whaaaaa......If you complain about IP you better not have a Blue lives Matter Skull (Punisher ripoffs) or one of those stickers with the kid that looks like Calvin peeing.
always happy to find a reason to post that....

What if we have a Calvin pissing on a punisher sticker? Is that ok?If you complain about IP you better not have a Blue lives Matter Skull (Punisher ripoffs) or one of those stickers with the kid that looks like Calvin peeing.
Since you bring it up, I’ve always hated those stickers, not so much because it’s an IP violation but because it takes Calvin, a character who represents the pure innocent joy of childhood, and turns it into something crass and cynical and pretty much the opposite of what he is.If you complain about IP you better not have a Blue lives Matter Skull (Punisher ripoffs) or one of those stickers with the kid that looks like Calvin peeing.
Even if a particular casino has closed, the IP, copyright, and/or trademark is still being infringed in many cases. Just because one particular location has closed it doesn't mean its ok to copy the design. Not from reputable vendors - they would not create a label for a live property. The chips are no longer legit if the property has closed - they're just worthless clay discs.
Even CPC won't use inlays identical to chips no longer in use - the inlays have to be different (either have commemorative or some other change).
This reminded me of JSG Boggs, an artist that would hand draw US currency with amazing accuracy, then “exchange” the bills for goods and services…effectively using them as currency, as his art.Question for the group:
If I try and duplicate a US Dollar…. Is it a counterfeit? Or is it a commemorative dollar replica? (Rhetorical)

Ie. A casino is bought by another operator and rebrands. A lot of Horseshoe chips sold thru the Chip Room. Horseshoe Casino still operates elsewhere and uses the same logo, etc.
Even if the name of the city is changed, the logo is usually an exact copy. And just slapping the word commemorative somewhere isn't some kind of cure all for ripping off art.
This is a really good point though.Since you bring it up, I’ve always hated those stickers, not so much because it’s an IP violation but because it takes Calvin, a character who represents the pure innocent joy of childhood, and turns it into something crass and cynical and pretty much the opposite of what he is.
VALID and due to their ubiquitous nature for a time I get it.Since you bring it up, I’ve always hated those stickers, not so much because it’s an IP violation but because it takes Calvin, a character who represents the pure innocent joy of childhood, and turns it into something crass and cynical and pretty much the opposite of what he is.

Thats good comedy? Y'all got a low bar, damn!... and good comedy.
Looks great but what does that inlay even mean...."The LINT"? I don't get it.You're right however one is legal and the other is not. You can copy and change something under fair use.
A direct copy of this would be an infringement of copyright:

But this is legal and fair game:

Not having a giant belly button replace the building on this inlay is borderline criminal.Looks great but what does that inlay even mean...."The LINT"? I don't get it.

You realize that you were going after Pauslon clays and these are ceramic, right? Getting upset about this is like being Amish and upset that someone took your picture. Don’t worry, you still have your soul (ostensibly, unless you’re MatB).Jesus, I just saw the grand casino Gulfport copies for the first time. And for the first time I’m feeling some of what @Ben8257 alluded to. It kinda makes me sick. I spent like 18 months chasing down singles to build a playable set of grand casino Gulfports - one of this hobby’s actual grails. I don’t have them any more, but it doesn’t change the feeling. A feeling that I’m not sure even has a name, and I know it’s a petty feeling. But now any noob and cheap bastard can have a set of Gulfport knockoffs? No sir, I don’t like it.
Yeah, I know it’s stupid. You realize that you were going after Pauslon clays and these are ceramic, right? Getting upset about this is like being Amish and upset that someone took your picture. Don’t worry, you still have your soul (ostensibly, unless you’re MatB).
The knock offs definitely cheapen the originals for me. Seeing so many copies in the home game thread where I have to zoom in to check if original or not desensitizes me to the real thing.Jesus, I just saw the grand casino Gulfport copies for the first time. Clearly you're not familiar with my work...Looks great but what does that inlay even mean...."The LINT"? I don't get it.

100% I feel the same way about that spot pattern because of majestics and others. And it’s a damn shameWhen starting this hobby I had the same experience with the 4v418 spot pattern as it was used my the Majestic CCs. Still not a huge fan of that pattern except for a few small colour combos.
…your grail…Jesus, I just saw the grand casino Gulfport copies for the first time. And for the first time I’m feeling some of what @Ben8257 alluded to. It kinda makes me sick. I think this summarizes the root of my original post. The knock offs definitely cheapen the originals for me. Seeing so many copies in the home game thread where I have to zoom in to check if original or not desensitizes me to the real thing.
Honestly, we could go into a few areas where many actions here aren’t good for the hobby, but people are ok with it. Not everyone here is a collector. Some people just want to play poker with chips that can’t be found at Walmart. We’ve already fleeced new members with “market value”. DYORI think this summarizes the root of my original post.
Yes, fakes are fakes -- ceramic or not -- but when they're regularly promoted and glorified on PCF (especially without description), we all become a bit desensitized to the real thing (e.g., "Oh neat, the seventh home game this week using BTPs!").
Should it matter? No more than some famous person's twitter post mattering. But somehow it kind of does.
@bergs you keep mentioning it's harmless because they're ceramic. Are you saying making clay replicas is what takes things too far? Or is that also inevitable so we might as well accept it, too? Is there a "too far"?
As I shared previously, I don't really care what people do with their money, and don't blame/judge anyone for buying replicas. That said, I just don't see how so many collectors here can confidently claim that fakes are good for the hobby.
I hear what you’re saying and I could almost agree with the feeling; but to me when you look at the two pictures of the Mint and the Lint it’s tough for me to actually get on board with the cards mold “tributes” cheapening the real thing.Jesus, I just saw the grand casino Gulfport copies for the first time. So not worth pointing out something that might be harmful because other things are harmful, too. And not really worth discussing how something might affect collecting since not everyone is a collector. Makes perfect sense ... in an extremely circular logic kind of way.Honestly, we could go into a few areas where many actions here aren’t good for the hobby, but people are ok with it. I am not arguing this point. Just my 2c. I feel the opposite way. I think the fact that people make knock off Rolex watches or knock off PCA chips actually elevates the status of the originals. The knock offs definitely cheapen the originals for me. Seeing so many copies in the home game thread where I have to zoom in to check if original or not desensitizes me to the real thing.
