So would most of you agree I'm at least not making a huge mistake if I start out with the Glenmorangie Lasanta?

Fly out to DC and I’ll host a tasting and poker game!
If you do, drop me a note as well. I have a couple items on my bar to throw in the mix for any tastings.

My group is mostly NoVa with a couple guys downtown.

It’s only a mistake if you don’t like it. :p
I'm not going to "not" like it. It's got to be at least as good as the others that I have tried. And I have no expectations that I'm going to start drinking a lot of scotch and back off from bourbon and rye which I love. I just want something on hand that is better than your basic $25 blended scotch. So when someone stops in who drinks Dewars or Chivas and says what do you have that's not bourbon, I can offer them something tasty that's a step or two up from their regular. And for myself, I want something a little better and a little stronger than the first tier of 80 proof single malts.

Any of the Laphroaig bottles are solid. Scotch last me for years. I prefer bourbon, but sometimes you just want something a little different.

Hmmmmm……

We're fortunate that a regular in our game works for the largest liquor distributor. So pushing new offerings and tastings are opportunities he's always chasing.

You'd be doing him a favor to sample his spirits. ;)
Uhhh…. So… I was totally going to look for an opportunity to do this. I think you just made this really feasible. DM inbound.

OK, I've mentioned this before, but it's time to add a bottle of scotch to my cabinet. I've recently kicked a couple bottles of bourbon, so I have a little room. Need some suggestions for a "best bang for the buck" bottle. Preferably around $40 or less. Something that a scotch drinking guest will enjoy and something to gauge future "better" purchases against.

I've been thinking 12 year single malt, but there aren't too many in that price range. I was at Total Wine a few weeks ago and picked up what sample bottles they had. Tonight I opened all three. Honestly, they were all pretty similar. The Grangestone might have been slightly better than the other two. The Chivas might have been the worst. But I'm definitely not an educated scotch drinker.

The ones above are all 80 proof. I'd prefer something more around 90 proof. These 5 bottles are available at Total Wine in the $40-50 range. Any of them worth considering? Anything less expensive that I should consider? Is it silly to exclude anything that's 80 proof? I believe all of the above are well under $40.

Oh, and I'm not ready to try Islay yet. So Highland or Speyside only for now please.

I commend the 'I want to have something for the scotch drinker who comes by.' I do the same for Rye/Bourbon.

Something worth knowing is that proof for scotch is not normally as high as proof for bourbon. A lot of producers mainline stuff is going to be 86 max. The average of all of my single malts(several which are cask strength, max of 61.2% ABV) is 94 for example.

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but you wouldn't be totally off base to keep a bottle of JW black around for the occasional scotch drinker that stops by.

If you get the Glenmorangie, please try and find one with the old label, someone should be shot for the new label's art.

I second Glenfiddich and suggest the 15 Solera cask as something which is approachable and also interested for the regular scotch drinker.

Honestly, JW Black…alot of people drink it and it’s a great candidate to have in the house for company
