I had no idea there were so many Neandertals on board. Winchester 94, circa early 1930's, and still shoots like a champ.
Extremely rare, I think there were less than 7 million ever made ;)

So I'm working on my second AR a 'build' project this time. Trying to keep it economical.

I started out with a Anderson lower complete with a Colt style pistol grip and a mil-spec trigger (both of which will probably be changed out sooner or later). This upper is available in both carbine length and pistol length gas tubes... can anyone explain the difference and how this applies to my build? I honestly don't know which one to buy.

I'd also like to discuss the merits of the side charging handle... I like the idea of less parts to buy and I think they look cool when they cycle (fuck that non-reciprocating bullshit lol) but I've heard those Bear Creek uppers are a little on the heavy side as a result. I don't mind a little extra weight since I'm only putting flip up sights on it for now. Any other drawbacks?

I built a side charger and could never get it to run right. I think the BCG was out of spec against the upper, but everything should have worked. I retired from dealing with them after that nightmare.

Wait till a holiday and grab a MBT trigger from LaRue. Best value for a two stage IMO.

My theory is always keep it simple. Things break. I like to have spare parts. I like easy to source spare parts.

well, they just use a different gas tube. Use an adjustable block and you shouldn't have any issues. I've made a 10 inch to a 22 inch, all ran the same as long as you don't use a crap gas block and take the time to tune it.

Apparently I missed that question. It's a preference. I'd go carbine, but it can tilt people having the block that far out... Both should work fine and neither really have an advantage IMO

Standardly the longer the system, the more the force to cycle the gun. But both should operate the gun just fine...

Did you already buy this stuff above or are you asking about it? I would highly advise staying With a traditional AR design (no side charging handle). There is no practical advantage to it and I’ve only ever seen the concept on AR type bolt action type hybrids.

As for gas tube length, I don’t know why a pistol length gas tube is even an option for a 10.5”. Pistol length gas system is something you usually hear about on 8-9” 300BLK out. Carbine length gas system is the standard for 10.5” -16” 5.56/.223.barrels. I say 16” but it originally was for the 14.5” as it was designed with the M4 platform. 16” is the civilian size to comply with NFA rules.
Now that extra 1.5” creates additional pressure and therefore higher bolt velocity. So about 10 years or more a go a slightly longer mid length size was introduced to soften the recoil impulse of the 16” and add to reliability and longevity. Ironically it has also been shown to do the same for 14.5” so SOCOM is using that gas length for the new URGI program.
After that you have the longest which is rifle length and was the original length when the platform was designed as a 20” rifle. This length is also common for 18” barrels following the MK12 design the military used.

You don’t want to go below 10.5”. That length was found by the military to be the absolute shortest you could go and still get an AR platform rifle to function reliably. However, 11.5” is a lot better and the military is moving to that for their short barreled rifles as they replace the MK18 with the URGI system. Also the FBI HRT teams are using 11.5”. Better reliability and ballistics with just one inch extra.
Watch this guy and listen to him. He is current Air Force TACP which is their SOCOM unit. His channel may be the best gun channel on YouTube

I am not a building expert and have only replaced the plastic parts of my AR. However, taking internally moving parts and making them external probably adds risk of malfunction. But if you’re doing it as a fun experiment I don’t see the harm. I do love the AK platform too and they can scratch your external charging Handel itch.

I took your advice and grabbed this 11.5" one for about $70 more. I'll post a picture when it arrives!
 
I've wanted to own a handgun for going on probably 10-15 years now but never got around to buying one for one reason or another.

Got that remedied now:

Glock 44 for training/plinking and Glock 19 Gen 3 for otherwise.

Will probably replace the G19 with a Gen 5 someday but I took the first G19 my FFL could get ahold of for now.

Next gun purchase plans include a shotgun for HD and an AR15 stripped lower (hope to get that ASAP before the election).

Did you just look in my safe and pick from what you liked? Except I have duplicates of everything except only one G44.

Get rail mounted flashlights on the G19 and shotty if they might be your home defense choices. :tup:

Haha! No but I guess you have good taste! ;)

Streamlight TLR-7A is already in the mail (along with some new ameriglo sights and extended mag and slide stop releases).
 
For you experienced AR-15 guys: would you recommend a certain lower parts kit or does it really matter as long as it is built to mil-spec? Or would you recommend buying stuff piecemeal? I am very uneducated on AR builds so far, but from what I understand it's really the Upper that houses all of the stuff you want to splurge on? Aside from perhaps a more tuned trigger?

Any good step-by-step resources you could link to for a total newb would be awesome. I'm fairly mechanically inclined so I'm planning to mostly build from scratch and buy stuff in stages as to spread out the cost.
