Blanton's is my personal favorite. Have a bottle of Four Roses that was in the $80-$100 range (some limited small batch, if it is awesome will give the details) have not cracked yet, waiting on 4th of July and fire pit time. Last year I got my brother a bottle of Whistle Pig rye that he has really enjoyed, so might also be one to try out.

T

I like a glass of Whistle Pig on occasion. So easy to sip.

My daughter wants to take me to "The Ravens Club" for Fathers Day http://theravensclub.com/kitchen/drinks/. She knows I've recently become a fan of bourbon/whiskey and wants to take me out to try a few different ones, including a The Original Hand-Pulled Old Fashioned. I told her I don't want her breaking the bank. She knows the head bartender (used to work for him, and now works for his wife). She said that he will hook her up.
She is also ending her first semester in a very hard Radiology xray tech program and wants to celebrate.

She said she thought about picking me up a nice bottle of whiskey. Thought this would be more fun to go out. I agree.

Very nice :)

Don Julio 1942 Anejo is right up your alley I'd think :).

I'd definitely recommend trying the George T. Stagg cask strength bourbon. Keep some water handy though...

The selection of Scotch whiskies is a bit limited, but I can definitely recommend the Taliskers (10yo & 18yo), and the Ardbeg Uigeadail (Oogadahl).

I've had that before. It is right up my alley :) I'm going to stick to whiskey's/Bourbons.

I know this is a whisky thread, but if you're into cordials and liqueurs... if they have a Grand Marnier cuvée du Cent Cinquantenaire you really have to give that a try. That's a wicked smooth orange/XO cognac liqueur.

Is it sweet? I prefer my drinks neat. Usually liqueurs have a sweet overtone in my limited experience

How sweet normally are the Old Fashion's. She really wants me to try one. Maybe I'll just sample hers

That's a great liqueur indeed! I don't drink them very often but when i do, it HAS to be a good one... There's a ton of really bad liqueurs out there (even for mixing) giving the others a bad name...

Speaking of liqueurs, it's hard to beat a mix of Laphroaig and Drambuie in a flask for a day at the slopes! :-)

I agree with the 150 Grand Mariner, have a bottle in the bar for those late night cigar snorts with the brothers. I am not a big cognac fan, but this is tasty and smooth, nice with a spicy stick. Full disclosure, I smoke maybe 2-3 cigars a year, so the bottle has lasted a while. 4th is coming up soon, so brothers and I will be toasting soon.

Not familiar with Laphroaig, Drambuie always gives me a headache.

Cheers,
BiGGyT

Old Fashion is typically orange and cherry muddled with sugar and bitters, whiskey, and then topped with soda. Mine tend to have more fruit (add lemon/lime to muddle), no soda.

Old Fashioned is a true classic whisky cocktail. If it's made right, it doesn't get much better. Not big on soda water being in the recipe. Another insanely great bourbon or rye drink is a Manhattan. I could sip good Manhattans all night...

A good Old Fashioned is the nuts, but they are like mojitos. The result varies greatly from bartender to bartender

This was an absolutely awesome night with my daughter. Her buddy is the "General Manager" of the place. He did hook us up. Our bill was half of what it should be.

We started with an Old Fashioned. It was good. Not great. Sweeter than what I like. I usually enjoy my drinks "neat", so I expected it to be to sweet for my tastes. Then her buddy came over. Heather introduced us. This guy is about as whiskey/bourbon knowledgeable as it gets. We had a very enjoyable conversation with him while he was explaining the differences between the whiskey's, bourbon's, ect...... Then he brought over a flight of whiskey's (four) that were all pretty good. Me least favorite was the "wheat".

I really enjoyed the I.W. Harper (ordered a second one for desert) and the

. Those two were easily my favorite.

There was also a Berhiem (or something like it) in the mix. It was ok.

Over all, the entire evening was awesome. My daughter and I hung out for about 3 hours just bullshitting, and sipping on some good whiskey (I think I'm leaning more towards the rye drinks). Dinner was very impressive. I had a pan roasted whole trout. Holy shit does this chef know what he is doing.

That looks familiar [emoji6]

We're mostly straight whisky sippers, but we do love Boxcars. And they can be made with Calvados, Cognac, Armagnac, rum -- almost anything, really, with or without a sugared rim.

Sounds like a great night! Have you ever had a Sazerac? That might be the cocktail for you.

Meant to make a comment about @Poker Zombie tasting of Johnnie Walker Blue label at his Vegas trip report thread but writing here is probably more appropriate:

I really like the Blue Label Zombs, I think it's a great blended scotch of super high quality... My issue with the 'Blue' though is the price... For that amount you can get some AMAZING single malts or even two or three bottles of great single malts... So in a vacuum the Blue is one of the best blends around for sure but from a value and quality perspective I favor single malt alternatives almost always... Important disclaimer: I don't have the bank roll to drink 'Blue' priced bottles too often :)

@pltrgyst : Are those Boxcars cocktails similar to the Sidecar? The Sidecar (with good cognac) might be my favorite mixed cocktail, no sugar rim as well, LOL!!! And speaking of cocktails using the same base (spirit/cointreau/lime), I LOVE some Whiskey Smash as well... I had one here in MI in which they add a small basil leaf to the 'smash' and the drink was to die for... I believe they used Knob Creek as the base...

@BiGGyT : My Old Fashioned is a bit more on the classic side man... Only Rye, Bitters muddle with cube of sugar and a small orange peel (and ice)... No cherry, no orange slice, no club soda.... Oh soooooo good!!! :)

Chaos. Sounds like the old fashioned I had last night

And you found it too sweet? It could be a matter of finding the right amount of sugar for you... I'm usually just a neat whiskey drinker as you know :) but some mixed cocktails sometimes hit the spot...

I'm the same way. Like it "neat". I liked the OF. It maybe wasn't too sweet. It was definitely borderline for me.

The five other whiskey's (well, 6, cuz I had two I.W. Harpers) were all drank "neat", and they were all damn good. The wheat one was just to mellow for me.

I want to add to the quality of the drinks. The atmosphere of the joint was awesome. It almost had a speak easy feel about it. My 25 was excellent company. She knew several of the employees including the GM from other establishments. They all seemed really nice. Commented on what a great worker she is/was.

It was just a great "Father/Daughter" experience.
