Happy Fryeday (finally)!

About to crack this bottle open because it’s been a crazy busy week so I haven’t been able to post this earlier but big thanks to @joeyshin for this great gesture. Here is the bottle I won for guessing his total amount of chips. At least we get one reveal before the year ends. Cheers to the weekend fellas ;)

From the guy that is only chasing age stated Japanese whisky. I was expecting a bourbon or rye. Very interesting...

Poker tonight so no scotch. Posting yesterday's results.

Day 15: Gulliver's 47, 47%. Before you can get your nose to the glass you can smell the campfire smoke coming from this whisky. However, closer nosing brings about a sweet citrus of orange, barley, that gets overpowered and turns back into smoke and charcoal. First taste is light and youthful, butterscotch turning to cinnamon and sugar. The finish continues with the cinnamon, which stays hot throughout, and combines with ginger and dried peaches. This dram is unique, but in the wrong way for me. 4/10.

Day 16: Port Charlotte 10 Year Old, 50%. A sweet aroma of apple blends with peat. The taste of this dram continues with apples, sherry, and vanilla through the first taste and finishes off with lemon, apricot, apple, and smoke. Overall, this was a very pleasant dram that isn't overpowering or complex. 8/10.

Day 17: Smokehead Unfiltered, 46%. The nose on this is smoke, earth, vanilla, and almonds. First taste is of almonds, dark chocolate, and pepper. The finish is smooth and nutty with a hint of dark chocolate at the end. Personally, I don't love the almond/nut flavoring as much as it reminds me of amaratteo. 6/10.

Day 18: Laphroaig Lore, 48%. Nosing this dram is peat first, followed by vanilla, oak, sea salt, and leather. The flavor of this whisky is salt, chocolate, candied apples, and peat. These flavors disappear into ash and toffee and of course more peat. As a Laphroaig fan, I'd definitely rate this higher than the 10 year offering, even with the quarter cask, and below the 15 and 18 years. 8/10

After writing about it above, I picked up a bottle to try. Ardnamurchan ADCB 022201. I’ll dive into it this evening, perhaps. Half peated using a mix of 2015 and 2016 barrels, with a couple 2014 thrown in for good measure.

The interesting part is the ability to get a full peak into the bottle by scanning the QR code. It tells me which bottle number it is, gives tasting notes and provides all the details into the process by selecting each of the links.

Tasting notes:
Nose: Smores by a camp fire on a pebbled Ardnamurchan beach. Orange oil and popcorn.
Palate: Bitter orange marmalade and dark chocolate. Smouldering charred marshmallows and sea salt. A perfect savoury dram to enjoy with friends

Sounds delish.

Some of what they provide is completely useless to me (as I have no idea what a mash water temperature do) but interesting.

Here’s the full run-down for mine if you’re interested.

The blockchain bit is total gimmick as there are no legit uses for blockchain. The whole thing might be a gimmick, unless there’s something in the data you want to look for. Still, it’s fun, but taste will determine if it’s good.

Update: half peated is still peated. The peat is a bit stronger than I like, but otherwise a nice looooong sipper.

My bourbon friend poo-poos this, but I found voyage 23 to be rather enjoyable.

At a minimum, I assume the gentle rocking agitates the liquid, exposing more of it to the barrel surface.
This is Voyage 28. It was given to me for Christmas by someone who knows I like whiskey and knows I like the beach lol.

It’s not my favorite bottle but they certainly could have done worse!!

Back to scotch tonight....Should've stayed home from poker yesterday and bought a 24 bottle advent calendar instead.

Day 19: Smoky Shores from Wemyas Malts, 46%. Smoky peat, ash, and citrus permeate from this glass. The taste is of strong pepper, smoke, and maritime flavors of sitting by a fire on the beach. This lasts through the finish which adds some dark chocolate into the mix. This dram was hot for a 46% and the pepper notes were most prominent making it hard to distinguish the other flavors. 5/10.
