BEWARE - PCF MEMBER MIKE MAC (3 Viewers)

I've fallen for the "I get paid on Friday" story before (not on PCF, just generally). Never again.

If you're so assed-out that you can't scratch up $200 before your next paycheck, why should a stranger extend free, unsecured credit to you? You don't even have a friend or family member or anyone you could borrow from? A credit account you could lean on? Savings you could pinch for a couple days? That says a lot. And it's for a disposable-income kind of purchase like a set of poker chips—or even to buy raffle tickets for poker chips? GTFOOH.

The rest is all just excuses, AFAIC. The car accident, the bike accident, the chains of PayPal accounts, all of it. Just stories. I'd bet folding money that he can't use his PayPal account because he pulled some shenanigans with it or owes money he's refusing to pay.

Unless you legitimately trust someone on a friendship level, it's just not worth it. People like this are an absolute headache to deal with, and there's a good chance you will never see your money.

This right here. Anyone borrowing money for an unnecessary and somewhat cheap purchase is a bad sign. The car accident crap seem like a standard line for these types.

Hell, I lent a childhood friend about $300 many years ago for guitar. I knew him all my life and he said he would pay me the next Friday when he got payed. To him six months to pay.

I’m mean, holy crap, you want to borrow $200 for a poker chip raffle that you probably won’t win and you don’t even have the funds in a bank account to cover it??? Priorities

This thread makes me sad. My very first purchase off this site was from Mike Mac. It went off without a hitch. I hope that this all can be resolved quickly and justly.

Never borrow (or lend) to gamble. This applies to poker, raffles, investments, and practically everything else.

How did you find this guy to do the transaction?

He is active on The Chipboard and a member of Casino Collectibles Association. I don't want to say too much until its clear what is going on. If the chips just show up late and were stuck in customs (very unlikely) then I don't want to have pointed fingers prematurely. Every week that passes the possibility of just plain getting ripped off increases.

I will give it a few more weeks and then make a formal complaint through the CCA.

Is it just me, or is "when I get paid" as a repayment condition a massive red flag that there will be a delay or inability/unwillingness to pay? How many other repayments were promised for that payday?

Then the due date comes, and cue the car accident, medical problem, family emergency, and/or sudden inability to respond to messages or answer the phone.

As much as I don't love debt collectors, sometimes I can understand why they get so tough with people. If I had to wait six months for someone to pay back a small loan he promised to pay in a week, I would probably never take his word for anything again.

This whole thread is why I don’t lend money. Not to friends, not to family. Good luck getting your funds, the whole situation stinks (n)

Good policy.

The way I feel about it, if I wouldn't just give the money as a gift, I won't lend it either. And if I'd be willing to give it as a gift, I may as well do that. Then at least the relationship doesn't stand to get wrecked.

FWIW, I have, on two occasions, lent money to a person who was, at best, a remote friend.

First time it was like $500 and second time it was substantially more. First time I was told when I'd be repaid, and I was, on time, and with an extra $100 for the trouble. Second time, I was also told when I'd be repaid, that time came and went with an explanation and it kind of fell off my radar. When I contacted him, he said he was about to contact me and within a few weeks, the debt was repaid, again with $100 extra.

There are people out there whose word is still good and who need a little help, but aren't looking to scam you.

These transactions were to pay bills, not to buy poker chips. Both times I lent out of my poker bankroll and was prepared to never see the money again.

Good Karma to come your way bro, everything happens for a reason, Karma will set in and hopefully Mike will come to senses and repay me. It's sad that he can still host weekly games with players that are also members here and not feel ashamed.

Who said he's not ashamed?

That may be the reason he's gone radio silent.

Don’t get me wrong. My example was to illustrate that you shouldn’t even trust close friends that can’t evade or hide from you like a stranger. And even in my example I was 30% I wouldn’t get paid right away. He had a low paying job and was struggling to pay child support. He did offer to lend me another guitar of his as collateral though.

Just an FYI, I've had an occasion where a package was stuck in customs for 6 weeks with no updates (from US to Canada). Most get through right away.

Difference being, it's not Customs who aren't responding to his many many messages... And he isn't waiting on a package.

You missed the fact that I was responding to Lemonzest in regards to his own payment with lack of response scenario he mentioned above.

I've traded with Mike and it went fine and will happily continue to do business with him if this gets resolved.

Same here.

A bit of over reaction all around if you ask me. (Albeit Davin's anger is more justified.)

I had a work phone - no data - @Tommy delete my account please

SMS and phone calls work with out data.

Even if this was the case, communicating to davin that you'd be out of contact for some time would have made this look less negligent than it appears currently.

Ceasing communication *(deleting your account) also makes you look more negligent. Think of someone being criticized on social media. If they have a valid point, they'll talk it out to prove their point. People who'd rather not listen to reason, will tend to just block the person who's criticizing them rather than lay out the facts to prove their side.
