Just curious where people believe their own skill levels to be at. I seem to play with a lot of people who talk the talk but never walk the walk. Claiming they play all the time, when I begin to discuss strategy with them, every concept and term is over their head.

1- Novice and just learned the rules

3-

5-Break even player, understands most terminology

7

10- Professional or seemingly does not have losing sessions

I think that self awareness in life is crucial and just as important at the poker table, if you don't know how your skill level ranks, how can you gauge your play?

I do understand there are probably some players in this forum better than some "pros" but lack the initial startup funds to be a true poker pro and make a living off of it

My own assessment for myself is probably around a 6.5

6 or 7 seems about right for me too. I don't think pro and "doesn't lose" should be the same level though. I would be a "pro" if my income came soley from poker...and what a lousy income it would be.

5 for cash and either a 6 or 7 for tournament for two card games.

Omaha and other multicard games probably a 3 or 4.

I would have said I'm better at cash than tourneys. Maybe a 6 for cash?

However a check of my tourney stats shows 30 tourneys played this year. Of those, I cashed in 43% and scooped 5. These were mostly 40-60 entry games. Guessing my score would be a 7? Not really sure how my stats compare to the normal, but I'm happy with the numbers. Not enough money or skill to turn pro. And I like being married. :)

I'll take a 6.5 in most any game I've never played after sitting in for an orbit... poker is poker.

Tourney 4
Cash game 3

Though looking at other's self rankings, I see why I hemmorage so much money at meet-ups.

Cash: 6

Tourney: No better than a 4.8.

I've scooped some SNG's and can handle my own in turbo formats, but I've not played enough longform tourneys to judge myself any better than a 5, and I put myself slightly below that since I'm judging myself relative to other tourney players.

If @ChaosRock isn't at my table I always think I'm a 10.

^^ You, sir, are a funny man...

I have a card protector so I'm likely a donk... ;)

And as a donk, I tend to overestimate my skills so put me down for at least a couple of points behind @Ronoh across the board, maybe more in Limit games... Realistically, cutting his rankings in half is probably where I stand...

This is such an interesting question. On several levels.

You're asking people to self evaluate, which isn't' always easy. Luckily, I keep a running log using "Poker Income Pro" app on my phone (highly recommended), so from a statistical standpoint, I have data to go on, but the subjective response from many might be vastly different than actual numbers.. Self evaluation like this brings up so many more questions IMHO...

First off, I see this community as a gathering of poker and chip enthusiasts. One would think that we have a higher capacity for the game. I have read many strat threads here that make me believe that this community would/should be above average in their comprehension of poker strategy. I think I play ok, until I read some of the multi-level thinking in these threads. Then I think I have just gotten very lucky (to fall into the profitable camp).

The other question that comes to mind (if people are being honest here), is I've seen several people respond with numbers below 5, which was "break even". I just have a hard time understanding how members of this community are losing players. I don't play for money... well, yes I do, but I don't play professionally. I play because I enjoy the game (a lot), and I know there are many people who study the game way more than I do. But as much as I enjoy the game, if I wasn't at least break even or "profitable", then I would not be playing poker (very much). So if people "know" they are not profitable, are they just willing to donate continually to play? This is not meant to demean anyone who might not yet be profitable. I'm assuming they just have loads of disposable income, and playing cards, collecting chips is something they enjoy enough to pay to play? I'm hoping it's not the story of someone who is losing their mortgage payments and/or their families due a gamboling problem.

Anyway, fascinating question, really. I'm sure my post makes very little sense, and I'm probably rambling a bit. My brain is all over the place on this question, but that's probably the result of growing up with a step-dad who was one of those who lost everything due to his gamboling addiction (our house, my mom's retirement, family, etc...).

As a "4", I can solidly tell you that my career losses are greater than my career winnings. Not a mortgage, but few payments (mostly from larger buy-in WSOP losses). I play because it's a source of entertainment, not a source of income. At my home game, I do quite well, because there are a number of sub-4 players there to help cover the costs of some of the meals I provide. My career winnings do not take into account home game earnings or meet-up losses, just casino wins/losses.

I do have a January trip scheduled for the Vegas south strip, where the average ranking will be closer to my 4, compared to Caesars or Wynn. Going to use some of the tips I've learned here and try to incorporate them and hit that magical number 5.

PS before Black Friday, I was a 5 closing in on 6. Not getting daily play has hurt my game. F-you government.
