Tiger Palace Chips - Are they worth the price? (4 Viewers)

Empress Joliet.

I say this because it’s the only leaded chips of this nature, that I own in quantity, and still pop up on here and feebay every now and then. Still sharp units to be found, and I’m a relative newb still, by my assessment. So it’s possible to build these out.

Perhaps PCA but it’s too expensive. Empress Joliet’s are far cheaper and fit the bill.

Great suggestion, but start thinking of a relabel candidate for the $1.

at the chance of derailing this thread, what chips do you recommend a beginner start chasing if they wanted to go for leaded, textured (optionally shaped) inlays?
Fabulous Las Vegas….. (disregard my $500s and $1ks).

What frivolous luxury is worth it?
It seems a things worth somewhat parallels ones funds.

500K watch? Sounds dumb to most. But not to a guy who can afford 3…

4K on clay circle toys? Ridiculous to some, but have you seen some collections on here???

Don’t get me started on some of you with over 1500sqft homes, and cars with power steering. Excessive as fuck…..

Anything at all that you can get your hands on.
There are all kinds of beginners - some buy those gemacos that the chip room sold over the weekend, and some buy Tigers.
But if you’re looking to get out of it without breaking the bank, 1) good luck, 2) go for things other people don’t want, and 3) that probably means mixed sets.
I gave up on premium mint textured shaped inlay leaded THCs when windwalker starting buying all of them and driving the prices up 3x. Where did I go from there? First I started building a set chip by chip - the Foxwoods set. Nobody else had a set (rule #2) so there wasn’t a lot of competition for singles and small lots.
That’s one way to go.
You could even focus on a heads-up set (if you enjoy playing heads up - I recommend playing OFCP,) that way you can get away with maybe just a barrel or two of $5s (because $5s will always be the biggest challenge.) I’ve done that probably at least four times over the years - sometimes they grow into playable sets, sometimes they dont.
Then I noticed that house mold chips sold for a lot cheaper than THCs. So I went after a mixed set of leaded textured inlay house molds.
Another way you could go is compromise condition - you can get casino used leaded textured THCs for cheaper than tigers, because people don’t want them (rule #2.)

I don’t have any magic answers because I don’t think there are any. But unless you want to write somebody a check for $10k, I think you have to be patient and flexible and creative.

Should've specified if I were going for leaded, textured chips, I'd prefer if they came from an actual casino/poker room.

Personally, I feel like I can retire after I have one of each set:

House mold set
NAGB (thx tigers) set
Plastics set
Leaded, Textured, Shaped from a casino
Custom CPC set

and of course, the nuts of chipping:

TINA Card's mold

My wifey told me more then once....

It's insane how much you are willing to pay for clay discs...but before that you threw it away on much more stupid stuff.

When I sell something chip related, I mostley get my money back....would be sick if I could do that with my other money holes....
Still crying about 'all that money' I spend on chips....buying PCA's at dollar per chip, AST at 3 each or worse...mint Protege chips at 1.5 each....

Tigers did 2 things....

  1. Provided interested parties with unique chips in 100% transparency
  2. Had a very positive effect on market prices (mainly NAGB chips but also overall or did we forget the 25 or 30 dollar each Princess stuff)

What not to like ? (even if you did not buy any)

Ps. my cheapest set (Key West) were below a dollar (overall)...most expensive set is close to 1K per rack...I LOVE both sets dearly and neither will be sold anytime soon

I've already started my leaded, house mold set. Would love to have a leaded THC set however. I am not a condition snob, bike tires all the way!

I guess the hard part for me is... what do people NOT want? what is out there that has enough quantity that I can make a set out of? I suppose that is just the nature of the hobby, and I should enjoy the journey more than the destination yadda yadda. But for me, the point of collecting chips is to eventually felt them, that's what they were made for; so feels like a waste if I spend time and money on a chase to end up with a half baked unplayable set.

Look and you will find....

I built 2 RHC leaded sets for cheap when most were looking down on all RHC chips and THC became too expensive to buy more

Hunted for a long time to build & design three horseshoe mold chips (milled all of them) because prices of singles would force me to sell all my other chips to buy 1 small one

I bought insane BCC chips for cheap during the years these were flying below the radar...Protege, MGK Grand Cardroom & Capital Room

Many ways to skin a cat...that's the cool thing about chipping and kept me going all these years...look were most are not looking

Key word here is "needs". I'm not shitting on anyone that uses more. The PCF meme of "I needs allz the $5 chippies!" is just about as practical as this hobby itself.
I also find the excessive need for massive amounts of $5s pretty funny. Especially when combined with ”one rack of fracs is plenty, anymore will just clog up the table”, kinda talk. Just an fyi to all the hoarders: a 75 bet can (and should) be constructed using three green chips.

I’ll die on the same hill with you @JMC9389

Tell that to everyone casino that runs a 1-2 and 2-5 game lol

There is context for some purchases though. I misread the listing for my limit set, I read it as "There are two available limit sets, white and yellow".

So I thought it'd be fun to gambol and grab one of only 2 precreated limit sets that existed, or be left with money that I could just put into other stuff if I didn't get it.

Didn't expect it to be unlimited limit sets for everyone along with those same racks now sitting for purchase individually as well. Should've gotten off the Barrie Go Round one stop earlier.

That's actually kind of shitty.
Sellers absolutely have the right to conceal amounts, but when they do so, they're telling you loud and clear where they're coming from. I guess we've just tolerated it from the chip room for so long that its easy to forget that it's a little bit underhanded.

He said there was two limits sets, as in two different colors. Not necessarily only two. I was confused as well. But, nonetheless Barrie you locked down 9 racks of canary claws that Paulson no longer makes!

I'm curious. Do you think you were confused, or do you think you were deceived?
I have questions. Because we do tend to beatify our dealers around here. We got sales that were way more open and transparent than any prior NAGBs, and seemingly lower prices too. I was sold hook, line and sinker when I saw the prices on the first set. Hell I considered buying one. But the bottom line is that without the buyers having inventory numbers, the seller has significant advantages. And the whole silent bidding process for the sales - that was the least transparent thing I've ever seen, and yet I don't remember a single person questioning that. And that too is weird.

I put my most expensive leaded chips in play this past Friday and was asked if they were the same kind of chips as my old Dunes (China Clay's). I politely said they were different and quite a bit more expensive. Pretty much every game I get a "these are nice" comment no matter what is felted and that is the extent of it. My card molds will probably get the same reaction once they hit the table. The truth is there are very few chips "worth it" to anyone outside our little fcked up corner of the poker world. If people here enjoy them and many are willingly paying the initial pricing, isn't that where "worth" is determined?

As always, different strokes for different folks. Ultimately I think these are hot on the felt and bought a set myself, although I'm using the green fracs. No regerts.

This is EXACTLY how it goes with my crew. Occasionally, I let them decide which set to use. 99% of the time, they choose one of my plastic sets.

define excessive. >2? >3?> 4? >6?

I've disliked the Tigers from the moment they were introduced.

The designers had access to the inner sanctum with the entire Pauson palate at their disposal yet decided to limit to the flashiest 20% of the colors available. You know, the ones that look like Rainbow Bright got an upset tummy after eating too much ice cream and upchucked all over some clay discs.

Then decided to pick edge spots they knew this group would lose their minds over (bear-claws) and contend they are "no longer available from Paulson" as an incentive (also without corroborating information other than their word, creating a sense of FOMO).

Come up with a rather uninteresting inlay design, but who cares because "bright flashy Pauslon's available to all."

Make a multitude of variants available, Vegas and Cali cash, tournament and non-denom and build pre-packaged sets to sell.

Make a vendor forum and be "up front" about what's going on versus previous NAGB buys and sell these to the community, at $6 per chip.

Profit.

This set and buy as so much hype around it that it's the current hot thing that has everyone's attention. I hope it falls into the background like some of other previous NAGB, and suspect it will in coming months. IMO, it's nothing particularly special other than they are brand new Paulson's. Guess what, wait a few months and @TheChipRoom will have likely bought the chips from a closed casino, likely with new and unused secondaries, and they'll be available for a hell of a lot less money than the Tigers.

I wish you could teach me this mentality Baldy. Until then you can call me Sgt. Snobby!

Are Tiger Chips worth the price? No. In fact all of you Tiger Palace owners out there should sell me your Dealer buttons because I "only" have 3* and need 17 moAr!!!
