Michter's Rye vs. Alberta Cask Strength Rye

appearance - the Michter's is darker, by just a touch, which is odd considering it is 80 proof and the Alberta is what, 120 proof?
aroma - Alberta wins
neat - close to a tie here, though the Alberta had a longer finish, so maybe Alberta by a hair - did not necessarily enjoy either of them neat (and recall, I prefer on the rocks, so my opinions of neat whiskeys are atypical)
with one cube - Alberta kills Michter here, just assassinates it. The cube made the Michter quite impotent; it lacked flavor and punch, definitely neutered. The Alberta though, wow. Changed the aroma and the flavor completely. It is like I am drinking a totally different and BETTER whiskey. Really really good. Smooth, great on the tongue, excellent finish.

I'm still amazed what just a little water and a little temperature shift can do to some whiskey.

Anyone try this one yet? 126.6 Proof $70 at CostcoView attachment 644795

I haven't found a bottle yet, Herman, but for the price, I will definitely pick one bottle up when I do.

For me, the HP official age state bottles have been lacking a bit (12 and 18 since the new bottle design) and this Cask Strength brought me hope. It is not that distillery is not producing quality whisky, it is! Some of the independent bottlings have been great. It might be just a question of raising ABV, and stopping chill filtering and adding color.

Anyone trading scotch for bourbon?

My OWA,WSR,Little Book, and Alberta CSR

100% agree. HP demand went up and their quality for the age-stated bottles declined. The outlier was the original 21 year old duty-free, and when that sold out they cut the ABV (and raised the price!) to stretch the remaining stocks, but the whisky wasn’t as good as a result. I wonder if they did the same with the 12 and 18? They shifted their focus to NAS expressions to meet demand and released dozens of them. TBH, I kinda lost interest when that happened, but I’m sure there are some good bottlings out there.

[Edit] But that HP 21 year old 47.5 abv, Heathrow-only, bottle is amazing. Back in the day, I stupidly passed on taking a second bottle when it was 60 GBP (I know, I know)...figuring I couldn’t manage another bottle in the carryon when I already had 6 bottles of whisky in my checked luggage...and when I was next in Heathrow a few months later, it was gone.

Snowy morning here. Stopped in to thank (again) the owner of the local mom & pop liquor store for the incredible George T Stagg he scored for me a couple weeks ago. And he said “I felt bad I didn’t get you a Stagg Jr last time, but thought that you might like one....”

You know how when your buddy gets that prime spot at the bar and has the bartenders attention and is able to keep feeding everyone in your group drinks? Yeah? When are we gonna start seeing some of those drinks!? Pulling some nice bottles at retail... :whistling:

Any time you want a snort, take a drive up to the Hudson Valley--I'm happy to oblige.

The downside to the local shop is stock--he only gets allocated bottles here-and-there, and in tiny quantities (the GTS was only the second one he'd been able to get in the last year or so, and the Jr was one of two bottles of Jr he could get). But I did casually ask him if he could snag an Elmer T Lee.

He does have Angels Envy cask strength 2020, Hancocks Reserve and an EHT (small batch, I think), if anyone is interested, and I'm assuming all are at retail.

This guy seems super cool. I love to support places that don’t price gouge the few special bottles they get.

If anyone finds an EHT *single barrel* at retail please snag it for me. I’ve been looking for months to no avail

I've heard AE cask is great, but I don't care for reg AE so I'm not dropping $200 unless I can try it first.

Lol that’s wild. First time I had scotch, my buddy’s mom was a manger for a restaurant downtown. She poured me johnnie walker blue to the brim. I thought it was so terrible at the time but had to down it to show I’m not a pussy lol.
I actually was the one who got said friend into scotch too. Now that I’ve started drinking bourbon I’ve tried to convert him, but he’s not having it.

Anyone have recommendations on how to help him along? I’m thinking maybe a lot of ice to start

Price check on aisle five!

I hit the only local(ish) store I know of with an above average selection, and I picked up the following. Every store selection I've had from here has been solid so far.

I know I'm going to like the Russell's ($55) as I've had it many times. The Peerless ($80) and Old Elk ($75) are both new to me.

Opinions? How'd I do price-wise?
