I want to pick up a bottle of whiskey. I do not have the budget for a 100.00+ bottle. I'd like to keep it in the 40.00 range.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

jbutler's advice is spot on. You can find Elmer T Lee here in MI for about $32... Four Roses SB is great also... No Noah's Mill unfortunately, I had to buy it online... Knob Creek (SB) is the one I brought you...

I would definitely add Eagle Rare 10 yo for about $22 and Elijah Craig 12 yo for about $30...

I'm off at 2 today. I'll be stopping by the butchers, then the liquor store.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

The Elijah Craig was pretty good, and I liked the price (22 I think).
My daughter and her bf sampled it and both liked it as well.

Was opining on the lack of availability of Black Maple Hill (a product I love very much) when a local gentlemen informed me of a local product that supposedly has a very similar flavor profile.

Making a special trip to pick some up this afternoon .

Kinda shocked by an article in yesterday's WSJ, which included the following list of "Top Whiskey Brands World-Wide, 2014"

1. Johnnie Walker
2. Jack Daniel's
3. Officer's Choice
4. McDowell's No. 1 Whisky
5. Chivas Regal
6. Crown Royal
7. Royal Stag
8. Ballantine's
9. Jim Beam
10. Imperial Blue

I've never heard of 3, 4, 7, and 10.

Any experience with whiskies from those brands here?

I'm looking for an Irish whisky to bring to my brother's wedding and pour shots for the wedding party. Any ideas for something easy drinking but that wouldn't be a waste to gulp down and/or chase? The honeymoon is in Ireland, so I'd like to focus there.

Wow! I was shocked when I read the the above list also... I knew nothing about the few brands you numbered above as well Larry... It turns out they are all Indian brands, relatively new, like from late 90s' early 00s' serving India, Africa, SE Asia and in some small portion, Japan, Korea and other Asia countries... We tend to think that we (together with Europe) are a market so much larger than the rest of the world that if it's not offered here it would never make the top selling lists... That was an eye opener for sure...

All the well known (for us) brands in the list make sense imo, right? No Single Malts in the list huh... Still way more $ to produce and age pure Malts than the regular whiskey blends with a ton of simple grain alcohol mixed in... I think for around the same price Single Malts always > than Blends...

As Marvelous pointed out, Bushmills and Redbreast are great choices... I think around the $20/bottle I'd go either Bushmills or Tullamore... Redbreast it's probably my favorite Irish whiskey but I like the more aged ones bit better and then the price goes way up... Redbreast 15 is absolutely great but we're talking $70+...

Powers is good and cheap. Jameson also has wide appeal, is pretty good, and inexpensive. If you go the Bushmills route, I would spend a couple of extra bucks and get the Blackbush.

I'm really enjoying the Elijah Craig that I picked up a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the suggestion!!!

Elijah is what started me in my search of sipping whiskies, about ten years ago here in KS you could by a half for $31, about five years ago the price took a pretty big hike. I think a half is now $52...still a pretty good buy IMO.

Half gallon or 1.75 liter

They are fairly hard to find. Most places only carry the 750's. Hell it's around $30 now for a 750 now.

Picked up the black bush. Will report back.

Forgot about reporting back. The Black Bush was pretty well received. There's a pretty good picture of the bride making face after downing it. She's not a big fan of liquor in general. The more seasoned drinkers were fine with it. I had plenty left after the wedding party toast, so I filled up a flask and poured a few more as the night went on. It was enjoyable, but I'd probably be just as happy with some of the $25-30 bourbons in this thread and save a few bucks.

Bought this a couple weeks back for poker night. Had another nice glass last. Really enjoying it.

OUTSTANDING Bourbon imo... Those are a bit pricey here in MI (State controlled pricing) otherwise I'd drink a lot more of those! :-)

I'm glad it worked out for you. For what it's worth, I agree with your assessment. There are just too many good mid-shelf bourbon options out there.

Blanton's is my personal favorite. Have a bottle of Four Roses that was in the $80-$100 range (some limited small batch, if it is awesome will give the details) have not cracked yet, waiting on 4th of July and fire pit time. Last year I got my brother a bottle of Whistle Pig rye that he has really enjoyed, so might also be one to try out.

If you are making a hot toddy or other winter flavored sipping, this is a good base. Or just plain to sip by the fire.

I don't know crap about bourbon or whiskey other than I like it or don't, sorry I don't have tasting notes or finish comments, best to check the websites for that. I'd say cherry and it really is nutmeg or peat, you get the idea.
