I would like to get into scotch but I have no idea where to start.
What would you guys recommend?
Are scotches the same or higher price range than bourbon?
I've only bought a bottle of Monkey Shoulder.

I open my whiskeys but there are some chips I don t use and leave mint. I know many people will hate me here with that....

Man down. Thanks again, @ssanel54.

Yeah, I already fucking hate you dude.

Just kidding, I understand the strategy. But chips are meant to be played, shoved and gambled. DO IT.

There’s some great advice in this thread. There is definitely way more flavor variety in Scotch, so you may need to sample a bit to see what you like

Peerless Rye around me is $95-145 retail. That's why I only have a 200ml...I've heard it varies wildly in taste. I'll have a Bourbon Junkies Old Elk pick coming soon. Russell's picks are $64 by me.
The owner of the store told me, "Normally I'm not a fan of the Peerless, but this barrel is pretty good. Let me know what you think next time you come in."

Thinking about trying an EH Taylor.* Thoughts on the Single Barrel and the Rye? What sort of prices are folks seeing? MSRP?

* Buying one—I have had a couple samples of BP and Rye and liked them.
Single barrel and rye should both be $70ish. But stores often mark up to $100 +

Michter's Rye vs. Alberta Cask Strength Rye

appearance - the Michter's is darker, by just a touch, which is odd considering it is 80 proof and the Alberta is what, 120 proof?
aroma - Alberta wins
neat - close to a tie here, though the Alberta had a longer finish, so maybe Alberta by a hair - did not necessarily enjoy either of them neat (and recall, I prefer on the rocks, so my opinions of neat whiskeys are atypical)
with one cube - Alberta kills Michter here, just assassinates it. The cube made the Michter quite impotent; it lacked flavor and punch, definitely neutered. The Alberta though, wow. Changed the aroma and the flavor completely. It is like I am drinking a totally different and BETTER whiskey. Really really good. Smooth, great on the tongue, excellent finish.

I'm still amazed what just a little water and a little temperature shift can do to some whiskey.
I tried it your way and like the Alberta neat instead. Small sips and flavor for days. To each his own. Although, a couple if glugs on ice does have me feeling fine!

So there is this liquor store in Woodstock, NY, that frequently gets cited in the #overpricedbourbon hashtags on social media. I decided to check it out. It did not disappoint, as far as selection, but the prices were LOLZ. Best value was Yippee Ki Yay for 35% over typical pricing. Everything else was insane. McKenna for 3.5x “normal” pricing around here (and that’s saying something). BTACs were top of the secondary pricing, and everything in between was easily 2-4x retail. Weller Special Reserve is a (relative) bargain at $200.
