Have Chinese cards mold replica sets gone too far? (3 Viewers)

In general it seems like there isn't as much of a concerted effort to avoid copyright infringements, or anything close to it, as there used to be here.
When PCA's were all the rage, art ownership was so respected here, I felt obligated to contact the acting holder of the PCA copyright to get permission to have a few custom buttons made. Now, there are "replica" sets posted almost daily.

I don't care either way, just pointing out the shift that has occurred in the custom chip hobby.

IMO the PCA inlay design is on the blah side. It's better than many but overall lacks imagination and doesn't muster imagination. Don't get me wrong, they are nice chips, but maybe the lackluster design is holding back a full-on cards mold copy...err I mean tribute effort? My opinion may be in the minority but there it is.

I think PCA's popularity isn't so much their visual appeal as their feel - they're leaded THCs with shaped textured inlays in near mint condition. That doesn't translate to cards mold.

Only way to fly in my opinion. Besides feel I think the main reason people don’t like ceramics is they are misused as a product. Why create an inferior version of a clay chip when you can make something completely unique?

Because it's cheap, fast, exactly the spots I want, and I don't have $8 a chip money.

I commisioned an Aurora Star tribute set (not a direct copy) with permission..... it's a T100-base set with salmon T1000 (instead of blaze orange) and with the original blood red T5 converted to T100k. Hot-stamp font and details are slightly altered from the originals.

I think the inlay design is simple, classy and descret. It's a much better design than many (maybe even most) other casino inlays. A bright white inlay with no ugly elements ruining the design.

^^ very true. Most casino inlays are poorly designed; compared to the level of artistry we see on custom sets posted here almost daily. Most of which are absolutely stunning.

Not even close. The politics forum is for bloodsport (read: forced gemetria therapy, Frogzilla Logic Leaping, and a relentless, unyielding, crushing volume of quasi-topic-related TikTok videos consisting of fat people on their couches bemoaning the government’s granular control over their life.)
 
My main issue with cards molds is that China has absolutely no respect for intellectual property. Just because they don't, doesn't mean we should condone that behaviour by buying direct replicas of chips that we have no rights to. Theft is theft - whether you're stealing a snickers bar from a 7-11 or stealing someone else's design.

If the corporate overlords at 7-11 didn’t want me to take their Milky Ways, they should have gone to greater length to physically secure them.

I think lack of respect for IP, copyright, and trademark is/was prevalent prior to cards mold chips.

Seems pretty common to see inlay replacements using the actual name and designs of casinos. Ie. People murdering chips and making their own fracs to match a set from a Chip Room sale. A noob could easily be fooled into thinking these were legit chips.

Not from reputable vendors - they would not create a label for a live property. The chips are no longer legit if the property has closed - they're just worthless clay discs.

Even CPC won't use inlays identical to chips no longer in use - the inlays have to be different (either have commemorative or some other change).

If you complain about IP you better not have a Blue lives Matter Skull (Punisher ripoffs) or one of those stickers with the kid that looks like Calvin peeing.
