I've had these Paulson Top Hat & Canes forever. What is this set worth? (2 Viewers)

I don't really want to get involved here but, what timespan are you referring to?

Since 2000? Sure. Over the last 3-4 years? Appreciating - not so much.

Extending my Paulson Classics set is how I found PCF before I even knew what "Classics" even meant. That was in 2020 and I ended up selling my entire set to fund other sets. At the time I joined, Classics were selling somewhere between $3 - $3.50/chip. I sold my set for the same. Today, I'd say that price has remained consistent (despite some of the people that will tell you that these are flying off the shelves at $18/chip).
Since 2006 they have doubled, even at $2 a chip. That's pretty good to me and probably better than my ASM or Chipco sets. I'm used to buying things that depreciate.

I thought you said you were keeping them?
Yes, I don't intend on selling them. But as of this moment in time, I've doubled my money. Maybe they will be worthless in a few years- oh well. I bought them because I liked them- and still do.

Better than depreciation, which is what many things do.
Ah, I didn't realize that you were looking at it from that point of view...it appeared you were boasting that you had doubled your money, with no qualifiers. From your boasting of doubling your money, then, it's not a great investment.

True. I didn't buy them as an investment. My 403b just lost $1,000 last month, so it's better than that I guess.

I have this set of Paulsons forever. I'm considering selling them but not sure if it's best to sell as an entire set... 20 at a time, etc.. Check it out!

I think I'll create a post in the classified section on here and see what I get.

I bought my set back in 2006 for 94 cents a chip and they are now worth $2.00. I've doubled my money.

I guess I'm just confused as to why this thread exists then. Has your set more than doubled in value over the course of 18 years? Sure? $1 in 2006 is worth $1.49 today, so I guess at least part of that is inflation. If your intention to keep them because you like them, then who really cares?

Anyway, they're collectibles the same as comic books, baseball cards, coins, stamps - whatever, so yeah, of course they're going to continue to hold some value. It's not like owning a 2006 Toyota Matrix They also happen to be functional, so, yay.

Anyway, I think everyone's point is that the ups/downs to the chip market are not exclusive to the Classics and the debate between molds is largely personal preference. It's not coincidence though that you'll find the large majority of owners will tell you that THC Paulsons, TRK are at the top of the preference list - there's a reason for that.

Anyway - GLW whatever the OP decides to do and yay Paulson Classics!

Looks like someone was loving the ugly girls... Probably from 5 or 6 years ago when the prices were high.
I wouldnt use that sale ad as a basis for determining the value of Classics from 5 or 6 years ago, or now either. Sure, there may be someone that plunks down that much on an impulse buy, but I think the better indicator of the "market value" is by looking at a larger comp of sales. As was stated, $3 has been seen often, and $4, maybe $5 for the highest denoms is most common around here on PCF...and has been around that figure for a while.

So someone said they were confused as to why this thread exists. I saw a reply to the OPs post that rubbed me the wrong way so i responded to see if that person is the type of person I thought he was. He responded the way I thought he would which was to call me illiterate and a sucker. All the OP was asking for was the price of the chips and he gets response about how his set is inadequate and not high end enough. So I start chain yanking. I do not really care about high end or low end or any other end. I haven’t called anyone names. However I’ve been called names and had my intelligence insulted. I’ve had people say the long timers are educating me. I’m an educator and that’s not how you educate. Maybe we should reflect and start being a little kinder to each other. Or maybe I’m just taking things the wrong way. I’ll just stick to the guitar forum I’m on where the atmosphere kinder. I’ve never seen anyone insult another person’s guitar. We are just happy to have them and happy that we get to play them. As far as being a long timer I’ve been playing poker since 2004 and I understand what you are saying. No need for the insults. It’s what I expected. So farewell everyone and enjoy insulting each other. For those of you who were trying to help I thank you. Sorry for provoking but it the responses were interesting. By the way I know I’m a strange bird. Thanks for your help.

You kinda came in hard and fast, just sayin.

That said, name calling is probably not warranted. However, if you’re intentionally “chain yanking”, as you stated above - then you shouldn’t get your feelings hurt and come back all “preachy”. Just sayin..

We see these kind of posts all the time. Some people come in looking to learn. A lot come in thinking they have a goldmine and looking to cash in. The latter is often very resistant to hearing the truth because of random outdated sales data and ludicrous eBay adds that never sell.

Understandably, patience can wear thin, especially if you’re intentionally “chain yanking”. You won’t get much sympathy here .

To be fair the OP asked specifically about pricing. It's difficult to talk about comparative pricing and not talk about quality differences. If you're offended by that or hearing about how a set you own has a difference in quality compared to a different set by the same maker - then yeah, I'd say you're probably taking it way too personally. Also to be completely fair from your end - your follow-ups were very confrontational and you admit to "chain-yanking," - so should you be surprised at the responses?

I'm not a member on whatever guitar forum you're talking about but I'd wager a guess that if there was a thread devoted entirely to discussion on pricing of a Strat, and you needed to compare the differences vs. a Telecaster or a Starcaster, etc. - the conversation might be a little less friendly. Who knows.

I totally agree that this forum can be contentious at times and there are some members who are just grumps and I agree that any namecalling is not warranted - so maybe just ignore them or block them?

I don't think that you playing poker since 2004 automatically qualifies you as a "long timer" from a chipping standpoint to be able understand what those folks are saying. I was playing poker well before that and I can tell you that it did not qualify me to speak intelligently to the collectability or pricing of chips as soon as I joined PCF.

Disagree.

A Fender is a Fender.

Not true.
But a Gibson is a Gibson.
