Bought a bottle of 4 Roses, and sipped on a little while watching the Broncos this afternoon! Good stuff! I'm gonna try some other bottles that members have suggested in this thread!

I've had some great bottles of Caol Ilas through the years and most were both independent bottlers and cask strength, but great stuff... I wish we had the Farclas 15 here in US... Could never find a bottle but it's on my hit list for sure...

The Askaig is Caol Ila. I understand they're housed at the same location in Edinburgh. The Askaig 19 is bottled at a significantly higher strength (Caol Ila 18 at 43%, Askaig 19 at 50.4%), so it goes further. Needs water to mellow it out, fo shizzle

Which one? Their whole range is good IMO... Single barrels and special bottles are not to be missed albeit pricey...

And good to see another Broncos fan around (although I'm sure you've notice there's a lot more of us since Payton)...

Ive been a fan since No 77!! No, not 7, 77 :)

got a bottle of town branch for xmas.

reviews are pretty brutal and i have to concede that it is a bit sweet, but that sweetness actually helps when you are spiking the eggnog...

I've said it before, but will support the thread-starter: Elmer T. Lee is the best value for money. Hands down. Separate booze threads would be good. Scotch is very different than Bourbon.

The Glenfarclas 15 is very good. Best Speyside I've had in a while. :)

Just their regular stuff. I didn't see anything on the bottle about single barrel, or special edition. Just "Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey". That's all I needed to see.:D
Like I said, I really like it. I'll keep an eye out for some of their high-end bottles.

As for the Broncos, born and raised here in the Mile High City! Been a fan as long as I can remember!

Looking forward to your verdict as this bottling is at an unusual ~50% barley... And the eggnog should be great! 8)

Amen!!

There's no such a thing as bad bourbon!

The 17 is fine, and the 21 is even better -- I like it better than the 25, which is a little bit tired and too sherried for my taste. But no matter how your slice it, Glenfarclas is right up there with Springbank in my book.

Orphan Barrel Whiskey Release #4: Lost Prophet (john hansell)

I wrote about Diageo’s first three Orphan Barrel (OB) whiskeys here back in January. The whiskeys in these bottlings are from either the old or new Bernheim distilleries. As I noted in that post, they vary in taste, from the easy-drinking, gently sweet, and uncomplicated Barterhouse to the dry, spicy, and oak-driven Old Blowhard. Rhetoric, the third release, is somewhere in between those two flavor profiles, but leaning more towards Old Blowhard.

While all three releases are certainly interesting to taste and diverse in flavor profile, I feel that they never quite lived up to their potential. To me, the optimal whiskey is some blend of these three whiskeys, with Barterhouse being the primary component.

Proving that they have other arrows in the quiver, Diageo’s newest OB release, Lost Prophet, is not from one of the Bernheim distilleries, but is rather a 22 year old whiskey distilled in 1991 from what was then the George T. Stagg distillery (now Buffalo Trace) in Frankfort, KY. Similar to the previous OB releases, this whiskey spent time maturing in the old Stitzel-Weller warehouses in Louisville, KY (since 2006 for Lost Prophet), and was bottled in Tullahoma, TN, at the George Dickel distillery.

The mashbill for Lost Prophet is 75-78% corn, 7-10% barley, and 15% rye. Serious whiskey enthusiasts will note that this is similar to the “high rye” #2 mashbill formula at Buffalo Trace—the mashbill similar to such brands as Ancient Age, Elmer T. Lee, and Blanton’s. It’s bottled at 90.1 proof (45.05% ABV) and will list for about $120. Similar to Old Blowhard, this will be a one-time release.

Most importantly, how does it taste? I’m happy to report that it’s the best of the four Orphan Barrel whiskeys released to date. It’s complex, balanced, easy to drink, and not over-oaked. Sure, the spice notes (clove, cinnamon), oak grip, and notes of leather are there (it is a 22 year old whiskey, after all), but there’s also a lovely lower layer of sweeter notes (honeyed fruit, soft vanilla, coconut custard) for balance, along with a nice creamy texture. It’s a complete package.

This is a 22 year old whiskey. If you don’t like well-aged whiskeys, you might want to try it before you buy it. But, when compared to other 20+ year old bourbons in this age range (Pappy Van Winkle 23 yr. old, Elijah Craig 23 yr. old, Old Blowhard 26 yr. old, etc.), this whiskey has them beat. And at $120, it’s a better value.

Tamdhu 10, Speyside. Nice dram.

It got a double gold at IWSC and another gold medal.

There seems to be a correlation between revamping a whisky and it receiving awards, making me think that part of the marketing budget goes on greasing up the judges. :)

Nice easy drinker this.

I enjoyed a few pours of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked at the cigar shop last night, paired with Flor De Las Antillas. I splurged for my birthday and shared with my buds. Had never had it before...will buy again.

It's amazing how many replies there are to this subject and just how many of us enjoy a little snort.

My Family/ Relatives was raised in KY, so I don't dare leave out White Lightning !!!!!

Nexttime how do unlike your little barrel? I just received mine

It was a christmas gift.

It's empty and dry right now. I need to soak it first in water, according to the instructions before I fill it with the un-aged distilled whiskey.

Looking forward to it though. After I age a couple of bottles of whiskey, I'm going to try putting a cognac and then a rum in it. I've heard positive things about it.

Small gloat that would be appropriate here.... Just found this thread. My buddies bought me a bottle of glenfiddich 18 for my bday. Amazing!! Preen enjoying it since then, It may not last much longer

Orphan Barrel Whiskey Release #4: Lost Prophet (john hansell)
....

I came *so* close to landing a bottle this weekend... 8;(

Found a store in Jacksonville, FL, which had a shelf marked for the Orphan Barrel at $124.95. They originally had four bottles, and sold the last one the day before I wandered in. Life is not fair, example #1369...

I have a bit of Glenn Farclas 175th anniversary left. Amazing.

A blend but crazy nice and crazy cheap to boot. Too quaffable. Dangerous stuff!

My personal favorite (sofar) is the Lagavulin 21 (2006 edition). By now they're prohibitively expensive, but when I bought my 2 bottles they were still kind of affordable. For real afficionados I sometimes pour a dram of this stuff, and they all go absolutely bonkers. You really need to take your time with it, as it keeps changing its profile over the course of an hour.

I absolutely hate the Laphroaig 10, but loved the 15. (The 10 is like licking out an ashtray to me :(). Haven't yet tried the 18, but I heard it's a smoother version of the 15.

Daily drams for me are the Lagavulin 16, the Talisker 10 and the Highland Park 18, and occasionally the Ardbeg Uigeadail or Corryvreckan. Ardbegs are just fun whiskies to drink. Very peaty, and very playful.

I've also got a bottle of Blanton's Straight from the Cask. Opened that about 7 years ago, and haven't dared touch it since. It was such a freakin' amazing bourbon I'm afraid it'll spoil me for anything else.

The next two nights in Sarasota are the annual Whiskey Obsession festival -- over 225 whiskies, from over 80 brands. Master distillers and touring ambassadors from Jack Daniels, Angel's Envy, Gordon & MacPhail, Macallan, Glenmorangie and Ardbeg, Bowmore, Diageo, and the Jewish Whisky Company. Speakers, masterclasses, commemorative Glencairn glasses, many samples, including older vintages not available bottled.

I hope to survive. My tennis team has a match at 11:30 am Saturday that is highly problematical...

Single Malt are some of my favorites. Generally the glens are good, Glenlivet, Glenfiddich. A friend gave me an 18 yo Glenfiddich which is almost gone now... My brother has gotten me onto Balvenie.

Recently did some travel and had Glenmorangie and Lagavulin. Both were quite tasty and very different to me.

One of the strange ones for me was a Japanese whiskey. Yamakazi. It was actually quite smooth.
