What are you listening to? (7 Viewers)

Have you not heard them before? If not, let me get you started. First - the name. Larkin Poe was their great-great-great-(maybe one more great) grandfather who was a first cousin of Edgar Allen Poe. Pretty cool!

This was one of the first songs of theirs that I ran across on YouTube about 3 years ago. Very touching song written about their grandparents who struggled with mental illness.

Rebecca (dark hair) and Megan formed Larkin Poe in 2010. Before that they played Bluegrass with their older sister Jessica and went by the Lovell Sisters. Rebecca was about 13-14 when that started. This is one of my favorite old videos from that time. At the beginning they state this song was just written 2 1/2 days earlier. Amazingly, the following year they recorded it on their final CD as Lovell sisters, and it sounds virtually indistinguishable from this version. If you like this style of music, the entire CD is really good. It's called "A Time to Grow."

OK, just one more, but a long one. A full concert from a bit over a year ago. As you can see I tend to prefer the live recordings. No hiding behind studio mixers and re-takes. Most of the songs are originals. The set list shows three covers. There is one they missed, Hard Time Killing Floor Blues is a Skip James cover. Their 2019 album "Venom & Faith" was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album. They was robbed! when the Grammy went to some hack named Gary Clark, Jr. (just kidding - Gary is awesome too) Hope y'all enjoy.

Mike Bloomfield - best blues guitarist that 99% of the world has never heard of. Every bit as good as Clapton, Guy, Page and all the rest.
Wow, another Bloomfield fan. I never thought I'd find another outside of some music forums I'm on. One of the most influential guitarists of all time in my eyes, a true legend.

Stop, from Super Session is my favorite track. Used to just jam this out for hours with some friends. Season of the Witch with Stills is another fantastic track.

Look for the Live Adventures album, great stuff. The cover art is by Normal Rockwell.

Oh yeah! I have everything of his that's available on Amazon Unlimited. I first ran across his compilation CD "Don't Say That I Ain't Your Man" over 20 years ago. I think his version of Howlin' Wolf's Killing Floor is probably my favorite track.

Did you watch any the Larkin Poe videos that I posted? These young ladies have a great respect for their forefathers in Blues. And they're pretty skilled musicians as well. The one that plays the slide lap steel has got some serious chops. The other one is a multi instrumentalist and has an incredible voice.

Another very talented young Blues artist is a kid (I think he just turned 21) from Mississippi who goes by Kingfish. Here's a clip if you haven't heard him yet. The future of blues is alive as long as young artists like this one, and the ladies from Larkin Poe keep coming along. Kingfish's debut album was also nominated for a Grammy in 2019 and is a fine recording beginning to end.

Kingfish is excellent, obviously very Hendrix influenced and very talented. I'd love to hear him play "Hey Baby" from Hendrix's First Rays album.

I'm kind of a music snob and have a tough time getting into anything post 1980. I have to admit that my musical interests are very narrow and almost exclusively lie before 1980, with some exceptions of course. Maybe 5-10% of anything I listen to is post 1980, like Phish, Alice in Chains, few others. Being a guitar player makes my appreciation for new-er/ish music very difficult, if the guitar doesn't grab me I just can't listen to it.

Larking Poe I have a tough time getting into. They're very talented but just not my cup of tea, although I can appreciate their talent.

No worries. Plenty of great music pre 1980 to listen to. I'm 63, so I like all the old stuff too, but I don't think I could live without the new stuff as well. I regularly take long dives into YouTube and look for new artists that play "real" music. I'm super picky about newer stuff, and rarely listen to anything on the radio. No matter the genre, most "popular" music being made today sucks, IMO. But there are lots of independent artists making good music these days. They don't get the pub, and they don't get rich cause they are unwilling to kiss the asses of the music industry execs, so I like to find them and support them by buying music and merchandise direct from their websites and at their live shows. Plus, as much as I like listening to recorded music, I absolutely LOVE live music best of all. And most of those pre 1980 bands don't tour much, if they are still together, or even alive.

The Kingfish Ingram track is excellent, thanks for the heads up I will be checking out this guy for sure. :cool

Honestly though when I saw Kingfish I immediately thought of these guys, yes I am an old fart.

@buffalojim So what do you think about newer artists performing old songs?

Also, Joe B has one of the most amazing guitar collections in the world. I'm sure that Tele he's playing is an original from the 1950s.

I kinda fine with it. If I said I wasn't I'd be a hypocrite because so many of the artists that I love have ripped off or covered other peoples music before them. Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Eric Clapton, The Who etc... I really haven't heard newer bands covering older songs because I literally just don't come across them. I stopped listening to the radio 10 years ago and I don't watch television anymore lol.

I can tell you, when I heard Metallica cover Turn the Page I wanted to vomit. I really hated that :p Guns and Roses covering Knocking On Heavens Door is a good one, also Live and Let Die. I'm trying to think of more recent ones but I just can't come up with any.

Because I'm a bit younger than you, I'll be 42 in exactly 6 days, I didn't have a chance to see many of the artists I listen to, not in their prime anyway. I never got to see the Dead in 89 when they came to Orchard Park, I was only 11. Didn't get the chance to go to Toronto in 94 to see Pink Floyd. Page and Plant came here in the mid 90's, couldn't go. I like to see some tribute bands on occasion. Musical Box is a great cover band, seen a few Floyd cover bands, Grateful Dead cover bands. Those are all pretty cool.

TLDR: Yeah, I'm kind of OK with it.

This is my buddy son, nothing like the names that are getting tossed around here but he can really play, worth a listen imo.
Thanks for sharing. He's good! I'd go listen to him live if he ever came to Houston. Looks like he's in the Seattle area?
