The answer is still hero has to get the money in. Waiting for a better opportunity this short stacked is also a path to defeat.

The only debate is whether or not checking or betting best accomplishes this goal.

But obviously, Hero's strategy is flawed to be at this point.

Changes absolutely nothing from my previous comment. Hero has now missed 3 chances to get it in and is ridiculously pot stuck and can't see it.

(Hero has played this so poorly I find myself hoping hero suffered some horrifying one outer at this point.)

As a lot have said, being that short stacked it should've been all in pre. But interested to see how it plays out.
Though when Im short stacked (unless I have a very premium hand), I don't like to shove over the top of someone's open. I'd rather be there first one getting chips in.

You knew there had to be some kind of twist here...

But, playing it straight, without knowing Hero is 7 years old...

So now there are, what, 17BB in the pot, and you have to call 2... which would leave you 4 behind? Or shove 6 into 17? Villain would then have to call 4 to win 23, so s/he’s calling no matter what.

Both have played it like they’re either scared, or else slow-playing a monster, trying to get each other’s stack in dribs and drabs.

I see no reason to just call—get it in now.

Sure, on a scary river Hero could fold... Leaving 4BB to work with at a 6-handed table. No fold equity on future hands when Hero shoves. Going to have to call on next BB almost regardless of holdings.

Now that we have more info on the villain, I would raise to 5BB. Will villain even know it’s illegal? If villain complains, she won’t get any chocolate sauce on her ice cream, unlike all the other villains who appreciate what hero does for this family.

HERO misses the two outer on the river.

"ITS ALL YOUR FAULT I BUSTED DAD. YOU'RE A TERRIBLE POKER PLAYER."

HERO stomps up to bed.

DAD posts hand to PCF to get advice that shows that no matter how you play it (other than perhaps small 3_betting pre flop and getting 4 bet, potentially having a chance to fold) you weren't going to get away from this one. DAD hopes multiple people will post something in that vein.

Well important lesson here that I think a lot of tournament players misunderstand.

Players throw around "wait for a better spot" to easily. Too careful in this regard leads players to bleed themselves ridiculously short where a double up doesn't even help. I would rather go for it with a hand like this, risk busting, than fall under 10 BB in two orbits where the K8s of the world start to look good.
