Why is baseball the best sport on the planet? Discuss. (4 Viewers)

Did you choose not to include one of the greatest athletes of all time that also had a stint as a baseball player? Just curious lol
Michael Jordan? His foray was a farce. Wasted many years he could have been winning basketball championships.

It's an example of baseball requiring alot of honed specialized skills, not athleticism. Years of training. It's not easy thing to hit a 90 mph ball flung in your direction.

Baseball as a sport is the same as a nerd sitting in front of his computer playing Call of Duty as an e-sport. Both require an insane level of hand eye co-ordination. Neither is a sport.

I loved watching the tour when I was a kid and LeMond and Armstrong were pissing off the world. But pedaling a bike for 200 miles a day through the mountains for a month is kind of dumb. In the same way marathons are dumb, except far worse. I take nothing away from endurance athletes- they do stuff nobody else can do. But it takes a special kind of crazy.

I heard an interview with a guy who supported the use of steroids and he used the Tour as an example. He said those guys lose a measurable and significant amount of bone density over the course of the Tour. Said using steroids would actually be much healthier for them. I don’t know if he was full of crap or not, but I was convinced. Of course the wiser path would probably be if they chose not to ride.
What about the tactics and strategy involved? There’s so much more to being successful in stage races than just riding up a mountain.

You can type but can you read @TheDuke? The definition even sites baseball as an example:

Not to derail thread but I think you're referring to blood doping (epo) not steroids. Can actually be done safely btw. Also the crazy thing about the tour is that it's not 1 day. It's 3 weeks!!
Yes I’m sure you’re right.
And I did say a month. I know they get a few days off. Maybe it’s closer to 3 weeks. But the point is, it’s freaking insane.

Why do you always have to regress to personal insults against people?

Very childish.
Because she’s so tolerant. She constantly waves flags trying to get people to think how great she is, but as soon as you have one iota of disagreement with her, she’ll put you on blast, block you and berate you.

Oh, but if you have the latest shiny new toy she can’t live without, she’ll forget about all that loving hatred she displayed toward you, and then she will kiss a$$ in a way it would make a two year old want to puke.

I can't help it that you say such stupid things!!
If you can't refrain from personal insults, maybe you should step back from online discussion forums.

Or if you want to be stuck in an echo chamber, maybe start your own forum where you can selectively ban and delete content that doesn't align with your own narrow views.

Sticky McShnickens! Although it’s not always the most exciting sport to watch, it requires tons of thinking and anticipation. I’ve seen some of the craziest plays in all of sports from baseball. One of my favorite memories was 4th of July 2012 at a Boise Hawks game. Hawks won and watched an awesome firework show with a beautiful woman. It doesn’t get much better than that.

I also forgot to mention, it’s the only sport I know of where you can fail at something 70% of the time and be a hall of famer.

Baseball is a game of chess that is a lot more in-depth than people realize. I truly respect it.

That said, I just cannot force myself to enjoy it, even when it's the only local professional sports team (the Astros) that is worth a damn. I've tried so many times, but maybe it's because I grew up playing hockey and just like fast-paced sports.

But I can selectively ban and delete content right here! I think I'll add another now. Thanks for the suggestion! Byeeeeeeeeeeee.

I will admit that years ago, I did enjoy watching baseball both live and on TV when starting pitchers actually pitched more than 5 innings.
Watching baseball on TV now sucks out loud!!!!!
It's way too long, too many practice pitches before innings start, and why does the catcher have to throw the ball to anyone but the pitcher after a strike out?
What really bothers me the most is when they change pitchers 10 times in a game and each pitcher comes in and throws 10 practice pitches??? What? Isn't that what the bull pen is for? MLB should change the rule so when one changes pitchers, the pitcher has to go to the plate and pitch to the batter without all the BS. That way, the manager will have to get pitchers ready in the bullpen, or leave starters in longer.
In NHL hockey, when they change goaltenders in a game, he doesn't get any warmup on the ice...he is put into the battle instantly.

Sorry to say, but I think Football/Soccer is likely the "best sport on the planet". Lowest barrier to entry, deceptively simple and holy crap do you need to be in great shape to do well.

I do have a deep affection for baseball for all the reasons already listed by everyone else.
I have seen Pedro at his peak pitch in Fenway, I have been to the clinching game of a World Series, I have walked into the cornstalks from off of THE field.
And best of all, I listened to baseball games over the radio, while driving across country with my dad.

I'll note that I do occasionally enjoy watching a game of baseball. I don't dislike the game.

Most recently, the WBC was wildly entertaining.

Ohtani vs Trout was absolutely an epic end.

The 2 best participants in the world at the game battling it out. Teammates. How it came down to the last out on a 3-2 count was a fairy tale ending.

But I wasn't watching a sport.

Baseball has definitely had the most History in the US and has been a rallying presence for the nation through times of wars and depression. The season starts in the spring and coincides with Summer which most people attribute to fun. For many generations, it’s a game that everyone played in their youth. You could play little league regardless of how athletic you were, and it didn’t require the equipment investment as other sports like hockey and football. The dynamics are unique in how the game can shift from individual match up, to teamwork and mental to physical. Ask many have mentioned, each position requires a different skill set, and there is a place for all different body types.

As a Major League Sport, I think the current product is terrible. Games are too long, Playoffs start too late at night, and the World Series Starts in October when the weather can be terrible. They come up with gimmicks like interleague play as a cash grab, and the ballpark experience in most markets is not something that an average family can afford.

Oh yeah, I REALLY respect the incredible physical condition of soccer players!! Oh my goodness, so much running.
I've just never been able to find it interesting, and I've tried.

Maybe it's just because I've been watching baseball every day in the summer since I was 5 or 6 years old, that I love it so much. The sound of the announcers calling the game on the radio or TV, it's just the soundtrack of life. Checking box scores in the morning, to see what I missed. The promise of a new season. Every at bat is like a 1:1 showdown embedded in a team sport. I can definitely see why some people think it's boring. I think it's near perfection.
