Have you tried any of the willett distillate? Old Kirk, Hirsch 6y, barrell bourbon dueling barrells, purple tops?

I was like you until someone ruined me
I have had the willet 4 year rye which was really good and I need to get a bottle, and willet small batch which was like burnt toast.

View attachment 932157This is my first ever taste of this as it’s also the first bottle of it that I’ve ever seen in a store.

This really brings the heat but it’s not overly obnoxious in doing so! It’s nowhere near as sweet as I was expecting it to be, but it’s very good. After a little rest, it settled in nicely and I’m thoroughly enjoying this!
That shit is really good and reasonably priced

Heading to a cabin for the weekend. I need a good 'firepit' scotch. I'm wonder if something sweeter is in order as I'll already have the smoke in the air.

Imho you don't necessarily need something sweeter (though I usually do prefer a barrel proof bourbon by the fire instead of scotch), but rather something with a little extra kick/flavor. With the smoke in the air, I have a tough time tasting all the flavors in a very smooth dram, as the nose/palate is already heavily engaged with the campfire smoke. I really like the Port Charlotte heavy peated you recommended a while back or something like a Highland 12 or Ardbeg Wee Beastie for a fire.

Yeah, I've totally ruled out anything irish or low proof, completely agree with your take on it. Port Charlotte may be a good answer here, and I've got a few of the special PCs so maybe that's the right call.

I may also bring a flash or a sample bottle of a high proof bourbon or rye that I like just to mix it up once.

Late post for Fryeday!

I went to the bourbon game last night - lost my ass. Multiple big coolers, whiffing draws all night in multiway pots, and folded to a huge bluff by the drunk host that I should have called. It's a fun, soft $50 max game, and I walked away down $190 but got some great food and whiskey and had a blast with the guys (who are all 20-25 years younger than me).

Besides the mandatory WT101 Old Fashioned, I compared a store pick Buffalo Trace with the standard BT and Eagle Rare. Host hates BT but loves this particular store pick, but I didn't notice a huge difference between the two. And I preferred the Eagle Rare to both.

I also tried a store pick of Whistlepig 10 year Single Barrel Rye:

Honestly, it was ok but not my thing. Smooth and very, very light at first, then you get the double-smack in the face of rye and alcohol. I love a strong, spicy rye, but I also prefer that they have the body to back it up and to temper the booziness a little bit.
