Picked these up last week from my city connection. The rye and Old Scout are barrel picks and are quite good. I’m not even a big rye fan and the Wilderness Trail is fantastic.

An evening with Mr Weller... Man, this just gets better and better the longer you leave it.

However, to paraphrase one of the great Chivas ads from Tom McElligott (and as you'll be able to see from how much of my bottle is left): Weller 12 is always twelve years old. Rarely thirteen.

Two bottle kills during my poker league last night: Rendezvous Rye circa 2016 and Aberlour A'Bunadh Batch 61.

That Rendezvous blew me away on its way out. Fantastic blend of Rye whiskies. I had its last two pours after a very, very acclaimed Barrel Proof Bourbon and there was no comparison on which one I liked best. Maybe it was just one of those nights but If asked today, I might say I favor Rye whiskies over Bourbons. Tomorrow might be a different answer, LOL!!!

The A'Bunadh was as good and reliable as ever. And that was one hell of a batch, imo. It's a shame prices have spiked so much recently as this bottle was at one point, the best value in Cask Strength Sherry-ed Single Malts. Maybe because it was my last pour of the night but, it surpassed the Rendezvous slightly and the famous Barrel Proof Bourbon by a lot.

Alright @Big Jilm and @Irish below is my attempt. As I said, it's super hard for me coming up with lists like that, LOL!

A few caveats: I'm only listing bottles I had a meaningful time with it. Some of the best pours I had were a one time only type of deal, so they are out. Out are also bottle that are super expensive. Some are still very pricey but not mortgage level pricey. Most importantly, I'm listing "memorable" bottles as opposed to "best" bottles. There's a subtle but important distinction imo. Memorable bottles have flavor 'hooks' that are more important than balance or class, for exemple. Anyways, blah, blah, blah... Oh, and only one bottle per brand.

Bourbon
  1. Barrell Craft Spirits 15yo First Release
  2. Mayor Pingree Black Label 7yo
  3. Old Carter Bourbon Batch 5
  4. George T Stagg 2015
  5. ECBP Pirate Bottle 139.4 Proof
Rye
  1. Old Carter Rye Batch 5
  2. Kentucky Owl Batch 1
  3. Jack Daniels SB Barrel Proof Rye
  4. Parkers Heritage Heavy Charred Rye
  5. Rabbit Hole Boxgrail Founders Collection
Finished/American Whiskey
  1. Bardstown Bourbon Company Chateau de Laubade
  2. Old Carter American Whiskey Batch 3
  3. Whistle Pig Bosshog The Black Prince
  4. Magnus Cigar Blend Batch 12 (I think)
  5. Haystack Needle Port Finish
Irish
  1. Teeling 24yo
  2. Blue Spot 7yo
  3. Red Breast 12yo Cask Strength
  4. Bushmills 21yo
  5. Glendalough 13yo Mizunara Cask
Scotch Peated
  1. Caol Ila 34yo Cadenheads
  2. Ardbeg Dark Cove Committee Release
  3. Octomore 06.3
  4. Lagavulin 12yo Cask Strength 2017
  5. Laphroaig 10yo Cask Strength Batch 6
Scotch Non-Peated
  1. Glendronach 1993 Single Cask 652
  2. Glenallachie 21yo Batch 1
  3. Springbank 19 Re-Charred Sherry
  4. Craigellachie Double Barreled
  5. Clynelish 1995 Signatory Single Cask 8676
I still feel like shit as I think there are a ton of bottles that deserve to be on the above lists, especially under both Scotch banners. Oh well...

Ok, you scotch experts. Here is the drink list tonight at dinner. Which one(s) should I try. I’ve had Balvenie Caribbean cask and Aberlour 18 before and really liked both. Not a fan of peat.

Here's my un-expert opinion:

I don't like excessive peat either, so I avoid Islay scotches.

Glenlivet is acceptable but unremarkable.

Macallan tastes weird to me. It has a flavor that is unlike other scotches. Bought a bottle once and gave it away.

Glenmorangie is probably the mildest scotch I've ever had. I remember suspecting it might be watered down somehow.

Oban and Balvenie are outstanding. Perfect combo of flavor with that scotchy afterburn.

I hope you do t mind me saying that, David, but they are charging a LOT for the pours.

If it’s me, I’d be between two choices, both Cask Strength: Aberlour A’Bunadh or Glenlivet Nadurra 16. The Caveat again is, they are Cask Strength whiskies so you must be used to high ABV/Proof.

I figured that, but it’s at an event I’m not paying for and probably won’t enjoy, so I may as well pick a drink I like lol. I may try the Aberlour … I’m generally ok with high ABV bourbon, but can’t say I’ve ever tried cask strength scotch.

LOL!!! Fair enough, man... It is just my instinct of looking at the mark-up of whiskies. Some, like the Oban 14 there, they are charging almost half the price of the bottle for a pour.

The Glenmorangie Signet is a fantastic whisky, very chocolate-y to me. I’d try that as well... didn’t want to recommend you a $50 pour. It’s about $200/bottle retail.

The A’Bunadh is ex-Sherry matured and the Nadurra 16 is ex-Bourbon matured, so very, very different whiskies for sure. I like them both a lot.

Oban 14 does have some peat in it.

Love me some Lagavulin 16, I always have a bottle at home. I've always been a fan of the Balvenies as well.

You can never go wrong with Oban 14.

I agree with both of these. Yes, Oban has some peat, but it is just one note in what I consider to be the best all-around, all-weather single malt available.
The A'Bunadh is nice, but it is a sherry bomb (not that there is anything wrong with that).

Agreed, these prices are LOL. Even for NYC those are LOL prices.
