I just have a mickey that I bought for review purposes. Really like the Bulleit, so I am not sure when I will be buying another . . .

Anyone try the Jefferson's Ocean? I'm not sure I buy the story behind it but I like it.

I used to drink this at one of the countries I traveled to on business 6 or so years ago. I never saw it in the US until a friend told me about it recently.

I was surprised scotch was made in Japan? Why is this so expensive now?

It's Yamazaki, unless you're flying a Zero. :cool:
Haha missed this response. I actually called it that when I went to Total Wine the other day. The clerk smiled and made the same correction.

It was their last bottle locked away... Clerk told me they probably won't get more until end of the year?

Wtf is all that ice for?

Whatever I want! :)

The whiskey really opens up with a little water for me. I drink it fast enough that it doesn't dilute and on a hot day it's how I like it.

I will actually add some drops of filtered or mineral water when I drink it neat depending on the whiskey. Never tap or the chlorine will throw it off. A friend who is a bartender showed it to me once and it makes a big positive difference for me.

Ok...there is only one correct way to enjoy a whisky of this calibre with ice:
  1. Place a crystal rocks glass and a bucket full of ice in front of you;
  2. Pour three fingers of fine whisky into the glass;
  3. With a pair of sterling silver ice tongs, carefully grasp the nicest ice cube in the bucket;
  4. While holding the glass of whisky, bring the tongs up level with the glass and toss the ice cube over your shoulder;
  5. Enjoy a sip of lovely whisky.
  6. Repeat as necessary.
;)

Haha. To each their own :). I know to many adding water or ice is sacrilege but for shits and giggles try adding a drop or 2 of water.

Adding water to ethanol is actually an exothermic reaction and will actually raise the temp by a couple degrees celsius. In a whiskey it really opens up the aroma and I like how whiskeys smell. Depending if you use soft vs. hard water it will bring out different flavors. I like to experiment. Drinks and food, it's all chemistry and physics.

How amazing that it took 580 posts to this thread before someone came up with this revolutionary idea!
Its been a while since I've been back on this forum. I am getting killed by sarcasm... o_O

I missed you guys.

Ooh, this is a great thread :) I've been having a lot of fun exploring bonded/BIB bourbons as of late. Henry Mckenna 10 year and Old Grand Dad Bonded (great value selection) are two that I've really been enjoying. Bourbon and Rye are just so fantastic for great whiskies at reasonable prices.

Bulleit Rye Whiskey, 750ml at costco for $30. It's a staple around these parts.

It hasn't come yet. I have a feeling it isn't going to. We had to settle for Blantons, Forrest, Four Roses and Basil Hayden :)
Nice! Not sure that is settling :).

By your definition, I should be settling more often.

That was a gift that kept on giving! What a great night!

Looking for guidance on entry level bourbons, what to go for.

Considering:
  • Wild Turkey 101
  • Buffalo Trace
  • Other (pls advise)
I like the Buffalo Trace as an entry level - it pretty solid for a 'cheap' bourbon imo (although we have no 'cheap' bourbons in the UK).

Anyone got some recommends?

I am not impressed by Bulleit.

Woodford Reserve is fine but it doesn't set my world on fire.

Four Roses Small Batch is pretty decent.

Wondering what to check out next...

Elijah Craig is one of my favorites.

It's at the upper end of entry level, but Eagle Rare 10 Year is a solid bottle.

I've always found Eagle Rare to have kinda 'cardboard-y' notes. Shamelessly exposing my underdeveloped palate here, I know, but there's something in the flavor profile that doesn't quite agree with me!

Three in my rotation right now...

Blantons
Woodford Double Oaked
Jeffersons Ocean
