I still haven’t opened my Elijah barrel proof C920... what am I doing

I'm finding that Hillsboro stores seem to have a good inventory, online anyways. I'm off next Wednesday. Maybe a road trip to Hillsboro is in order.
Call them and ask when their delivery day is and show up when they open. Only way to do it!

Russell’s Reserve is my new go to when I don’t want to down the stuff I have to travel for. Seems like it doesn’t get enough love. Solid drink.

And the chip is the current bane of my existence. These things were super filthy and a ton of work to bring back to life.

Indeed! RR is definitely a very good pour, especially the single barrels, which i tend to like better than the 10yo.

Beautiful chippie, btw!

The RR 10 yr makes a fantastic old fashioned and a good sipper too. Definitely a great value.

Just snagged my back up bottle of MM SE4. That I lay the blame at @ChaosRock feet, for I won’t open one until I have two. Just in case I really really like it.

@Klobberer being the resident MM expert have you tried the 101 yet? Was tempted to grab a bottle.

I have and I like it a lot! Standard Maker's is my go to daily drinker when I want a few glugs with some ice. The 101 is fine on ice, but it really shines neat in a glen. Same buttery richness, but adds some sweetness to the mix. I'm jealous, still none of the 2020 Wood Finishing series in my area.

Ohio degens. I'm flying into Cleveland on Sunday, driving to Erie, PA for a funeral, then back to Cleveland to fly out Tuesday afternoon.

Where should I be shopping? Can I buy liquor on Sunday? I'm really looking for some OWA and EHT Single Barrel.

Possibly controversial but here goes: I feel like whiskey tastes like shit over ice personally. I’ve tried to like it but I think it mutes the best/richest/deepest flavors and highlights the worst parts and throws it out of balance or something. Also for some reason it makes it WAY hotter for me, almost undrinkable. Like I think if you took a hundred different whiskeys and added an ice cube to all of them, they would end up tasting more similar to each other and not in a good way. I think room temp water on the other hand was revolutionary to me - it changes plenty about the character of the whiskey, but in a good way, up until it gets over diluted and doesn’t necessarily taste bad per se, but just tastes like a weaker version of itself. That being said, more and more I’ve been craving a higher and higher proof and only adding water to it if it needs/ helps it.
That being said, I’m still new to this an my tastes are gonna change for sure. So, what are everyone’s thoughts about that?

I only do neat. Too many chemicals in the tap water and I don’t have bottled water near me at all times and if I did probably don’t have medicine dropper. The reason I get into straight liquor was because I don’t want to deal with the hassle of mixing drinks and if I open a bottle of wine I want to finish in by the following night at the latest. If my wife didn’t want wine that means I drink the bottle myself. So dipped my toe into the brown stuff.

I drink bourbon and single malt scotch neat without exception. In the last year I have seriously come around to bourbon with a definite preference for it all things equal.

But my weeknight ”tuesday was a kick in the balls” drink is a 12 Oz glass filled to brim with ice and then with johnny walker red. It sits for a minute before I start sipping.

Anyone who has watched me make this drink either thinks I am putting in way to much ice (whiskey drinkers) or way too much whiskey (relatives, friends that don't get whiskey). Both of these groups are correct.

Shitty ice will ruin your whiskey, for sure. Tap water is chlorinated and chlorine would just be horrible for the flavor and flavor molecules in the juice. I'm not sure sodium or potassium ions have much effect, but calcium and magnesium and carbonate ions (hardness) would not be great, although limestone water does have calcium in it, and the bourbon/Tennessee whiskey companies *love* to talk about their "natural limestone filtered water".

My reverse osmosis system is hooked to my ice maker, so I'm lucky. My ice cubes are pure water and that's it. I would not trust the average bar or restaurant to have a similar setup, so I would have to know it had good ice before hand if I was going to request on the rocks if I was out and about.
