Finishing up a bottle from the Jersey meetup tonight (well, at least round 1):

I don't think I ever posted our selection from this weekend. Many quality drams were enjoyed - in addition to lots of fireball shots :D

I don't care if the word gets out, that 100 proof Cooper's Craft is one of the best sub $30 bottles out there.

Speaking of, having this Barrell Cask Strength Batch #026. I happen to like it, would buy again....if town wasn't sold out. Definitely a lil oaky funk on it, nutty. Red fruit, rich caramel, marshmallow, Nice mouth feel too, oily, with legs on the glass

Wednesday night is Poker League night. And it seems, usually bottle kill night as well...

Last night was McKenna's and Macallan's turn. The McKenna was from a decent barrel, so enjoyable albeit unspectacular. The Mac 12 was from an old bottling year. Although much better than the current Mac 12, it is still light years of what Macallan used to do in a more distant past. Still quite drinkable but imo, there's much better and cheaper alternatives as far as a sherry bomb is concern. Not sure if we can blame Macallan's decline on lack of good casks available (not likely since others are killing it) or just the company's strategy of catering to brand sensitive (rather than quality sensitive) customers. We might never know the answer to that but to me, there isn't a Macallan as we knew it anymore.

So if I went with just one bottle of Macallan, what would you recommend?
I thought I heard the 15yr double cask was good but I am having reservations with the last couple comments.

Just not great.

That is a perfect statement.

And maybe I should just add a bit on what I wrote above about Macallan: it is not a bad Scotch Single Malt by any measure. If offered, I'd still gladly drink it. I wouldn't buy them anymore, personally, since I believe there's better and cheaper alternatives on a similar profile.

My point was that the distillery went from top of the line on Scotch sherry malts to (mostly) super over priced "okay, not bad" whisky. Yes, there is still good releases from Macallan but they are just not targeted to someone like myself as I'm definitely not keen on (even if I could) paying $4K+ for a bottle of whisky.

Need another deep WSOP run, so you can. YOLO :)

I'm always very cautious on recommendations as not only taste preference varies but also budget elasticity. So I can only speak assuming I am the buyer:

There is no way I would pay $300+ for a Macallan 18 Sherry Oak. I would drink it though!

I also wouldn't pay $80 for a Macallan 12 Sherry Oak. I would drink it as well! :p

I tend to prefer Macalan's Sherry Oak as opposed to the Double or Triple Casks personally so that takes care of the 15 and other options on the 12.

If I could find a decently priced (below $100) Macallan Classic Cut from '17, '18 or '19, that would be my pick. The '20 and '21 releases are double cask. The caveat here is that it is a high proof bottle, so not for everyone.

I would rather buy Arran 18, Tamdhu 15, Glengoyne 18, the new Glenturrets 12 or 15, Glendronach 12, 15, 18 or 21, Glenallachie recent batches of 10 CS, 12, 15 and the list could go on a little further.

But again, that is to my taste and budget/value curve.
