot of places around here where I can shoot a pump action shotgun.

A friend of mine suggested a semi-auto Benelli and I know that’s what they’re known for. I’m going to check that out as well.

I have a Remington 11-87 semiauto that came from Washington State Patrol. I modified it a bit with pistol grip, shell holder, single point sling and MOST IMPORTANTLY a flashlight.

It is my favorite for home protection. Loaded with buck and ball combo shells.

I have an 870 with extended tube and an 18" barrel. I upgraded the safety to the large size. You don't need sights within 20 feet with a 12 gauge

I’m wondering what made you pick a shotgun for HD? Have you considered other weapons?

I considered a handgun, but I don’t trust my aim with one in a high-stress, high-Adrenalin situation. Would much rather rely on my big muscles than my small ones.

For years I was a pistol and shotgun sports guy. In 2008 I decided I better get some of the scary looking guns I’ve wanted and got into ARs. Now that the market is so soft I’ve been buying more rifles and lowers to build off of. Currently working collecting parts for a 18” precision build in the spirit of a modern MK12.
Here is my last build...my home defense rifle. 11.5” all Colt upper and bolt carrier group with a Colt FBI contract overrun barrel. It’s currently on a MARS full ambi lower from LMT built as a pistol (LMT Defender in this pic). It’s got a Geissele SSA E trigger and an Arisaka light and mount. Rail is a Mid West industries Combat rail. As soon as I decide on a suppressor it will be ordered. Was going to SBR the Colt lower but afraid to now that they stopped making them. If the start up I’ll do it. Aimpoint PRO red dot

I would HIGHLY recommend an AR. Do some research on ballistics and penetration of different projectiles. You are legally accountable for for every bullet. Buck shot and almost all pistols rounds will penetrate multiple layers of drywall and could easily leave the house. Most 5.56 and .223 loads from an AR will only get through one possible two walls and most of their bullets will immediately start to break apart.

If you are concerned with stress the AR is the most ergonomic and softest shooting weapon available. It really is the ultimate tool for the job. For all these reasons and others almost all police have retired their shotguns for ARs. Do some research (not on a poker chip site ;)) and you will see many experts who will advise this...atleast the ones under 60 years old

The only down side is the noise. They are VERY loud. I keep electronic ear protection on top of my safe. Hence why I’m looking for a suppressor which will tame it a bit. Still not hearing safe but won’t blow your ear drums out. BTW, all guns are loud and louder when fired inside. The AR is just the loudest.
