Binions & Starlites

Mountain Clubs and Docs would be 3rd 4th

For whatever reason, Lakeshores don’t do it for me.

I wish I could select three but for me RVCL and Lakeshores and Starlites are tied with the other two but it said to pick two lol.

Mixed sets are for when you’ve got some cool chips that don’t make a full set. We don’t shuffle complete grail sets together to see what happens.
I need a punch bowl to smash.

Opinions vary, but I disagree with this.

There should be no (and isn’t any) hard and fast rule as to what mixed sets are for, or when they should be used. Just because a $5 exists in a full casino set collection, there’s no reason to have it live there always. For example, I recently used my Horseshoe Gardena $5s in a mixed set for one of my home games, and then returned them to its siblings once the game was done. The players loved the mixed set, and it created variety.

“Grail” is also very personal. If someone has Lakeshores, Giraffes and Doc’s and wants to create a fun mixed set for a “California card room game night”, I think it might be a fun exercise to see if the progressions, spots and colors work well for that.

Again, opinions vary.

I disagree completely. Some of my fondest memories are of interchangeable mixed sets that included chips from several epic sets in their own right.

I just realized that all the sets in the pictures were from @Windwalker's collection. That's just... orgasmic.

I have to wonder though, with so many stunning dream sets, is there ever a difficult choice about which one gets used?

I’ve been playing regularly with some SoCal PCFers (@Steppenwolf, @WhiteMamba1646, @wonderpuddle, @TKO, @horseshoez and @TricycleClub,) and we are just rotating through the chips!
Yeah, it’s interesting. When I first stumbled onto this hobby, I thought one set of cash and one set of tourney chips would be more than I would ever need.

Now I think it more just a factor of how often one plays. I currently have two cash sets, with a third enroute. I think, for me, four cash sets would be the sweet spot number, allowing for regular rotation every one or two weeks. After all, chips are meant to be played, and I always feel bad leaving them on a shelf.

Yep I think I thought the same thing. But now there's so many different combinations of sets that you can make that I don't even know if four is enough.

It's hard to find time to play, forgetting the pandemic, more than once every three or four weeks. But I have to imagine that as I get older and my kids eventually leave the house that I'll have more time for home games.

It's actually a question that I've been too scared to ask, "if I expect to keep these chips for 40 years, am I going to be sad in 15 years when they start to crumble? Or will they really last that long..."

That is actually not a bad idea at all. I’m uniquely positioned to do it. Any lineup requests, folks?
Alright, I'll take a stab, but it was hard to keep myself to just one. Trying not to repeat any one casino in the lineup...

RCVL 50cent
Lakeshore 1
Outpost 5
LCO 25*
Jack 100
Starlite 500
Binion 1000
*If going with a 20 instead of a 25, replace with Coke Giraffe 20

Jack hundo would be weird because it’s unleaded and RHC, no?

Yes, you're right. Wasn't looking closely enough at the pics.

Maybe just replace the Jack Hundo with the Horshoe Gardena 100?

Or, to stay with a black hundo, switch it up to...

LCO frac
Lakeshore 1
Outpost 5
Giraffe 20
RCVL 100

Starlite 500
Binions 1000

It is not possible to go wrong here in my opinion. But if I had to choose, I would take the Lakeshore Inn & Starlite set :D

Unfortunately predictable picks in the Lakeshores and Starlites.

Docs sad showing is definitely due to the lack of denominations available. If that set had a frac, hundo, etc., it would be easily be top three. Would have pushed the Starlites out of top two for me. Beauty of a set.

It has a hundo, I just forgot to include it in the photos :)

I think I like the Jacks most out of all of those. They might not be the rarest, but they just look damn good.

Dunes 2nd. Can't dislike a classic like that.

These are some really awesome sets! My top two are:
1. Giraffes
2. Lakeshores
