TEQUILA (1 Viewer)

When you fresh squeeze the lime juice, use home made simple syrup, and a fine tequila, oh man that's some tasty stuff...Maybe the perfect drink

Cheap tequila always gave me brutal headaches, and turned my ex-wife into a raging violent horror movie villain, so it was just never a go to for drinking. HOWEVER - a vacation to Mexico 2 years ago turned me on to the joys of sipping very fine tequila straight. As a bourbon lover, I immediately noticed similarities with respect to tasting. Both have very distinct flavors and notes depending on the location where the agave was grown, the distilling process, age, barrel type, etc etc. With some fantastic tips from the locals I discovered a whole new world, and over the last two years have grown to absolutely love tequila. It's now my spirit of choice. For sipping, if $$ is no object, nothing beats the Clase Azul Repo, in my opinion, although Don Julio 1942 comes close. I also found two in Mexico that were delicious and hard to find in the US, at least in my area - Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia and Casa Dragones . For my taste, the best sipping tequilas are Reposados, but I have found some Anejos and Extra Anejos that I thoroughly enjoy. El Tesoro, Grand Mayan, Milagro Barrel Reserve, Prospero, Forteza, all excellent. For margaritas I stick to the Silvers (Blancos) because I think the citrus notes work better in the cocktail - my preferences run to Don Julio, 1800, and Milagro. Avion and Riazul are also delish. The best margaritas are the simplest, imo. Tequila, lime juice, agave and a touch of good orange liquor, like GM or even Cointreau.

My tequila journey has been a real pleasure - I encourage anyone to try as many as possible.

If you're making margaritas, there's no point in using anything resembling premium tequila for that - it just ends up being a waste of money. This pretty much goes for any liquor that may be considered top shelf.

Tequila makes some fine mixed drinks and cocktails. But for those who prefer straight, I keep a bottle of Patron Gold around.

Try some casamigos. Really good and smooth especially for the price. Anejo is great for sipping. I use the silver in margaritas. Around here, roughly $35-$40 a bottle for silver

As a follow up to the tequila and specifically the Margarita's being discussed.
Please post your best/favorite margarita recipe.
3 day weekend coming up shouldn't go to waste!

To a point, I agree with this, but regardless of the liquor, I can tell the difference between the same cocktail made with rail and with a higher end spirit. It's like cooking - the better the ingredients, the better the dish.

lol, I forgot about this thread...

LOVE this one. Grand Mayan Ultra Aged (Extra Anejo)

And yes, I sip the anejo and extra anejos, and mix the blancos and reposados in my margaritas/cocktails. I do not take shots of ANY type of liquor anymore. I would rather sip and enjoy. I guess I'm getting older, lol

Many of the under $30 brands of tequila are made using a diffuser to remove the sugar from the raw agave plant. It’s much cheaper and faster this way. The better more expensive brands cook the agave to release the sugar, and you can taste it in the final product. The problem is, it’s not always easy to find which brands are diffusing and which ones are cooking.

What is preferred in Margarita's? Blanco? Reposado? or something else?
Blanco.

I enjoy Casamigos or Patron Silver in mine.

1oz Contriu or how ever it's spelled
2oz tequila
1.5oz lime juice
Splash of agave nectar

Shake shake shake.

I’ve had the Anejo Milagro in Toby’s post from the first page straight up no training wheels many many times and can testify it is great stuff.

Espolon is my go to tequila for margaritas. Lately though I've been using mezcal for a bit of a "smoked" margarita.

I haven't tried the casamigos but I've seen it is quite popular so I'm thinking of picking up a bottle of the silver and giving it a try to see if it lives up to the hype.

Tried this for the first time this past weekend (Clase Azul Anejo)... my new favorite. Picked up the last one in BevMo inventory in the area...

Otherwise, my go to is Casa Migos or Don Julio 1942.
Clase Azul is my all time favorite. At roughly $100 a bottle and at the quick rate that it evaporates I can't stock it too often.

This - with a touch of homemade simple syrup or agave. And with citrus juice involved, I find shaking works best. Simple simple simple.

Yes to homemade simple syrup or agave and a double yes to shaking.
It a good idea to shake any cocktail involving citrus juice, and with a margarita, shaking really opens up the tequila as far as flavor and aroma.

This thread is making me very thirsty  .

Just a heads-up to you margarita drinkers, while nothing can replace making it fresh, if you need to resort to a bottled mix, the best out there (as confirmed on the tequila forum) can actually be found at Costco. The Kirkland margarita mix is fresh lime juice and cane sugar (no high fructose corn syrup like all the other mixes). 2 big bottles at a reasonable price. Note that this recommendation is for the mixer and NOT the bottle that already has tequila in it.

I strongly disagree with this. Good tequila makes good cocktails.

I have been getting into Tequila over the past year or so. By far my favourite brand is Fortaleza. Their blanco is my favourite tequila and liquor of all time. It can be ordered online for about $40 USD from Old Town Tequila for residents of the USA.

Other notable and very good brands I have enjoyed are: 7 Leguas, Tapatio, Arette, and El Tesoro.

Patron is a well made product but much of the natural agave flavours have been removed through the refining process. It is overly purified IMO and its popularity is the result of very good marketing. I am not knocking it, still a well made product that belongs on the top shelf.

BC liquor stores have very recently begun carrying El Tesoro and Tapatio at select stores which is amazing as these were previously only available in the US.

Fortaleza is impossible to buy in Canada and only available in the US but it is worth searching out.

PS. Tequila Matchmaker is a great resource where you can look up pretty much any Tequila and see how it has been rated by the snobby panel or the general public. Pretty cool.

PPS. Best resource for Canadians to buy Tequila that I have found is through ZYN in Calgary. They will ship anywhere in Canada and have outstanding selection all things considered.

I drank(chugged) a fifth of Cuervo Gold in college and spent the night sleeping in a dumpster. Thankfully my fraternity brothers came back and got me before I ended up on a garbage scow on the Delaware river. If its 100% blue agave, it's fine. If its Cuervo...run for the hills!

Cuervo has done so much damage to Tequila as almost everyone has a story like yours maybe sans the dumpster. Also horrible hangovers from Cuervo. Well made tequila actually agrees with me and I dont have any hangover.

Currently enjoying Dos Artes and Don Cayo, both extra anejos. 5/5 would recommend to a friend
